Since I’ve been labeled a racist (yes, Amous, you got under my skin), I figured maybe I ought to pipe in here. I am not a racist, nor ever have been, as to ME, racism is David Duke type stuff. Experience and general observation taught me when I was very small that there is no genetic superiority of one race over another – anyone is pretty much just as capable as anyone else. Being raised in Orange County, CA, however, I did become something of a redneck. Of course I also worshiped Ronald Reagan and went to Wally George (a local So Cal phenomenon, I believe) tapings and chanted his name. Our preferred names for Mexicans at school were ‘wabs’ as wetback was too long and we might get our asses kicked for using it. We never really used the name beaner for some reason (BTW, the new Molotov video is hilarious). Our idiotic nicknames for Vietnamese (which were about 1/3 of MY classes) were ‘nips’, oblivious that this was a slur for Japanese. I never, ever, used the word nigger, as even for rednecks, this is taboo unless you’re sure you’re talking to another one, but damned if it wasn’t on the tip of my tongue several times. Basically, I grew up a judgemental fool. I refused to take Spanish in school because it was a ‘poor man’s language’.

And then I went 3,000 miles away to the East Coast University. Where pretty much I was at the very least ‘exposed’ to the error of all my ways. And then graduate school where my old political views were turned about 359 degrees. I was encouraged to actually think for myself before forming opinions, rather than being just like the moron next door who blindly believes what people tell them. I still, however, never came close to being politically correct, and STILL find racial and ethnic and sexist stereotypes to be rather funny. I laughed when I was 14 and saw a cartoon in Hustler with the Harlem Globetrotters team bus, with big afro’ed guys with toothy grins hanging out the window dangling basketballs, carrying a trailer full of watermelons. I still think that’s quite funny today. Some of Westfargo’s rants made me nearly pee my pants laughing. Others sickened me. Some did both. Have my redneck tendencies gone away? Not all of them, obviously.

Someone on this board has accused me of hating Mexico and Mexicans, and that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of in my life. Even when I was calling them wetbacks I never hated them, never hated anyone, though obviously I was using words of hate and ignorance. Anyone who knows me knows that ˝ my adopted family is Mexican-American. I can’t imagine what my Dad used to think when I told him Spanish was a ‘poor man’s language’, but he used to just shake his head and say I’ll learn some day.

I learned about MEXICO by going to Tijuana, mostly the Zona. And what I learned about the country wasn’t really Mexico, but rather border hustle. But I loved going there. It was soooo different than what I knew in the US. It was wild. And a little dangerous. And fun. The Mexican women I got to know were prostitutes – the bottom of the barrel in Mexican society. I instantly loved them. The Mexican men, parasites preying on tourists in the bars as pimps and drug dealers and ficha delivering leeches, as well as the drunken customers. They became part of the ‘experience’, and the entertaining ones became friends, but most were viewed as enemies. They existed to rip me off and many barely hid their contempt for me coming to their country to screw their women.

I learned MORE about Mexico, however, by going to live and work in the NE of the country. I still go straight for the sublime most of my free time and head for the houses of ill repute (that’s what I am…), but real life has me strongly entrenched in the Mexican middle class, which I can assure all of you DOES exist and is very strong, at least here in the NE. My colleagues are all devoted family people who value hard work and education. They teach me (or try to… soy burro!) about REAL Mexican culture every day. So do the poor and uneducated people that make up the vast majority of this country that I deal with before and after work. Of course I’ll never fully understand until I can speak the language about 200 % better than I do right now. And even then, I doubt I’ll ever fully understand.

I guess I am now officially an ex-pat, and I hear that ex-pats tend to bitch and complain and rage against their adopted culture. Some of my North American colleagues do nothing but. But I really love it here. Almost everything about it. It’s still new to me, and still exciting. Am I now an ‘enlightened’ human being? No, I spend too much time boozing and chasing hookers to ever become one. Am I the same idiot I was when I was 17? Sometimes.

And if you wanna call me a racist, that’s fine with me too. Maybe I am one.

Another example of a redneck getting an education: I don’t think I ever consciously met a Jewish person until I was 17 and went to summer school on the East Coast. I certainly was no Farrakhan, but I had heard all the jokes about Jews that everyone hears growing up, and if there was one thing I identified with Jews, it was that they were cheap. That’s all I fucking knew.

