OK. Us gringos need your help. We need to start learning the language and I can't think of a better way to start than here in this forum. With the love of our hombres, let's take this first step in becumming literate in the language of mongering. How about posting a list of questions and then fellow mongerers translate so we can get started on a new dimension in mongering.

Put another way, we don't know what we're doing, if we're getting screwed or fucked and we need you help to understand some basics. Let's start with this list and see how we can "make it grow" with the help of our other brother gringos. This is a good start but please add to the list.

Go to www.freetranslation.com there you can get free translations to spansh. To reuse it all you have to do is close that page and reopen it to translate another series of phrases. Hope that helps all you non speaking spanish folks.

What is the Spanish word that gets translated into English as "wave" with electronic translators? And what does the Spanish word mean? Thanks.

You probably mean the word "onda". It literally means a wave in the sense of a radio wave or a wave in the hair. But it's used in a lot of expressions that just don't translate literally. You may have heard it used in the expression "qué honda?" which is a welcoming greeting for "what's new?".

In my Yankee thinking all I can come up with is that when a lady changed her hair style, you could say "qué honda" and that generalized into "what's new". But that's really stretching it so that I can have the comfort of getting an explicable translation. Maybe a native speaker can set us straight.

My shot at translating "onda" would be 'vibe'.

We have a good "onda".

Here are some other definitions I've gotten out of the Oxford Spanish Dictionary:

estar en la onda - to be trendy, to be hip, to be with it
