I have read many posts about how stupid gringos are for sending money to garotas in Rio and I wanted to present one experience from the other side of the fence. I first met a girl about 5 years ago in Rio during Carnival, beautifull, fantastic body and VERY intelligent. She was from another city and she would come to Rio twice a year to work, so she could have enough money to put herself thru college.
We ended spending my entire vacation together and I fell for her hard. She told me her lifestory and she confessed that she hated working, but that was the only way that she could get money so she could get ahead in life. Despite warnings from Bobby and a couple of other Rio vets, I decided to help her out by sending her money every month. I traveled to her city a number of times and met her family (poor but very nice.) The few hundred bucks I sent every month went real far, every month she would get money from Western Union to pay for her college, bills and to have a little something extra to spend on herself.
We were together for 2 years, the relationship didn't end up working out, but she never returned to Help. She ended up graduating from the university with a degree and she now lives in California working for a large computer company. We are still good friends and we talk all the time.
I just wanted to write about my experience to show that not every request for money is a scam. Not every girl is lying when they say they want to get out of "The Life". I consider my friend a success story and I am proud that I had something to do with the fact that she moved from being a prostitute to having a great life and respectable job in America. Maybe I built up a little positive Karma for myself:-)

Good for you, and for her.
My calculation tells me that you personal judgment must be correct about 98% of the time.

I have to agree. I helped one chica out that I felt was deserving of my assistance. She didn't, IMHO, belong as a hooker in TJ.
The amount she needed monthly wasn't a hardship for me at that time, and we had some wonderful vacations together. Perhaps the best vacation I have ever had was with this chica.
I will never forget how two hours after she greeted me at the PVR airport I was just so totally relaxed and everything in the world seemed to be exactly where it belonged. (And no, we were NOT in bed. We at a little cliffside seafood place watching the sun go down while she fed me shrimp.)
She finished school and opened her own shop. We seperated before that happened, mainly because (as we both knew all along) there wasn't a lot of commonality between the two of us. We stayed friends by email for a while, and then drifted apart. Lately I am sorry I let that happen....

I am really glad to hear some people posting happier stories... I have only loaned money once to a chica in BA, and I got it back my last trip... She even wanted to pay me a little extra.
For me, the point of giving something to someone is to GIVE it to them, which means I don't expect anything in return or hold them to any kind of stipulations...

I have often loaned money to chicas. Only once have I gotten burned. (And some of those loans were several thousand dollars.)
But I ALWAYS look at it: I don't loan the money if I really need it back.

I have given money to only one girl. She used it to take english lessons and the other time to buy a computer to help her in school. Each time was only $150. Her english is much better and she does have the computer.
So it has helped her, but I also do not plan on sending anymore.

I sent money to a TJ chica once. Deposited it in her account after she gave me the number. It turned out that she wanted to get paid for some all-nighters that I had assumed were freebies since no money was mentioned, and I wound up quite short of disposable cash at the end of one of my TJ trips! Oops!!!

"she now lives in California working for a large computer company."
Mac or PC???
Congrats to you for your success. You deserve lots of kudos for your good deed.
I think Tanya la Famosa (Tijuana) deserves credit on this thread. She's rumored to have paid for hombres to get home after being robbed, and to have visited sick hombres in the hospital. This isn't a story of someone who helped a girl out of the business. This is a story of a prostitute with a heart of gold.

Oh, Please!!!!
I also hear she donates blood each week and gives half the money she make to a local orphanage and sends the other half home to her sick mother.

Seņior Ben:
I think we should also include Tania de Chihuahua (La Tropa) here. Giving money to this beautiful chica Doesn't Always End in Disaster.
I would think you would have many, many, many (heartwarming) stories to compete with the ones on this thread. How many Chevy No vas have you donated to the local talent?
So, Hombres, what is the secret to extracting a chica/garota from the business without it ending in disaster?
Do you need to
(a) get them early in their "careers"?
(b) get ones that have relatively good relations with family?
(c) get ones that are relatively well educated?
(d) extract them from their home countries?
(e) NOT extract them from their home countries?
just
Curious
The people need to know

I think grabbing then early in their career is crucial, once they have worked the scene for a year or two its almost impossible to get "the programma" out of their life. Also a girl who is educated has one huge advantage over the other girls, its called options. If she has an education, she has the ability to do other things to make money. Unfortunately some of these girls have no other options in life, they either have to sell their bodies or marry a rich tourist.
I am not one of these guys on the board who have the "They are all whores" mentality, I have met a number of girls in Rio who I felt very bad for. I have met girls who had two or more children and then their husband left them and have not given them one centavo for the child's care. (No child support in Rio) I have met other girls who were the sole source of income for their entire family (Mother, siblings, neices and nephews) Its so sad to know some of these really sweet girls who have to do this for a living, especially when you know that most guys would give their left arm to have a woman like them in the US.
Now don't get me wrong, their are an equal number of scammers in Rio too, who wouldn't blink an eye at the thought of ripping off a gringo. But being in Rio so often has allowed me to meet women who I wish didn't have to do the programma for a living.

Ben: Tanya did visit a sick guy in hospital who overdosed on Viagra.

Yeah I know.

I agree with you. Many of these girls love the life but many more have to figure out a way to support a family in a culture that men truly rule. Forget a glass ceiling its more like steel and concrete. There is no job security, you can be fired for missing one day, or passed over because a man applied.
The educated ones have more opportunities but still face difficulities.
I too do not believe they are all whores but I also keep my eyes open so I don't get played by a true pro.
By Milkman on Sunday, June 22, 2003 - 10:09 pm: Edit |
By the correct definition they are all whores.
Not all whores are bad. Some do have hearts and work the angle to support thier families to give them a better life.
All must lie in their line of work. There is nothing wrong with the little "white" lies but when they take advantage of poor wimpy mongers that is wrong.
Most are guys that never had a girlfriend and have not been around women to see both sides of them and want to believe they really care for them. Again once you get involved with more than a session you may be asking for trouble.
I do not doubt there are less than half a single digit succuss rates with former whores and mongers so its not impossible but money is normally the factor in those.
There is a tuff guy saying on the streets I would like to share with my white friends.
Once the money goes So do the hoes
There are plenty of real women in this world that would love to be with an american even a wimpy monger
You just need to find them oh and don't look in the whore bars.
The working girls are fun to play with and look at but at the end of the night you wanna be with a girl thats just right
Good Luck guys Live life to the fullest and keep your heart out of fantasylandia

What Milkman said:
"...but when they take advantage of poor wimpy mongers that is wrong. "
What Milkman meant:
"...but when they take advantage of poor wimpy mongers that is called evolution/survival of the fittest. "

Milky, you should start a thread titled "Sending Money to Hombres dressed like Spider-Man Doesn't Always End in Disaster"
