Butchering of 80's Music

I guess I could let Hilary Duff's remake of "Our Lips are Sealed' slide. I originally hated her version, but it later became at least tolerable.

But Britney Spears' butchering of Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative" is simply inexcusable. That song is HORRIBLE! I am no big Britney Spears basher either. I like a lot of her music, but there is nothing positive to say about “My Prerogative.”

I guess Bobby Brown could use the money from the licensing rights since he is too concerned with beating up Whitney Houston these days.

Two groups that I am starting to take a closer look at are Franz Ferdinand and The Killers. Supposedly The Killers have a big Synth Pop (think New Order, Duran Duran, etc) influence, but I haven't gotten that so far from what I've heard.

Somebody Told Me is simply addictive, as is Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand.

The Killers are from Vegas, Franz Ferdinand from Glasgow.

The only link I can really think of between the Killers and New Order, is that in one of their video's (from the 2000 comeback time) they played a band with the name "The Killers" on the drum set. It is sort of like all the persona's in the Stardust "Music Sounds Better With You" video.

But this post really does a lot to increase your Patrick Bateman persona. That is one of my favourite films (American Psycho). The book sucks sh*t, homo crap, but the movie is an all time classic...

"Don't Just stare at her a*s...Eat it!"

"Patrick, seriously. I'll do whatever you want," she says. "If you don't want to go to dinner, we won't. I mean-"
"It's okay," I stress. Something snaps. "You shouldn't fawn over him . . ." I pause before correcting myself. "I mean . . . me. Okay?"
"I just want to know what you want to do," she says.
"To live happily ever after, right?" I say sarcastically. "That's what I want." I stare at her hard, for maybe half a minute, before turning away. This quiets her.

Later, predictably, she's tied to the floor, naked, on her back, both feet, both hands, tied to makeshift posts that are connected to boards which are weighted down with metal. The hands are shot full of nails and her legs are spread as wide as possible. A pillow props her ass up and cheese, Brie, has been smeared across her open cunt, some of it even pushed up into her vaginal cavity. She's barely gained consciousness and when she sees me, standing over her, naked, I can imagine that my virtual absence of humanity fills her with mind-bending horror.

----------------

Personally, I think the book pushes the envelope in ways the movie could not.

Patrick Bateman persona eh?

Speaking of music….I just spent some time on the German charts and started downloading some random music off the German Top Single 100. There seems to be a newsgroup where they post a lot of the hits off the German charts.

alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.german.charts

I also found another good site that links to worldwide music charts.

http://www.lanet.lv/misc/charts/

On that page I found the following site which I used to find song names to download:

http://musikmarkt.lw-t1.thuecom-medien.de/content/charts/history.php3

I tried to avoid stuff in English and went straight for stuff I didn't recognize.

The first thing that caught my eye was Rammstein. Two of my favorite songs are still "Speil Mit Mir" and "Eifersucht." I even made an mp3 ring tone for my phone off the intro to Eifersucht. "Amerika" is the current number 2 in Germany. Didn't care for it too much, but I guess I can get use to it. It just wasn't as catchy as Eifersucht or even Du Hast.

A remake of Matthew Wilder's 1983 hit, “Break My Stride” was the current number 3 song by some group called Blue Lagoon. Never heard of them, but it was a decent remake with a catchy beat.

The next song I loved! Freaking awesome song and I can’t get it out of my head. It was called “Dragostea Din Tei” and had a very catchy beat. The thing I didn't understand was that it was on the chart twice. Once under O-zone and another time under Haiducii, but the songs sounded pretty close to one another. I also didn't recognize the language and did some research. From what I can gather it is a Romanian song. Is this correct?

The Spanish language song Veo Veo by Hot Banditoz was overly simple and kind of corny, but still catchy and mostly enjoyable.

Spiel Mit by 2raumwohnung starts very slowly, but gets going a little later and is a cool song.

I tried a few of the Rap/Hip-Hop songs like Fuffies im Club, Zurück, and In Da City, but nothing really struck me.

Some other interesting finds were remakes of 1985's "Walking on Sunshine" by "Katrina and the Waves." The remake by "The Preluders" did a decent job of sticking to the original and not changing too much. Another interesting remake find was Big Brother Allstars' "Wie 'ne Family" which seemed to be a German language remake of the 1979 Sister Sledge song "We Are Family."

Speaking of remakes, several months ago I was bumming around the English BBC charts. One of the songs listed was by Novaspace and was called Beds are Burning, which was a remake of the classic 1987 song by Midnight Oil. That chick in Novaspace is hot! I tried to read more about her, but the webpage at http://www.novaspacefan.de/ is only in German despite both British and French flags signifying the site is available in those languages are well. I downloaded the video which was ripped from M2 Pop (http://www.mtvpop.de)

I actually liked this remake very much. Anything that has a catchy hook with a techno/speed background track I am very susceptible to getting addicted to. I do think the remake totally butchers the spirit of the original song. Its underlying message and meaning about the plight of the aborigines of Australia seems to get lost. But I can get over that because that chick is hot and the remake is catchy.

