I am suprised no one has posted here with experience or questions. Just out of curiousity, are there any guys on this site who are currently teaching English abroad?

I am going to attend the TEFL class in Medellin in November. A better site for that type of info is Dave's ESL Cafe. Google it, there is a bunch of info.

I would also advise teachabroad.com. There are some good, paying opportunities for those who possess only a BA.

Maybe it was more time and place than anything (Korea/Japan 1996/1997) but English teachers weren't particularly respected. Seoul and Tokyo are very expensive cities and English teachers were viewed about the same as nannies - people who either didn't want a real job in their home countries or couldn't get a real job in their home countries. Most English teachers weren't young like most nannies, most were older and most were what I would classify as losers - no money, no goals. Most were just hanging out killing time, most had problems wherever they came from. Generally, the old adage "if you can't hack it in wherever, go to Japan and teach some rich kid English". Crappy apartments, no car, basically a few steps above being a bum.

Things may have changed but that was the general opinion of a lot of the expat community in Japan/Korea 10 years ago. That was also the opinion of a lot of the Koreans and Japanese whenever the subject came up.

That is probably still true in Asia, but I think it is a little better in Latin America. Pay is pretty good compared to other professions and it is a little more respectible.

But my view, who cares what people think? If you can live well, go for it.

I only want to work as a teacher is because I don't want to get bored of life.

Exactly. For those who have chosen a career in education, and have a BA or professional degree in education, you can find a nice paying job. Teaching English to non native speakers can be fun as hell, too.

Not to jump on a thread that's over a year old, but I'm a current TEFL teacher in Korea. I've been here a year and enjoying it. The pay now--going into my second year with a raise--is about what I was making at my last job in the States. I definitely recommend it to somebody who want's to have a non-mongering adventure--or at least an adventure where the main goal is not mongering. I'll echo Sniper and say that Dave's ESL (eslcafe.com) is one of the best all-in-one resources on the web.

I do know someone who has just done this, and now teaches in Pattaya, he has just got married to a woman who lives near Pattaya.

so your saying that you cannot monger and teach at the same time?

No you cannot. I taught in Thailand for a short time. You could blow a whole paycheck in a few days, easily in BKK or Pattaya. A wise man might just get a steady girlfriend to take care of his needs. It might be cheaper financially, but taxing emotionally and mentally.

I agree with you, you don't get much money for teaching, well not a western pay check.I could blow a couple of thousand dollars on a two week vocation in Thailand.
