However, I do believe that McNabb IS over-rated, if only because his play since his injury has been abysmal.

By Ben on Saturday, October 04, 2003 - 08:08 am:  Edit

I think McNabb is a very good top tier quarterback (excluding this year) and I don't think most sports writers have a social agenda NOW about black quarterbacks. I would guess there are at least 9 or 10 starters in the NFL today who are Afro-American.

Rush is just tiresome and was probably trying to stir the pot by saying something outrageous and just showed that he is a bigot.

Not all Republican's enjoy or listen to his show.

By Explorer8939 on Saturday, October 04, 2003 - 02:16 pm:  Edit

Uh, oh, it looks like drug use is going to catch up with Rush real soon now.

I hear you can get rich by being a Republican. Would that work for me? Where would I sign up?

This is a fascinating and hilarious discussion! I love it!!

I listened to Rush for years back when I was driving a truck (or was that just a flashback..) Anyway, I loved his show though I despised his opinions and incredibly simple-minded analysis. But it's getting worse - Bill O'Reilly makes Rush Limbaugh look like a genius!

I remember Rush talking about when ABC was considering putting him on Monday Night Football (they went with Dennis Miller instead). Having listened to Rush for years, he COULD have been an outstanding football announcer/analyst -- if he wanted to.

But I have to agree with the opinions above that Rush is smart enough to have known (or should have known) not to say something as blatantly inflamitory as that. But I also know that he really did want to be a football announcer.

So, who knows? The only thing for sure is that he is a big idiot, if no longer fat.

Rush admits to pain killer addiction. Too bad the poor bastard lives in NYC - woulda never had a problem if he lived near the MX border. Oh well.. God speed, Rush - though you're wrong 99 of the time. :-)

Rush needs and is getting a healthy dose of humility. We'll see if this softens his views on people that are outside is narrow point of view.

Personally, I think he's one of the most divisive people in media and the fact his big mouth is silent for the next month is great news. Good riddance.

By Orgngrndr on Saturday, October 11, 2003 - 11:05 am:  Edit

I first heard Rush Limbaugh back in the 80's when I was driving around in a company car that didn't have FM, only AM. I remember he was rallying listeners to burn/destroy their Cat Stevens records because he was a converted Muslim and was critical of US policy in the Middle East.

I thought to myself : "As Bugs Bunny would say, What a marooon" As it was about the only station that was clear enough to listen to, I had to suffer this idiot for the next hour I was in the car. It then occurred to me that most of the callers, were asked back then to what city/state/region they were calling from. Most of these "dildoheads" were from bumfuck, iowa or creamcorn, nebraska or many of the thousands of pissant communities were than cursed with mainly AM radio. It seems that Rush Limbaugh had his show syndicated mainly to AM station that could be heard for hundreds of miles, and had very little competition over the airwaves.
Later when it was noticed that his audience were mainly crackers, the show stoped asking the wherabouts of its callers, inferring they were from all over. The strategy worked and soon the show was picked up by mainstream markets, and then eventually to network television. It was quickly cancelled because of weak ratings but then Fox news came in and...

But what strike me is is unashamedly rightious (and rightest) opinion of himself and the low opinion he has to anybody he disagees with him. This includes propagating false and made up stories about politicians, etc.etc.

But what really pissed me off was that he thrived on controversy. He was unashamed to castigate the poor, whose misery he expunged with "This is America, get a Job" forgetting the poor refered to were children. Or embraced the conservative view that All drug users (not just dealers)were a menace to society and we should build more jails to house them all, criticising the liberal point of view that rehab and treatment was more effective (and vastly cheaper) remedy than jail and prison. And how he jumped on the Hollywood elite and actors like Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe and especially Robert Downy Jr. All who sought treatment, either on their own or to avoid criminal prosecution.

The few times I listened, I always asked myself? (facetiously) Is this man on drugs??

Well I can honestly say I have been right all along.

I do not feel sorry that RL has to seek treatment. I am not sorry there is a criminal investigation looming. I know full well that with the money and political pull this person has he will never face a criminal penalty or face jail time, unlke hundreds of thousands of people who are in the same fix he's in, who will face the loss of their jobs, families, and face real criminal penalties.. All because of the conservative bent this country has taken, thanks in large part to his efforts to alienate the public against liberal thinking and to marginalize those who promote values such as drug rehabilitation so antithical to him.

It seems almost unfair that he would take refuge in the very activities he so vehemenantly ridicules on his show.

