The biggest problem with abstinence only programs is that they have very little effectiveness over the long term. The kids will eventually have sex; it is only a matter of when.
They made indeed work in the short term, but when these kids do start having sex they have absolutely no information about contraception or protection from STD's.
It is such a huge dis-service to the American public to promote an abstinence only agenda. I really wonder if the people that believe they can somehow "teach" kids not to have sex live in the same world as the rest of us. And now because they didn't teach kids how to have sex safely and take precautions, things could end up much worse and they have unsafe and unprotected sex when they do start having start. But hey, at least the "religious right" is happy. And that is all the REALLY matters...
The other problem is that kids are not stupid. They eventually figure out they have been lied to and then they just shut down and don’t listen to anything that is said or told to them. It takes a long time to regain their trust again.
I would not argue that abstinence needs to be or should be taught. But it needs to be taught as part of a comprehensive sex education package where EVERYTHING is discussed including contraception and protection. Wouldn’t that be a lot better than teaching abstinence only? No, because then the religious right says as soon as you talk about contraception and protection you are encouraging kids to have sex. What bullshit! So let's lie to them instead. LOL!

I sometimes think that doing things that doesn't work is the real American Way.

Don't worry, be happy. :-)
This will kill off some of the stupid people who believe 100% in everything their wise and all-knowing leaders tell them.
That is the big problem with this country today, heh, heh

I practiced abstinence for one day yesterday. That was difficult. I don't think abstinence programs are realistic.
On a more serious note, I don't think the Catholic church's abstinence prgram for priests is working too well either. Something about what happens when you subvert human nature.

I've been abstinant since Monday morning and I must say, that snaggle-toothed Condi Rice is starting to look almost fuckable. That's about all the support I can stand to give the Republican Party - fucking their women.

Yep, last year was not too pretty, heh :-)
You can probably guess by now where my political tendencies go. But I've made a resolution for `05 not to take things too seriously, otherwise, you will just stress yourself out with all this stuff. And there's not much anyone can do about it now anyway. Should be interesting though, to see how long I keep my resolution, heh. . . ;-)

Torpedo: Why the pessimism? We are winning the war in Iraq and all those bad terrorists will soon disappear; Iraq is going to have a democratic election where the will of the people (i.e., those who aren't afraid of getting blown up) will be evidenced at the polls; the youth of today have adopted abstinence in response to GW's programs and there will be no more teen pregnancies or yicky diseases spread; GW is on the road to having the "sex tourism" industry licked, thereby freeing the world of the scourge of underage sex slaves; and closer to home, we have profound thinkers like Whoretester to educate us. What could be better?

You know what would solve all of the problems in Iraq and unite the nation into a pacifist, peaceful nation?
A tax cut!
