If you find yourself in Thailand during football season be sure to pick up the Bangkok Post on Sunday. A friend of mine named Dick Thorton, a former pro player and coach, writes a half-page article called "Coaching Points" each week in the season. He's a great guy who lives in Manilla and is a great writer. He covers NFL football from a reporter, coach, and gambler point of view.

Peyton Manning.......the Arod of the NFL. Great in the regular season......a loser in the playoffs.

By Porker on Saturday, January 12, 2013 - 06:58 pm:  Edit

Does he play Safety with less than a minute left in the 4th q up a TD? Does he call pass interference on the ball returned for a pick 6 in the first q?

Only big glaring hit me after THIS game is that Champ Bailey is a lot worse than Torrey Freakin' Smith

If Holiday doesn't return a punt and kickoff for touchdowns they lose in regulation.

All the experts talk how bad Tebow was and he won one more playoff game than Manning has for the Broncos.

Manning has more playoff losses (11) than any other quarterback in NFL history.

30 touchdowns versus 21 interceptions in the playoffs for Manning.

Just like Arod......great regular season stats.....just average or below average in the playoffs!

One sees what they want to see. Blaming this one on Manning is fair if one ignores the fantastic game he played up to that play and the horrible DB play.

Coach fetal position Fox also took a knee to end half and regulation and dove into line on 3rd down in late 4th to run clock. Pundits wondering if Manning was hurt early on?

By Jumbo12 on Saturday, January 12, 2013 - 08:32 pm:  Edit

Fantastic game by Manning, Ha Ha......do you even know what his QB rating was for the game. Manning played his typical post season game......he was average or below average.

Tebow's QB rating last year in the playoffs against the Steelers.....125.6....highest in the Broncos history. Manning today in the 80's maybe. With an offense that Elway built around Manning.

Again.....Tebow has more playoff wins than Manning for the Broncos.

Just like Arod.....Manning, great in the regular season and average or below average in the playoffs.

QB ratings heavily influenced by int's. The first INT was the result of pass interference that stupid refs didn't call. The last one, a boneheaded error, but his first mistake of the whole game. 75 minutes, 1 mistake, seems like a pretty fantastic game up until the final play, which is exactly what I wrote.

But, again, haters see what they want to see.

re: Tebow, he'll be on the street looking for a job soon. Anybody can sign him for veteran's minimum. I'm pretty sure no team will touch him. I don't agree with that, I think Kaepernick showed last night what a running QB can do, but nobody gonna bet all-in on Tebow again.

BTW, I LOVE the logic-challenged knuckle scrapers who claim that a skilled athlete's greatness is defined by clutch performance that results in "rings". As if one player is responsible for lifting his teammates to greatness.

Yeah, Robert Horry is 9 times better than Lebron James.

Remember the days when Tom Brady was actually GOOD and won super bowls?

Yeah, Arod hit 650 HR's and won gold gloves, but JETER was the true super star because he won a bunch of world series 15 years ago...

By Jumbo12 on Sunday, January 13, 2013 - 11:57 am:  Edit

When is the last time Manning won a Super Bowl much less a playoff game.

Now you are comparing role players with super stars.....Horry and James.

We are talking about the post season......Manning has lost 11 playoff games.....most by a QB in NFL history.

30 touchdowns versus 21 interceptions in the post season for Manning. His stats in the post season are like Arod's. Average or below average!

Robert Horry regular season and playoff stats.

Points per game:
regular season - 7.0 playoffs- 7.9

Rebonds per game:
regular season- 4.8 playoffs-5.6

Statistically, Horry is better in the playoffs than the regular season. Both Manning and Arod are way worse statistically in the playoffs versus the regular season.

To be considered one of the greats.....if your team gets into the post season......you have to perform as well or better in the post season as you performed in the regular season.

Manning and Arod are just average or below average in the playoffs....that doesn't put them in the elite class overall when you judge the others at their positions who in their careers produced in the post season.

Porker is forgetting Mannings fumble that led to a score. 3 turnovers that led to scores. Manning needs a clean pocket to operate and clean pockets are hard to come by during the playoffs. When the pocket collapse, he panics and does not look up upfield. He has horrendous footwork in the pocket.

Manning tried his best to give away games during his lone SB win by trowing SEVEN INTERCEPTIONS during the playoffs. Bob Sanders is the reason he even has a ring.

By Jumbo12 on Sunday, January 13, 2013 - 03:06 pm:  Edit

Blazers....you are right.

Manning is so overrated.

The Colts won the Super Bowl in spite of Manning the year the won.

11 playoff games lost.....most by QB in NFL history ......21 interceptions with only 30 touchdowns....

As Porker says, "one sees what they want to see." Porker must have not seen the fumble or was that the refs fault too.

By Porker on Sunday, January 13, 2013 - 11:00 pm:  Edit

Shocked about the attention to detail when Peyton loses a game (a rarity). Can anyone imagine applying this same HE SUCKS logic to a Romo or Vick or Cutler? People here act like Peyton is a glorified Josh Freeman!

Let me know when Matt Ryan gets to 11 playoff games, never mind losing them...

By Porker on Sunday, January 13, 2013 - 11:02 pm:  Edit

Peyton is top 2 all time any stat you want to name rated.

