A few thoughts on learning another language.

This is the last of the Pimsleur lessons. There were 90 altogether. That's about 45 hours worth of instruction. When I first started the series I expected to be finished within 5 or 6 months. Instead, it has taken almost a year and a half. Lots of stop and go moments. I also never expected to still be waiting for my second trip to Rio. Lots of personal hassles combined with wanting to avoid the hottest and most humid months has kept me sitting here instead of enjoying myself.

So where are you after taking this course? Can you speak the language? How about understanding it when someone else is speaking? And what about reading?

When I started the course I soon found that knowing Spanish was of little value. However, by the end of Part II I was starting to find that it was becoming an advantage as my vocabulary reached a certain level. I can certainly talk about any number of things although it takes a while to make a point and I know I am butchering the language at times. Several months ago I found someone locally to practice with once a week for an hour. Unless they speak VERY slowly I still can only understand small bits and pieces. But I can see some progress and know that if I were to take the plunge and live in Rio for 3 months or so I would really jam on the language. Reading the news in fairly easy at this point since so many words are similar to Spanish even if they are usually pronounced very different.

Learning another language is like being in a very dark house. All the windows are shuttered and the light swiches only work for tiny dim night lights. But in time you begin to see more and more. Rooms, or words, begin to slowly connect with others. Hesitant movements become increasingly rapid. Over time the darkness is pushed back.

"What a long strange trip it's been."
