A few Mongers visiting the shores of South Africa have asked me about the best places to try some local fare. South Africa has vastly diverse cultures and styles of food from the disgusting Mopani worm to the flavors of the French and Dutch settlers. We even have the nauseating McDonalds, but one of the styles that I truly enjoy and recommend is Cape Malay and on a resent trip to Cape Town I found an excellent up market Malay restaurant; The Cape Malay Restaurant at the Cellars its in the Cellars Hohenort Hotel Tel +2721 794 2137 email restaurant@cellars-hohenort.co.za. It’s not exactly cheap at ZAR200.00 for their set menu but well worth it.

Had a bit of a debate today with one of my favorite hombres about the "fish taco".
Not the first time I have encountered the "YUCK, REALLY?" argument, and I've never ultimately lost one yet after BRIBING the other side to TRY ONE?
Back me up here? Fish tacos, uhhm, really DON T SUCK?

There are few things better than a FRESH fish or shrimp taco from a stand in San Felipe... and few thing can be worse than a substandard fish taco.
It seems to be binary, either heavenly good or spit it out fast awful.
The fish MUST be fresh, of good quality, battered and freshly fried, NOT one from the already fried pile. My condiments of choice, cabbage, onion/cilantro mix, that mystery white stuff and some chipolte salsa.
yummy.![]()

Agreed. The good ones are great, the bad ones will leaving you curled on the floor. Consequently, I don't do fish tacos in Mexico. I'm fond of lobster tacos.

I tried to make fish tacos at a restaurant I worked at a few years ago here in N. WI. Made them authentic with cabbage, cilantro & onion, and salsa fresca. I kept on getting asked for cheese and tomatoes. Taco Bell's influence is everywhere.