The number 9 song "Lebt denn dr alte Holzmichl noch...?" made me want to slap on some lederhosen, head down to the local watering hole and slap together some overflowing mugs of beer with strangers.

Some other songs that caught my attention were Mousse T featuring Roachford with Pop Muzak, Juli with Perfekte Welle, L'ame immortelle with 5 Jahre, Rosenstolz with Willkommen and Volker Rosin Featuring Chris Rabatz with Känguruh Dance. Speaking of Mousse T, I LOVE Horny and the Tom Jones and Mousse T song “Sex Bomb” was pretty good, too. He is a very talented producer.

The most surprising entry came in at number 99 during the previous week. This song was Luka - To Nem Ai, which if any of you remember was my favorite song being played in Help Disco and other Rio clubs during my August 2003 trip to Brazil.

The German charts seemed filled with a great variety of music in many different languages. I didn’t download the entire top 100, but did find some cool stuff. If Peter29 or anyone else has some other suggestions or I am missing out on some stuff that is really popular in Germany right now, please let me know. I still can’t get that “Dragostea Din Tei” song out of my mind.

In all, I downloaded about 33 songs….

Xeno,

I will reply more tomorrow, but Dragostea Din Tei terrorized the German Charts all summer long. Ozone are 3 pretty gay Moldovans who sing in Romanian. It means "Under the Oak Tree" or something similar to that. This song was #1 for 14 weeks and although catchy at first, the pathetic parts like "Hallo, Haiduck!" get on your nerves. The Haiduci version is the Italian Cover version.

Trust me this sng is horrible! If you see the video to O-Zone you will fall down laughing. MTV didn't play the video until it actually hit #1.

But the german charts are somewhat more multi-dimensional than the American ones. I find the british charts to be the most diverse around.

I actually have two versions of the video I downloaded. I will admit the guys look pretty gay and I'd imagine that this song, like many pop songs, got completely overplayed the first couple of weeks which led to burnout and backlash.

The first version of the video I have shows the dudes dancing on the wing of an airplane and inside the cabin and then later in the video the propellers turn into speakers.

The other version I have is a live performance on Top of the Pops (I think.) Four hot chicks in denim skirts and white tank tops come out and dance in the background, but the airplane moments they make with their arms (both the guys and ladies) is indeed gay.

Ok, here we go.

After coming back from Germany I heard one song on the radio over and over again. That song was:

Natasha Bedingfield - These Words
http://www.natasha-bedingfield.de/

She is kind of cute. You can watch the video or listen to the song at the website listed above.

Here is the direct link:

http://www.natasha-bedingfield.de/content/music_video.html

Ironically enough, I only heard Dragostea Din Tei once in the clubs and not a single time on the radio.

I also heard the Aventura - Obsession song played a lot at the FKK's. I think I heard it a few times at World last night.

Finally, there is another song I don't know the name of. The words go something like, "Go Pump it up, you've got to pump it up." My Dominicana at Oase had to jump up on stage and dance every time she heard this song. I'll have to find that one.

Around the Cologne area the radio station I listened to most was Einslive.
http://www.einslive.de/

There was another, I think British station for the British military called BFBS.

http://www.ssvc.com/bfbs/radio/germany/

Around the Frankfurt area there was an American forces radio station as well. The one thing that stood out from that was a sexual harassment PSA that absolutely made me cringe.

The audio went something along the lines of "I was only flirting with the PFC." Then the voiceover came along and said, "Remember, sexual harassment is not defined by you. It is defined by the person feeling harassed."

By that definition it can obviously be taken to ridiculous extremes and used in very non-productive ways.

Ok.

The Pump it Up song is called "Pump it up" by Danzel.

It is currently number 25 on the BBC Top 40 Chart, down from 17 last week.

Xeno,

I really loved the Natasha Bedingfield song for about 3 weeks. It was my absolute favourite for a while. It has a nice hip hop feel with a great hook where the bass drops in 3 stages. I loved it. Got a little bored of it in the meantime though.

You did name the best 2 radio stations in this area. In the Frankfurt area I would have to suggest FFH at 105,9 or HR3 at 89,9 or close to town the best station is Planet Radio at 100,2.

The frequency of the stations in this area are Einslive at 106,7 and BFBS at 96,5.

In some of these areas you can also get BIGFM which is also a quite good station.

The pump it up song gets a little repetitive though.

The Obsession song is like the winter Dragostea din tei song. There are 2 versions on the chart, the spanish and the english, spanish by aventura and the english by 3rd wish featuring baby bash.

The best song out there at the moment though is "Call on Me" by Eric Prydz. The video is better than a porno, and the song is a great dance mix of the old Steve Winwood refrain.

Otherwise excellent tips, can't wait to read your report. Don't be too harsh on my favourite club.
