Ahn.... finally someone who understands the value of a good knife in an alleyway "encounter"! I'm so sick of all the diots who want to take guns to Rio to "protect themselves"... leaving aside how the hell are you going to get a personal gun into Rio, by the time you've pulled your gun out, the other guy has already knifed you. Anyway, word to the wise, no cutoms officer in the world has ever gotten upset when they see my knife in my (checked-in) luggage....

Hi Treeshark long time no see :-(
Have you guys ever needed the use of a weapon before ?
I have been attacked once and if I pulled a knife out to protect myself I would have landed myself in Jail. The laws must differ in Rio and Columbia.

Keep safe guys and the best way to avoid trouble is just run away.

Hey Lechero!

Answer, yes I've used a knife to "extricate" myself from shit before. BUT - it's only useful in the right situation (close quarters, other guy doesn't have a gun pointed at you). For 90% of the time, you are absolutely right - run. And for the other 4% or so, just hand over the fucking money, it's not worth your life. Actually, the very best is to make sure you don't get into trouble in the first place.

Still, it's good to know that you're not totally defenseless (on the other hand, you are an IDIOT if you are carrying around a gun...).

Well, I think we've all debated this one before. Common sense and Situational Awareness are still the best weapons.

Hola Milkie
trying to get started on a report of my last and final trip to Cartagena.
And yes I have needed a weapon before but not in Colombia so far.
I agree with what Badseed has said 110%
However a good knife is more then just a weapon ,it is also a very useful tool. Ever been in a restaurant trying to eat a steak with a restaurant knife that would not cut hot butter??? I have used my own knife more then once. Problems getting that plastic wrap off something you just bought???
When I exchange money in Colombia I usually do like $500 at a time. "Still, it's good to know that you're not totally defenseless" Usually you have to worry about snatch and run guys. Give me 5 seconds and I have a weapon, which gives me some time to run like hell.