Enter Porker the idiot into a summer program FULL of upper class kids from the East Coast, and guess what I was exposed to for the first time? The first time I saw someone walking around with a yarmulke on their head, my immediate reaction was “What a fucking GEEK!”. I think it took me all of a day and a half to realize what brass fucking BALLS it took to wear something like that on your head when not only do morons think gee, what a GEEK, but a shitload of your ancestors got burned in ovens in your parents lifetime because of the beliefs that led them to wear those funny little hats. The next year my best friend turned out to be Jewish, and he taught me even further what it was like to be different and the fear that people of his faith had. I lived with a first generation Russian Jew for four years whose grandparents died in concentration camps. Yet another whose identity as a Jew was an integral part of her being and who impressed upon me an immense respect for something I never had any idea even existed when I was listening to idiotic jokes as a kid. I can probably tell a similar story as to how eventually many of my prejudices got exposed and rejected. I think many of us can. You grow up. You learn. I’m STILL learning.

Since this section is supposed to deal with immigration, here's a question I'd like to see debated: Should green card holders (permanent resident aliens) be required to pass test(s) on their knowledge of such things as the U.S. Constitution and government?

I'm not real clear on the so-called "green card," except that it is no longer green. Nor do I know for certain that if someone has a "green" card, that they are automatically "permanent resident aliens." I have, however, roomed with a couple of guys, who were "permanent resident aliens." So, I am at least certain that immigration status exists.

While my roomies were generally likeable, it seems wrong, that they could be allowed to live here, basically the rest of their lives, without knowing the basic principles by which this country operates. The sort that are taught in courses that are required from about 7th grade, thru 12th. It seems both they and the country are short-changed.

I realize, people debate endlessly, what shoud go into those courses. And, that such knowledge does not guarantee agreeing to those principles.

After someone has been here awhile, say, three years, they sould be required to pass a test, with more tests periodically. Continual failures should be deported.What are others thoughts, as to the +/- of this?

Can someone explain to me why they are killing all the librarians?

Last weekend I went to one of my favourite spots the upscale Santa Monica beach and GOOD LORD! I thought I was in Mexico.

3-5 ago there were lots of beach bunnies tanning and chilling and playing volleyball, roller blading etc. This year it looks like a mexican refuge camp. I've never seen a beach crowd so 3rd world ugly and I've been to many beaches. Hundreds of broke ass illegal looking mexicans have driven the Americans away.

Those of you crying for political correctness can suck my dick. 20 years ago S. Calif is one of the nicest places in USA. Wait till the mexicans become the Majority in Los Angeles(which will happen) and start voting in their mayors and Governors.

The system is fucked. It is corrupt. Don't get me started. INS is shit.

We could hardly blame the Mexicans for wanting to come here. And I don't hate them personally. I have hired them before. I have dated US borned Mexican girls. But the large number of illegal immigrants is a problem, whether they are from Mexico or Mainland China.

Actually, Mexico lost their land fair and square...the land is no longer rightfully theirs. I will tell you that the Catholic breeding so prevalent in Latin American and the Philippines changes once they move to the states. Most Mexicans and Filipinos figure out that they cannot afford to have huge families in the states so they have fewer children. After a generation or two, eveyr immigrant family becomes totally immersed in American culture and they adapt to American society but with a twist. The problem with white Americans is that they don't have many children, if any at all...which creates a huge downward spiral in their population pool. Remember folks, white Americans are not the only card carrying racists, minorities are just as racist, if not, much more so. I wish they would just quit brainwashing their daughters into marrying only men of their own race. It is a definate phenomenon that immigrant parents become irate when their daughter decide to date or marry outside of their race. I envision a future where we all can interbreed and the children will be more beautiful and enlightened.

I envision a future where humanity finally meets the catostraphic end it so richly deserves. I hope it happens while I am young enough to enjoy the fall, yet old enough that I'm done getting my kicks.

I have grown so accustomed to the brown skin people of the world I often think of myself as being like them. When I see myself in the mirror I almost look sickly. Thank God all my off spring are mixed with that beautiful brown tone. We are all just people looking for the best things in life.

Dont forget that the Mexican governemnt actually brokered a deal with the US for the purchase of their territory. I think it was 22 million dollars. OK so we had just kiched their ass and had a gun at their head. But we still paid more for it than we paid France for the Lousiana Purchase and more than we paid Russia for Alaska.

As much as I love Mexico and Mexicans( I am living in Mexico by choice) I am damn glad that all of that territory now belongs to the US. Otherwise it would be in the same condition as Mexico. Not good. It is not racism to simply state that the US system has better used the resources and provides a better standard of living than the Mexican system has. Suppose that This territory still belonged to Mexico. We would still have an immigation problem. There would still be millions looking to move to the US for economic reasons. But the state most effected would be Nebraska or something like that.

