What a great day for hockey. I got my dream final 4 years later. Team Canada was just incredible today.
Too bad the NY Rangers had 5 players in the Olympics final but can't seem to win any game.

I've got to stay up late tonight to see(on ESPN2) that ass kick'n the Wild unleashed on Vancouver last night.

I do doubt that Minnesota will advance, but it feels great to see them put up a good fight.

By Athos on Tuesday, May 06, 2003 - 09:14 am:  Edit

Vanvouver is overrated so series is not over. Ducks go to the finals vs Senators.

By Rb1 on Tuesday, May 06, 2003 - 02:31 pm:  Edit

Vancouver whole problem is goaltending. They have managed to get this far (in the playoffs) with little help from either Naslund or Bertuzzi, so I wouldn't call them overrated. They also have had the best road record all year, so don't be ready to chalk up a Wild game 6 victory. On the other hand, Fernandez has, for the most part, owned the Canucks this year. So it should be interesting.
I didn't get a chance to see the game, I do have it on tape. But from what I heard, Melrose said the Canucks just had a major meltdown. Winning a 4th game in the playoffs is the hardest one to get especially at home.

By Athos on Tuesday, May 06, 2003 - 03:45 pm:  Edit

Ducks won a great game last night and beat best team in NHL. Wild scored 4 goals in second period, just atrocious goals. I agree Cloutier is a journeyman. The thing about the Canucks, they are big on D. Both Wild goalies are better. Giguere gives up goals only on deflection or when he is screened. I am interested to see how Senators fare against Devils.

By Rb1 on Tuesday, May 06, 2003 - 04:49 pm:  Edit

After seeing the tape,,yes all 4 goals in the second were bad. Jovo also had a terrible game with a minus 4. Cloutier screwed up clearing the puck which led to the first goal. Heck at least he didn't give up any
past the blueline goals, yet, this post season like last year.
Even though he gave up an awful goal,,I think Auld is the goalie of the future in Vancouver. He played well,,with the except of that third period goal, for the Canucks in the few games in got in.
If the devils score first, they will be tough to beat.
Guguere is looking great. Just hope he can handle the pressure. He wouldn't be the first goalie to stand on his head, against good teams, in the first couple of rounds only to fold during the Conference finals.

By Astaroth on Tuesday, May 06, 2003 - 07:20 pm:  Edit

Cloutier is playing injured.

The Ducks look just like the Capitals from the 98 cup series. Mostly goaltending and defense, although the Ducks are solidifying better than the Capitals did then AND the Ducks are playing a tougher schedule since the Capitals benefited from the top 3 teams all getting eliminated in the first round. THe Ducks have actually done the eliminating.

When is game 7 for the Vancouver/Minnesota series gonna be?

By Athos on Thursday, May 08, 2003 - 08:34 am:  Edit

Tonight at 7:00 pm on espn2 and cbc (nhl package).
Both conf. finals start on Sat.

By Snapper on Friday, May 09, 2003 - 12:11 am:  Edit

Damn, I guess I shouldn't have doubted the Wild as soon as I did. Great f'n game.

By Athos on Friday, May 09, 2003 - 09:11 am:  Edit

It was indeed a great game. Now I am not sure who goes through in the West. Wild has speed.

By Athos on Friday, May 09, 2003 - 03:58 pm:  Edit

In Finland, Sweden and Canada have reached the World finals. Peter Forsberg and Mats Sundin vs Danny Heatley and Eric Brewer. Go Canucks.

i usually pay attention to trends and although i'm not a hockey guy at all
no team has ever lost a stanley cup final after having eight or more days rest from the semifianls. so the ducks will win
no team has ever lost the first two games on the road and come back to win the stanley cup finals. so the devils will win
he who lives by the sword, dies by the sword. so the ducks will lose in overtime.
haven't watched a game this entire year, but will be watching this one.

The Canadiens lost the first 2 road games in 1971 and won in 7 beating Blackhawks.
Great game so far...go Ducks.

Penguins trade up to take a GOALIE first overall? WTF? DiPietro (2000 #1 overall) STILL isn't a startable goalie, and high picks on goalies are an extreme risk, which IF they pay off will pay off years down the line. Where have you gone, Mario Lemieux?

By Snapper on Saturday, June 21, 2003 - 02:10 pm:  Edit

He most likely won't even get to suit-up for Penguins next year. Penguins are looking a couple years into the future with their rebuilding.

As a long suffering LA King fan just look at Rob Stauber and Jamie Storr- both high first round cannot miss picks . One in AHL-- if even there now-- the other still- " has promise " but never delivered on the promise. Most great goalies come out of nowhere after 3-5 years of obscurity in the minors ala J.S. Giguerre.

By Snapper on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 10:26 pm:  Edit

Redwing, so what team do you like? -lol

By Porker on Wednesday, June 25, 2003 - 12:07 am:  Edit

Drafting a goalie in the first round is like drafting a high school pitcher in the first round of the baseball draft. Odds are looong that the guy will ever be a star, much less for the team that drafted him. For every Dwight Gooden and Kerry Wood there's a Todd Van Poppel and Clyde Wright.