Your next piss from the lips is "But, but, Terry Bradshaw won a bunch of super bowls, blah blah blah"

By Bluestraveller on Monday, January 14, 2013 - 03:08 am:  Edit

Is there any doubt that Payton Manning will be in the Hall of Fame? In fact, he will get it on his first try. It is a slam dunk.

By Jumbo12 on Monday, January 14, 2013 - 05:38 am:  Edit

When Peyton loses a game.......he has lost more playoff games than he has won!

Rogers and Manning are better just among active QB's.

By Blazers on Monday, January 14, 2013 - 12:44 pm:  Edit

Porker always likes to ignore the stats of Manning and bring up regular season stats or make the claim that we think that rings are the only indicator of a great QB. Of course rings are not the only indicator. Look at Marino whom never had a good defense to work with, even the one year he went to the SB. Marino played well in the playoffs but his defenses ate shit. Elway took teams that had no business even making the playoffs and took three teams to the SB all by himself.

I compare Manning to Manning(not his brother). Peyton just cannot handle pressure well and is ordinary in cold weather. Peyton lost 4 playoff games AT HOME. Peyton has a quirk in his game which translates to the field. He has crappy footwork in the pocket and gets "happy feet" when there is pressure. Instead of looking upfield to see if a receiver is open, he immediately puts his head down and gives up on the play. The other thing Peyton does is change his delivery under pressure which is the reason for a lot of his picks.

One thing to consider Porker is that Manning has had at least 2 pro bowlers on his offensive line in his entire career..in 5 seasons he had 3 pro bowl offensive lineman. He has had at least two pro bowlers receiver/running back positions for his entire career until Denver. Some would say that he makes receivers great but lets be real and say that he may end up having TWO HOF receivers at the same time for several years.

Lastly, the Colts were a top 5 defense in all but 2 of the years he played. There is a reason why Andrew Luck made the Colts immediately good and its because they already had a great defense and a superb offensive line.

Porker is confusing fantasy football stats with real numbers when it counts and Manning is crappy when it counts.

Now, on the flip side, his brother Eli benefitted from a superb defense and stellar offensive line and I still do not consider him an elite QB because of how poorly he plays during the regular season that prevents the Giants from being in the playoffs. The two years they won, they were very lucky along the way although Eli did play well during crucial downs. Be that as it may, you cannot simply say that he is a HOF player simply on a few games when the guy is an interception machine during the regular season.

I wonder if Porker ever really played sports. At whatever level....the playoffs and championships are where the real respect is earned that seperates the greats from the rest.

Manning with the talent around him over the years has failed to be a great leader that has carried a team or motivatd a team in the post season.

The one Super Bowl the Colts did win ....the Colts got through the playoffs in spite of Manning's performance.

In the Super Bowl who would rather have...Montana, Brady, Aikmen, etc. even Eli....instead of Peyton.

I don't like the Patriots or Brady...but in the 2 Super Bowl loses if Brady would have gotten the ball last.....my guess is they would have won one if not both of those Super Bowls.

By Catocony on Monday, January 14, 2013 - 10:44 pm:  Edit

31 quarterbacks, including great ones, lose the last game of their season. If you don't consider Peyton Manning great because of his playoff performances, then I guess that Brett Favre wasn't great. Elway won two at the end of his career, but lost a lot of playoff games before those two seasons. Jim Kelly sucked, since he only took the Bills to the Super Bowl 4 straight years but lost. Steve Young only won one Super Bowl, he must suck too. Warren Moon, Donovan McNabb, Steve McNair, they all stink too.

If you want to go old-school, then Boomer Esiason, Dan Fouts, Fran Tarkenton, Bernie Kosar - those guys were bums.

Did Manning have a great game Saturday? Probably not, but he played a good game. When your team scores 35 points and loses, that's not the offense's fault. Sure, 14 points came from special teams, but 35 points should be the Ravens 95% of the time. They're not exactly an offensive juggernaut.

By Porker on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 - 08:52 pm:  Edit

Re: Manning's pro bowl teammates, jeez, how many were pro bowlers before or after his tenure? Manning gets hurt in 2011, team goes from Super Bowl contender to dead last, lucky to win a game. He took a 8-8 team in Denver with a pop gun attack and got them a home field bye.

Re: "Re: Happy Feet", he had them in the AFC title comeback game against the esteemed Patriots and the result sure worked out in that game. Show me the happy feet last saturday?

Jumbo has got to be the new iteration of "Maximus", as I can't imagine anyone spewing the same exact vein of CRAP about his pet peeves Arod and Manning. If it's truly Max, is this the time when he starts blustering about what a great softball player he is?

By Catocony on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 - 09:33 pm:  Edit

Maximus, the devout Catholic monger? I remember him from the TJ scene a decade ago.

By Blazers on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 - 01:50 pm:  Edit

You can put Brett Favre in the same boat as Manning...both choke in big games.

Kelly actually did better in big games than Manning and getting a team to 4 straight Super Bowls is an amazing feat. Were it not for a Cowboy dynasty and Scott Norwood, he would have a ring or two.

Cannot compare him to Steve Young. Young excelled in big games and rarely threw picks in big games. What people dont realize is that Young has 3 rings AND that he was a starter in 4 games during the 1989 season, including the crucial game against the Vikings which turned him into a human highlight machine.

At least Ray Lewis has an alibi today......the last time there was a stabbing after a Pro football game in Atlanta Ray Lewis was involved......
