FUND-RAISER 'FLUBBED' HILLARY DATA

May 8, 2005 -- A tape secretly recorded for the FBI by Sen. Ted Kennedy's brother-in-law has Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's fund-raiser admitting that a Hollywood gala may have cost way more than her filings said, it was reported yesterday.

Clinton fund-raiser David Rosen told Kennedy in-law Ray Reggie over dinner that a donor is claiming "he spent $2 million on an event that raised $1.4. . . . He may have," The Times-Picayune of New Orleans reported.

Reggie — whose sister Victoria married Kennedy in 1992 — wore an FBI wire and taped what prosecutors call an "incriminating" chat with Rosen over dinner in Chicago in 2000.

Yesterday's report offers a partial transcript of that conversation with Rosen — who'll soon go on trial for filing false reports - over steaks, Beringer wine and vanilla ice cream at Chicago's posh Morton's.

The partial transcript isn't definitive, but prosecutors, in other filings, claim to have witnesses who say Rosen told them there was "no way" he could truthfully report the Aug. 12, 2000 gala's cost.

The key point is that if the gala really cost $2 million, much of that was secretly and illegally donated. Sen. Clinton is cooperating with the probe and prosecutors say she isn't a target.

Over their meal, Rosen also told Reggie a rambling anecdote about a big Clinton donor who, after a night of partying, sent hookers to the hotel rooms of two Clinton loyalists.

"So the next day, [one of the loyalists] calls [the donor] from the golf course with Clinton," Rosen related. "Clinton gets on the phone, he goes, 'I just wanna tell you something . . . The day I'm outta office, I'm going out with you.' "

The first time I hit Rio, Clinton was there hanging with Antony Hopkins. It was after Clinton left office. Coincidentally, Castro was in Rio around the same time, probably overlapping with Clinton's time there (undoubtedly Castro had a stash of cigars; don't know if he contributed any to Clinton's sex toy collection). At one point Clinton was spotted buying some bikinis at one of the Rio stores, which he then said were a present for Chelsea. I don't know if anyone checked to see whether Clinton's bikini's were extra-small, an indication he would have been following Sandman's advice. In any case, wish I knew the whole story of what went on behind closed doors during his visit!

He stayed at the Marriott Jardins in Sao Paulo last year too.

When Clinton was in office I used to live in the DC area, and worked right across the street from the White House. About once a week I'd head up the street to the 1720 Club, a (now defunct) strip joint about a block and a half from the White House. I have no doubt Clinton would have enjoyed going there, and lived within easy walking distance. But I could go there, and he couldn't. Ironic, but fame does have its price...