In the long run everybody was probably better off with the US administrating California rather than Mexico. Not the least the Indians. If you think the pale faces treated the indians bad in the US. You should see how they have been treated in Mexico. If they were not hunted down and exterminated like the yaquis, they were trapped in a very racist system that keeps them at the very bottom of society and in abject poverty. Almost slave labor conditions. At least here they can have casinos, sell cigarettes, and in the case of some tribes make beau coup dollars off of oil. None of that in Mexico.

Back in the early 80's there was a rather significant movement in the norhtern states of Mexico to secede and petition the US for statehood. It did not get much press here but it scared the bejesus out of politicians in Mexico City. A Mexico that already lost half of its territory under duress, was under threat of halving it halfed again bu tthis time by the choice of its own populace.

I feel sorry for Mexico, but not because we took their territory.

DJ, I usually am happy to be with those who want to do something serious about the illegal immigration problem. And after reading various message boards about living in places like the PI, Brazil, Costa Rica, etc I know there isn't a one of them that would allow any of us to take up permanent residence there just because we felt like it. And talking about California being "owed" to the Mexicans is a joke. The Spanish "owned" the place before Mexico was a concept and the poor Indians before them.

But blaming the Mexican illegals (and what about those from Asia?) for all the urban decay you have in Southern California is out of whack. Your beautiful Santa Monica beaches were trashed long ago by the MTV scum of this society. And LA in general was a cesspole way back in the 60s before Taco Bell even existed.

It isn't the illegal Mexicans who write all the gang graffiti and spend their days doing drugs and waiting for the next food stamp distribution. They aren't the ones who created a fast food mentality that is now directed at every action or thought. And they certainly aren't the ones who tear apart the infrastructure so that many areas look like bombed out target zones. There are plenty of places in this country where there isn't a single Mexican, legal or illegal, and everything looks like Post Terminator decoration.

As much as I want to control the indescriminate access to this country and end the cultural undermining that is taking place I don't want some sort of racial and/or cultural jihad directed against people who come here to escape the abject poverty of their own countries. Besides, you and I both know that most of the work that these people do is stuff that no native born American is going to be caught dead doing. These people don't show up expecting an automatic and immediate free handout. It's the people who control the political system who are promoting a welfare mentality for their own gains that leech onto these immigrants. Get rid of them and show some empathy towards the Mexican family on the beach who are probably just as upset about the decay as you are.

Besides, who would you rather sit next to anyway? A bunch of friendly people enjoying themselves with all generations included or a bunch of wannabe head bangers and their pasty faced fat assed parents. The first group might invite you over for home made tortillas and carne asada. The second group is eating pork rinds with cheeze wheez.

You know what gives me the biggest kick of all. Mexicans spewing venom about all the Asians that "are taking over". As I have mentioned I work in an office with about 8 Lao girls. There are more Lao and Vietnamese in the shop outside the office. There is one Chicano guy in the office with me as well and even though he speaks English better than me he spends half the day going out of his way to speak Spanish and the other half of the day crying like a bitch because the chinos are jabbering there crap, or he cant stand Thai music (but no one complains about the crap he plays), Then he bitches that there food stinks ect ect ect. I love it. I get such a kick out of seeing Mexican guy cry to the other Mexican guys about the Laotians. Once the girls even politely ask me if there music or loud gossiping in Lao bothered me at all after the Mexican guy complained to upper management that he couldn't concentrate because of all the Lao "jabbering" I told the girls have at it, enjoy your conversation, crank up the Thai music. Mexican guy is suffering. I really get a kick out of it. White Americans are in general the most tolerant people on the planet. No way would Mexicans in Mexico tolerate much of what is perfectly normal in San Diego. I am sick and tired of hearing racism used as an excuse for every lazy bum that doesn't make it big because he is sitting on his ass crying that society is mistreating him.

OK, to answer your first three questions, I was born in Mexico, I have never lived in the USA, my parents are Mexicans and while growing up we only speaked in Spanish in MEXICO.

All though I can easy live in the USA, I choose to live, work, and raise my family here in Mexico, where I belong.

Yes, you are right, most americans need a better education in manners, taste, and they have to stop being so damn self-rightess and their ego is way out into outerspace.

When I was expressing the "fitting in" issue, I was not implying that I am doing everything in my powers to fit in. I dont need to, because I dont have to. But, if I decided to imigrate and live and work in the USA, the logical think to do is to fit in that society in order to be respected.

Just the same if a Gringo wants to retire to Mexico or Brazil, he has to make an effort to fit in an live in harmony with society. Its all about respect.

I had a long term monagamous relationship with a U.S. borned Mexican girl who's parents were illegal immigrants. I was proud to be with her and I almost married her.
