I've been mongering on and off for 20 years now. I know how to get there, where to stay, how to speak the language, how to get around, and where I can find the best talent. Sounds easy right? I mean, how hard can it be? I've already done the home thing on my own and it was very easy...especially with the newest and relatively inexpensive digital dubbing and mixing movie-making software out there.

Tell me what you all know...how can I be a start-up porno filmmaker? If I film overseas...what do I need to know so that I do not end up in jail, sued, or worse? What are the risks and pitfalls that you know? How much funding will I need to get started...$50K...$100K, or more? What are the rules about importing porn from O/S to the US?

Also, who out there wants to become a porn star?

I have no specifics in regards to your questions, but I would offer up the following things you should also consider.

1. While there are almost no barriers to entry (anyone can film porn and put up a website), actually getting people to visit it and give you their money is another matter entirely.

2. Most successful porn sites these days seem to be "groups" of sites made under one label or company. One is a cream pie site, another is a blowjob site, and another is a lesbian site. Each one caters to a niche. Your $29.95 membership gets you access to ALL the sites. (Another note about this to the general audience if you have a membership to any network of porn sites.) Be sure to cancel and you almost ALWAYS get a discount to something more reasonable like $14.95 or $9.95 instead of the price you signup under.

3. You'll need to find a reliable bandwidth provider that specializes in hosting adult content. If you are putting up videos, expect people to share passwords and to download a LOT of content. You have to have the infrastructure to support this.

4. You are going to have to market your site to get people to visit. There are hundreds of thousands of porn sites on the web. What makes your idea special? What separates your content? What are you offering your visitors? And how much are willing to pay a search engine optimizer or spammer to market your site for you? Unless, of course, you want to just market it yourself.

5. Be sure to retain a good lawyer that specializes in adult and porn law.

6. Be sure all your record keeping is in order and complies with USC 2257.

7. If you aren't updating your content at least once a week, you'll need to. People will need a reason to keep coming back. You'll constantly need to be shooting new content to keep the site fresh. Otherwise, people will download and cancel.

8. It may sound like a good idea at the surface to just grab a camera and start filming. I would offer that it, like any other business, needs to be carefully thought out and planned. How committed to it are you? Are you willing to do what it takes to be successful? I think your biggest problem will be competing with the thousands of other sites already out there and getting visitors to your sites. I think your second biggest issue will be making sure you comply with all the US federal laws regarding making porn and then any laws that apply in the country you are filming in.

That is just a list off the top of my head. Another member here at CH seems to be setting up something similar in Brazil. He probably has a lot more experience with the specifics that are needed and maybe he will chime in.

And you will need signed releases from your models. Get a release translated into the language of whatever country you'll be filming your models. As part of the code Xen mentions above, you'll need to maintain proof of age, so photocopy or take digital photographs of their ID cards.