No doubt the spin on this will not be his hypocritical behavior with his "rush to treatment" or his loss of credibility with his diehard fans, but will center on his "brave realization of his trouble" or his "facing a challenge that is bigger than him" or any one of hundred of platitudes that will be spouted by the conservative right spinmeisters or the Fox publicity teams.

But I applaud that Rush Limbaugh will get a good dose of liberal reality and who knows, he may become a better person for it or at least, as Hunter Thompson put it "until the drugs take hold"

Ldvee,

If nearly going deaf (or was it a publicity stunt?) a few years back didn't put a damper on his hypocracy, do you think a month in a clinic will?

I hope the fucker dies from drowning in his own vomit, or, on his next drug run, gets shivved from a $5 crack whore.

By Gcl on Saturday, October 11, 2003 - 09:29 pm:  Edit

I usually agree with him. I also hope he recovers and stops doing drugs. Lots of hate on this board.

By Laguy on Saturday, October 11, 2003 - 10:44 pm:  Edit

GCL: <<lots>> Yeah right. Lots of hate on this board and Limbaugh is just a pussycat.

By Gcl on Sunday, October 12, 2003 - 03:58 am:  Edit

Well say what you want about him but Limbaugh is a thinker and gives thoughtful responses and debate. Generally speaking, name calling isnt very good form and certainly wouldnt impress anyone with the writers point.

By jkarp on Sunday, October 12, 2003 - 10:09 am:  Edit

Yes, he is a thinker alright. A thinker who is an addict, a hypocrite, a hatemonger, a racist, and off course, a millionaire. I literally wish he was sent to Libya or Saudi Arabia and shot for his addiction, and drug trafficking.

By Kendricks on Sunday, October 12, 2003 - 01:51 pm:  Edit

Limbaugh isn't a thinker, he is a charicature. He is simply playing a role, and says things he knows will make his moronic dildoheads cream their pants.

I always suspected he couldn't really believe his own drivel. This latest revelation proves it.

By Kendricks on Sunday, October 12, 2003 - 01:55 pm:  Edit

A bit of irony: I heard recently that the type of pain meds old Limbaugh is hooked on can cause hearing loss. Looks like the hypocrite racist hatemonger drug addict brought his deafness on himself.

Rush is a big proponent of the war on drugs. So I have no problem at all with him getting caught up in his hypocrisy. I hope the feds nail that bastard.

By Gringasnomas on Sunday, October 12, 2003 - 10:05 pm:  Edit

I live near Rush. I've been in his house. I know the guy. He's a decent human being. His megaphone was largely responsible for the 'swinging of the pendulum' from far left to more centrist.

I know Rush, and you bastards are not worthy of the cyberdata it took to host the dribble you've written about this guy.

When ANY liberal (aka democrat) celeb or politician enters rehab, the mainstream media RUSHES to their defense, veritably cooing that "we wish him/her well in their battle". So I'm not surprised to read your venomous prose directed against the man.

Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh revolutionized the power of the radio waves. Isn't it interesting that both these media giants rose to fame during Clinton's tenure as the 'leader' of our country?

Feast on that you liberal, commie pinkos.

By Gcl on Sunday, October 12, 2003 - 11:01 pm:  Edit

Rush sure managed to ruffle the feathers of some folks who lack the ability to articulate a position without resorting to schoolyard name calling. You know who you are.

By Laguy on Sunday, October 12, 2003 - 11:54 pm:  Edit

Are we talking about the same Rush Limbaugh, or maybe there is a nice civil polite man with that name, who people sometimes confuse with the other Rush Limbaugh, the rude, meanspirited prick? According to one of his biographical sketches, "his references to Ted Kennedy invariably allude to alcohol use." God forbid that someone should allude to drug use when discussing Rush. More heinous, "during a segment on Bill Clinton's cat he mentioned that there was also a White House dog, then displayed a picture of Chelsea Clinton." A real gentleman. But I suppose Al Franken was totally out of line, a commie pinko, when he called Rush, the model of civility of good manners, a Big Fat SLOB. It is pathetic to admire Rush Limbaugh and then object sanctimoniously to anyone who would give him a taste of his own medicine, albeit not the illegal medicine that has made this self-professed law and order type the subject of a criminal investigation.
Given that this is a mongering board, I would be interested in Limbaugh's position on our "hobby." I suspect I know (but correct me if there is evidence to the contrary); it is similar to his position on illegal drugs. Those who partake should be thrown in jail with no questions asked, unless their name is Rush. Gringasnomas why don't you ask your good buddy about this?