In a sport where you can get a young Dominik Hasek for pretty much NOTHING and where guys come out of the woodwork to star EVERY YEAR (see the abovementioned Giguere) should make it really damned clear that picking a goalie #1 is stupid, stupid, stupid.

A long-suffering Kings fan? Please tell me your allegiance dates back to the purple and gold and not to when they acquired that skinny blonde guy.

By Khun_mor on Wednesday, June 25, 2003 - 11:20 pm:  Edit

Porkster.
I was at the Fabulous Forum when Butch Goring scored his OT goal to defeat the Big Bad Bruins in the playoffs.
The only thing the blond dude did for me was to double my season seat prices in one year and they have gone progressively up from there.

By Porker on Thursday, June 26, 2003 - 10:51 am:  Edit

Butch Goring! Old time hawkey!

By Rb1 on Thursday, June 26, 2003 - 09:55 pm:  Edit

nice to see some other ol' time SoCal hockey fans.
I go back to the days of the WHA San Diego Mariners. Was great to see Hull, for you kids that is Bobby not his kid brett, and the old man Gordie Howe.

By Khun_mor on Friday, June 27, 2003 - 04:19 pm:  Edit

Rb-- been a so cal fan for about 25 years -- since I been out here. Before that I had season seats on the blue line in the first row of the third balconey at the Old Chicago Stadium . What a hockey building- great view almost hanging out over the ice. Got to see Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita in their prime. Awesome players. Bobby would have had a couple hundred more goals if he only had better centers. He had to do it all for himself- lug the puck all the way up the ice and break into the zone. All that with goons like Bugsy Watson hanging all over him.

By Rb1 on Friday, June 27, 2003 - 09:25 pm:  Edit

Khun mor,,,boy the NHL isn't the same game since most of the old barns have been replaced. Back then, home ice meant something. Your Chicago stadium with the loud fans right on top of you. The ol' Boston Garden with it's short ice. Now days for the most part all the rinks are the same it seems.

By Khun_mor on Saturday, June 28, 2003 - 03:54 pm:  Edit

Could not agree with you more Rb1 ! Even here in LA I thought the old Forum was much better for fans than the sterile Staples center. That place is a huge barn set up for the comfort and pleasure of the luxury boxes primarily. Corporate types do not make for good fans- rarely cheer or even watch the game for that matter. The real fans are being priced out of the game totally !! A fuckin shame. I hope the players come to their senses and do not force a work stoppage next year. The ownners got to give some too, but this is one sport without a huge TV cash cow to feed the owners. The players are way overpaid right now.

By Rb1 on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 01:24 pm:  Edit

Khun mor...cracks me up the most expensive seats in the house are some of the worst. If you're going to seat low,,,you need to be behind the net so you can see the game. If you're down too low on the side you end up watching it up on the big screen. Hell for that you might as well stay home. But like you said, it's the corporate types who don't know any better.
I went to a game this year at Staples. Had to sit up high so I could afford it,,,man it took forever to get out of the damn place.

Heading into the conference finals the team that`s winning the most meaningful stat battles is San Jose, if they continue to win these battles and get to the finals would most likely win the cup. The least likely team to win the cup is Calgary, they are getting beat up in the most meaningful stats. Tampa bay and Philly are average but could get to championship level if either team can turn it up this round.

The best senerio would be for Tampa and San Jose to get to the finals and have the so called experts on ESPN picking Tampa to win, that would give tremendous value on San Jose with the odds to win the series, a nice dog.

A nice way to play it from this point would be to take Philly over Tampa on the series odds and San Jose over Calgary on the series odds , if both lose then take Tampa over Calgary , if both win then play the winnings only on San Jose over Philly to either break even or win again, if one wins and one loses then it`s break even and on to the finals, take either San Jose over Tampa or Philly over Calgary.

I'm watching the game now, with baited breath. Who to cheer for? Good question. Although I have live in Florida longer than in Canada, the Labatts runs thicker in my viens than does the orange juice. Go Calgary.
Can you believe the fans? I've never seen a sporting event where virtually everyone in attendance is wearing team colors. Those friggin Canuucks and and their hockey, eh?

Being a hockey fan and no fan of either team ,( a long suffering King's fan ) I was rooting for a game 7 only. It has been a great series. Gets about zero ratings in US though because of the 2 teams involved. What a shame a great series like this is going unwatched.I think Calgary will pull it off in Tampa . Home ice means nothing in this years playoffs. Calgary is actually a much better team on the road. Tampa gotta have their nuts in their throat at home.

By Fooledagain1 on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 11:13 am:  Edit

Just survive baby !!! Tampa should wrap up the cup in game 7.

Tampa over Calgary, game 6 --- 3 units to win 3 units --- WON 3 UNITS

NHL Playoffs to date --- WON 5 UNITS

Picks still working:

Tampa to win series (-230) --- 11.5 units to win 5 units
Tampa to win seies (down 0-1,+135) --- 2 units to win 2.7 units

By Athos on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 02:16 pm:  Edit

Am crushed...expect very low scoring game in 7, grabbing and clutching, referee has already swallowed whistle. Somehow Iginla has to find a way to score. 1-0 can go either way, crowd irrelevant, only home advantage is home team has last change of lines. Tampa has better goalie too.
