Best Place to buy Pimsleur Tapes?

ClubHombre.com: -Off-Topic-: -Foreign Languages: Learning Spanish: Best Place to buy Pimsleur Tapes?

Based on all the good things I've heard about them I'ved decided to buy a set of the intermediate level Pimsleur tapes.

I never thought I would because they're so expensive, but I need something new to goad my study so I'm going for it.

The cheapest I've found them is on the Amazon site for $206.00 and free shipping. I wanted to check with the board to see if anyone knew of any better buys before I take the plunge.

Bookie,

Try eBay. From time to time they have books, tapes, cds that are at a fraction of the retail price.

Also, try your local libraries first. They may have tapes. I've listened to the tapes from my local library but I don't think it's worth the money.

Bookie,

I have both the Pimsleur Spanish I and II series on CD and I'm on the verge of buying III. I've purchased them all from Amazon. I plan on keeping mine but it looks like there is a market to re-sell them "used" through Amazon when your finished w/o much of a loss. I'm very happy with Pimsleur and Amazon but I'm always open to new possibilities...so if you find something better I would appreciate hearing about it. Thanks

I have all three series, what kind of info do you need? E-mail me.

By cf_ on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 08:32 am:  Edit

I have some of the Pimsleur series on MP3 files. I can't really comment on them too much as I haven't been able to stay awake thru to the end of a lesson.

By Redongdo on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 08:44 am:  Edit

CF,

Exactly! I've gone through all three sections and fallen asleep before finishing even one of the 90 or so lessons. I was hoping I'd get it through osmosis but mi espanol still sucks.

I'm convinced though that my Spanish get's better when I'm drunk!

By Billfromreading on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 08:51 am:  Edit

Bookie, I have all three complete on MP3.

Drop me a line if this would be of help.

I've been using audio cd learning tools off and on for about a year now, I can say they are about the best I've stumbled across.

By cf_ on Monday, March 18, 2002 - 10:36 am:  Edit

Red, your spanish IS better when you're drunk. My girlfriend is making her first steps at learning english. When she sounds out each letter it sounds horrible. But when she speaks a word or phrase quickly it's much better. I think a big part of learning a language is just speaking it as much as possible. Of course you're going to fuck it up a lot and give lots of good laughs to native speakers but that's part of the fun.

..."Of course you're going to fuck it up a lot and give lots of good laughs to native speakers but that's part of the fun.".....

Hell, that's my strategy, cute and cuddlely gringo mangling spanish.......

works every time.

Except with the policia, no sense of cuddlely there.

Use mysimon.com to search for the best prices. Alldirect.com looks like it is $40 cheaper than Amazon. The worst price is Barnes & Noble. You can also pick up a used set for $100-$150 on ebay.

As a matter of fact, I have the casettes for the Travellers Edition as well as II and III. The Travellers edition and II are for sale as I have outgrown them. They were a good source during the first two years of learning a little Spanish. If somebody is interested in buying them, send me an e-mail. The Traveller's edition cost less than $50 and the II set was about $200. The Traveller's set is close to new and the II set has been used a few dozen times, but is in decent shape.

I find even III not to be much help to me at this time as they seldom use the subjunctive or imperfect and the conversations are a little too contrived given where I am at. If someone has some suggestions for some more advanced material I would be interested.

With regard to the comments above about staying awake through them. I used to use them while driving. It's about a 2 hour drive down from LA, just in case someone lived in a city next to Manhantan Beach.

If you would like to sell a used set of Pimsleur Spanish Plus (just 10 new lessons that follow Pimsleur Level 3), please contact me - erip@earthlink.net or PM on this site.

Anybody have a scoop on whether Pimsleur will eventually expand to a full size Level 4 and perhaps beyond?

Check out your local library! Took the Pimsleur Spanish I and II courses on tape for two weeks (free), went to Sams Club and bought two packs of 24 cassette tapes ($22 total) and started learning spanish (priceless).

By Erip on Thursday, September 11, 2003 - 05:57 pm:  Edit

Viper I did check that out. Libraries around here only carry the shorter courses offered by Pimsleur.

At any rate, I've read reviews of the advanced Pimsleur program and it doesn't sound like something I want. All the reviews stated that this product was clearly developed for in-house training for English speakers working in Spanish publishing. They used the Pimsleur method and the thing got put on the market for the rest of us. But, it is not a natural continuation of I - III - only a specialized course for the publishing biz.

So the question becomes, what's next after Pimsleur III?

We need "Porker's Advanced Spanish for Putaņeros".

Try:

www.usedtapes.com

Here are the first two ads on the language tape section and they are both dated today:

HI, I have Pimsleur Comprehensive Spanish I, II, III & IV (Spanish Plus) for sale in Mp3 format. Literature also included. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions. Thank you! I also have other languages for sale. Email me for more info.

I have Pimsleur Comprehensive Spanish 1, 2, 3 & Spanish Plus for sale in Mp3 format. Literature also included. E-mail me with questions. I am looking forward to serving you. Also for those of you interested in the Mandarin, French, Vietnamese, Japanese language, I also have those for sale Levels 1,2, and 3 for Mandarin French and Japanese. Vietnamese only has one level.

I purchased my Pimsleur Brazilian Portuguese CDs after placing a free ad on the site which was immediately responded to by a number of people. Mine came in the mp3 format which is easily readable on a computer. I saved them to the hard drive and access them that way with the originals kept as an emergency set. If you wanted to create a CD that was playable on your car unit or head set you could easily do so with your music player software.

tight fit,

I'm interested in your pimsleur library. dt5580511'at'"yahoo"dot"com thanks

By Tight_fit on Saturday, September 13, 2003 - 07:08 pm:  Edit

It's not my library. Sorry if I wasn't clear in the post. I just copied the first two ads that appeared on the "for sale" page at usedtapes.com to give an example of how easy it is to find what you need. Some of these people have more language lessons available than you might hear at the UN. They also offer other companies besides Pimsleur. I see many from a company called Rosetta Stone.

Hey Erip, just read your post, and may be able to provide a little more info. I live in Cleveland witch has a main city library in the downtown area. Thats the library that has comprehensive material on just about everything. Their foreign lit. department is extensive. The suburban/county libraries are limited in foreign language tapes. I'm 50% into Pimsleurs Spanish I and feel very comfortable in getting my point across to the ticas. Only wish I had more time before my trip next week. A question for Tight_fit. I'm not familiar with Pimsleurs Spanish IV. Could you tell us more about it?

By Brazil_Specialist on Tuesday, October 07, 2003 - 03:02 am:  Edit

I have all the pimsleur in mp3 format on 3 CD.

Of course, to promote the production of good language tapes, you should buy them :-)

By El_apodo on Sunday, November 02, 2003 - 05:40 pm:  Edit

Thanks to Tight Fit for the heads up on usedtapes.com. I recently was able to acquire Spanish I, II, and III and Portuguese I, II, and III for $20 a piece in MP3 format. Quick, easy and cheap.

Now I don't want to post anything that would get Hombre in trouble and of course, I'd recommend you getting the full set at full price so that the producers can continue to make money based on copyright law. But for those of us who are poor, this is a good thing.