By Aldaron on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 03:14 am:  Edit

This website is overwhelming liberal. Imagine that considering this "hobby".

Someone getting hooked on Oxycontin because they were taking it for some physical problem is different than someone abusing heroine. When someone alludes to "his drug use", it is like lumping him in with cocaine abusers, a drug of choice not prescribed by Doctors. I don't see the hypocracy. Oxycontin is very addictive. We can argue about politics all you want, but to me this doesn't belong in the political realm. I take no great joy in anyone going through physical pain in their life whether it is Rush Limbaugh, Bill Clinton, or that queer Al Franken.

By Gcl on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 06:44 am:  Edit

I think Rush's bits are funny. Still laughing at the Chelsea Clinton photo. For4 the record, I am not objecting sanctimoniously. I think Al Franken is funny too.

Lots of anger still out there. Perhaps this board is the cyber equivilent of primal scream therapy for some.

At one time cocaine was widely prescribed by physicians, and I believe it is still used in certain procedures. One of the most commonly abused drugs is Dilaudid, sold on the street and in your local drugstore by prescription.

By Ldvee on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 08:41 am:  Edit

"Someone getting hooked on Oxycontin because they were taking it for some physical problem is different than someone abusing heroin."

Not in Rush's case. He's a drug addict breaking laws buying large quantities of a narcotic in parking lots. He may have started taking it for physical pain but 1000s of people do and don't end up addicted and committing felonies. His doctor certainly didn't prescribe what he was doing. He's a junkie, plain and simple. No different than the bums in the park except he's rich.

By Ben on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 09:03 am:  Edit

Rush was right about one thing.

McNabb is not playing very well. He looked terrible in yesterdays game against Dallas.

By Bull_winkle on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 10:45 am:  Edit

Hush Limbaugh. Not just a good idea. Its a fact.

By Gringasnomas on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 11:34 am:  Edit

Leave it to Ben and BW to throw in their 2 cents worth. Those two yukleheads remind me of the two old muppets sitting up in the balcony & heckling. Don't contribute much but a good laugh.

Rush is an addict. How he became an addict makes no difference. The bleeding heart, mamsy-pamsey bullshit that "the doctor gave me this for pain" just doesn't sit well with me. The doctor didn't make you continue taking the stuff, or break the law doing street drugs.

Personal responsibility the issue. And Rush has called many irresponsible people down on the carpet over the years. He cannot afford to pull the Clinton spin over this. The mark of character is how one responds to adversity. Rush has character.

My guess is that once he rehabs and is sober, he won't softpeddle his addictions or actions. He'll fess up, face the music and move on. (Unlike so many other spineless liberals he's castigated for refusing to confront their mistakes)

Here's what I hope will happen:

30 day rehab (let's hope he makes it)

Face the music

Move on and become a spokesperson to fight prescription drug abuse.

Added to the fact that I know him, someone in my life has been battling prescription drugs for years. The battle is hard, and Rush will need all of his strength to overcome it. Good luck to ya buddy.

...then, as Andy Rooney puts it, we´re supposed to applaud him for no longer doing something he shouldn´t have been doing in the first place.

By Aldaron on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 02:08 pm:  Edit

I'm not making excuses for this guy. Once he is out of rehab, he will still be rich and I won't be, so it is hard to feel sorry for him. I don't know him and I've never even listened to his show. I wish him well though. I don't take joy in anyone else's suffering. I have to look myself in the mirror everyday and I'm not going to let biased political views make me spew hate for anyone.

Please... no more Andy Rooney quotes.

The best of Rush Limbaugh...

"One of the things I want to do before I die is conduct the Homeless
Olympics...[Events would include] the 10-meter Shopping Cart Relay,
the Dumpster Dig, and the Hop, Skip and Trip." (L.A. Times, 1/20/91)

On NAFTA: "If we are going to start rewarding no skills and stupid
people--I'm serious, let the unskilled jobs, let the kinds of jobs
that take absolutely no knowledge whatsoever to do--let stupid and
unskilled Mexicans do that work." (Radio show quoted in FRQ, Fall/93)

Speculating on why a Mexican national won the New York marathon: "An
immigration agent chased him for the last 10 miles." (USA Weekend,
1/26/92)

This is asinine! A Caesar Chavez Day in California? Wasn't he
convicted of a crime?" (Quoted in FRQ, Winter/94)

"Kurt Cobain was, ladies and gentleman, I just--he was a worthless
shred of human debris..." (TV show, 4/11/94)

"When a gay person turns his back on you, it is anything but an insult
; it's an invitation." (Quoted in FRQ, Summer/94)

"Feminism was established to allow unattractive women easier access to
the media." (Quoted in FRQ, Summer/93)

"Militant feminists are pro-choice because it's their ultimate avenue
of power over men.... It is their attempt to impose their will on the
rest of society, particularly on men." (Ought to Be, p.53)

"Why is it that whenever a corporation fires workers it is never
speculated that the workers might have deserved it?" (Ought to Be,
p.275)

Another Rush quote...

"There's a simple way to solve the crime problem: obey the law; punish those who do not."

By Aldaron on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 03:52 pm:  Edit

You missed one I do remember hearing played.... A few years back when one NOW President ran and beat the incubent, he proclaimed that he thought "she licked her."

None of this changes my mind that one should not take joy in another person's physical pain. If you want to argue against that, then feel free.

No mas for Aldaron

I've yet to see any valid reason why I should not take pleasure in Rush's troubles. I also took great pleasure in Princess Diana and the Hussein brothers being killed. Why shouldn't I experience joy wherever I may find it?

By Orgngrndr on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 04:53 pm:  Edit

Rush Limbaugh heartily deserves every critism leveled at him. And although I do not take any joy in his physical pain and discomfort, I am really happy over his embarassment and mental anguish due to his own hypocricy

If Bill Clinton will be labeled by all the "dittoheads" as a womanizer and liar, then tar Limbaugh with the same brush as a drug addict and liar!

Every stupid Limbaughism should be read and enjoyed for what they are, the ravings of a self-centered, drug addicted, meglomaniac. to wit:

When Bill Clinton sent in Troops to Bosnia in concert with the UN and to stop ethnic cleansing and with a clear exit strategy. Rush had this to say:

"Our armed forces shouldn't be over there - they're good at killing people and blowing things up, not peace-keeping.
--Rush Limbaugh on Clinton's deployment of troops to Bosnia.

Then of course theres the famous with half a brain quote:

With half my brain tied behind my back, just to make it fair!
--Rush Limbaugh

His policy towards sex education in schools is clear:

"Condoms only work during the school year."
--Rush Limbaugh

And of course his attitude towards women is also enlightening:

"I think this reason why girls don't do well on multiple choice tests goes all the way back to the Bible, all the way back to Genesis, Adam and Eve. God said, 'All right, Eve, multiple choice or multiple orgasms, what's it going to be?' We all know what was chosen" (TV, Feb. 23, 1994).

Of course he's alway's parroting the neo-conservative line:

"The only way to reduce the number of nuclear weapons is to use them."

And his grasp of ecology and math is also clear:

"There are more acres of forestland in America today than when Columbus discovered the continent in 1492"

And of course his brave stance for big business, big oil, and protesting is also clear:

"If they were for peace, they would give every dollar they raise to the U.S.defense department because it's the U.S. defense department that keeps the peace and liberates the oppressed in the world and gives them the opportunity to have freedom, which is what we want for Iraq. It's beyond me how anybody can look at these protesters and call them anything other than what they are: anti-American, anti-capitalist, pro Marxists and communists." - Rush Limbaugh

Boy, Ben, you got that right...

I had the misfortune of having the Eagles (at Pick'em rather than the 1.5 it went off at) and rooting for the Eagles while watching that game yesterday was akin to eating Wheaties with absinthe rather than milk...McNabb did absolutely nothing-- I mean, to be outplayed by Quincy Carter???...

McNabb has seriously regressed...I thought he was playing a a high level last year; that has all changed...

I had a pleasant thought on the way home. Maybe his drug addiction and alleged crimes will break the Terms and Conditions in current contracts, his sponsors will bail, and radio stations will tell him to get lost. Consequently the "silent majority" will go silent again and FOX news will go broke. Ah liberal dreams. That on top of the Gropenator, who is very socially liberal, being a Republican just makes me smile.

GCL the alacrity with which you embrace our man Rush is heartwarming. You should fill the void and host his show while Rush wets the bed with his cold sweats in a rehab center.

Tell us, do you have any media experience to offer?

By Ben on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 - 06:50 am:  Edit

YB,

I think McNabb might have some injuries as his quality of play has really dropped.

It is my understanding that Vince Carter is so committed to Purcell this year that he lives the lifestyle of a head coach and is either at practice, weight room or watching film 18 hours a day except for game days.
