I wanted to start a thread about my favorite topic, so here we go. My experience in the area is 20 years of volunteer work with the Red Cross, including on-site with teams helping victims of natrual disasters, such as Landers, Northridge and Katrina. My specific interest is preparing for earthquakes, the big one as some call it, given that I live on the West Coast. What people have planned, and what they have actually done, regarding preparations for such a huge event that knocks out roads, power, sewer, supply lines for food, fuel and law enforcement is always interesting for me. I have seen people from all spectrums prepare, and others not, both being slammed by a catastrophic event. What happens after the event is directly proportional to the preparations made before the event. Planning only does nothing on the day of.
I have seen threads begun only to falter, to the best way to give this one it's best chance at life is to throw some questions your way to get your responses.
1) What specific preparations have you planned for your home and family regarding being without food, water, power and shelter for 72 hours?
2) Same as (1) but what have you actually done and put into practice?
3) If you live in the city, are your plans to stay there or get out to a location away from the city?
4) If you live away from the city, are your plans to rely on what you have stored or will you use land to grow food?
5) If you have land away from the city and have plans to go there after an event, how will you produce food, electricity, fresh water and other basic needs, to avoid turning back into nomads?
Answer any or all!

If I am without power for 72 hours I doubt I'd be able to grow a whole lot of food in that time.
You must be with FEMA .

I was in northern Thailand when the tsunami hit. It really did not affect me but I fucked a few Thai chicks and they were bad sessions at that time. Obviously I was poorly prepared. In the future I have spent a little more time preplanning what I will fuck in the event of a variety of major disasters.

El_apodo: I guess you don't keep up on recent posts. I joined CH in 2001 under a different name that the system wouldn't let me use again.
Khun_mor: I like some of FEMA's home courses, but their systems are not in the interests of freedom or survival, so I am not associated with them.
I_am_sancho: Cute. Although, Chang Mai is a nice change of pace after dealing with a flooded Bangkok for two weeks.
Is sarcasm the limit of intelligence and experience of other CH members related to preparedness? Or do you all just think 'it will never happen' or worse 'the government and Red Cross will handle it within 72 hours'?
I'm not going to babysit you guys, you either have an interest or you don't. I can accept those positions as yours, I was just hoping for more wisdom on your parts, given your financial and political threads on the site.

Survivalists can sometimes be amusing to listen to, but seeing as the only thing to do with surviving on this board is how to better survive without some strange while between trips, probably none of us care about your safe room of shotguns and canned food you have out in the woods somewhere.

Please tell us in an emergency your recommendations for:
condums
viagra,
penecilian
vibrator batteries
How big does our supply need to be, and can these items be used to trade for services in a time of natural disasters.
How long should we plan to operate without new supplies?
Will FEMA be providing this to victums after a natural disaster?

The monger mentality is far from being prepared for a natural disaster. We are the bad boys, the risk takers, and adrenaline junkies. If something goes down we will improvise, adapt and survive. No need for a checklist and a cave. If it gets to that point just pull out the morphine injector and fade away with some dignity. Of course, rub one out first.

I feel as I'm a pro when it comes to survivial because I have watched Man vs Wild for almost 2 years now. If disaster hits, I will just ask myself 1 important question, "What would Bear Grills do?"

Stick to whoredom, guys. On this issue, you are clueless and largely kool-aid drinkers. End of thread.
By Khun_mor on Sunday, July 27, 2008 - 03:33 pm: Edit |
Grow up Fcbkpr . You post a thread about earthquake preparedness on a site devoted to sex around the world then go home crying when no one wants a serious discussion.
WTF did you expect ??
We will stick to whoredom thanks .
Tomegun
How can you be a pro on survival when you cannot even spell it - or spell Bear Grylls for that matter ??

Tomegun:
You need to be more serious. Without condums you might have to pay child support, or the girls might not have sex.
You need to get your priorities straight.

I agree with SFHombre....WTF?
Dude, half the guys here are going bareback with hookers! You think preparedness and survival are high on their agendas?
I'm sure there must be a web community somewhere where guys chat excitedly about their favorite brands of canned meats ("Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam...") and the best emergency human waste management systems.
This ain't it.

MajorMajor,
You're right. What was I thinking? Not only do I get mongering advice from this board, I get life lessions! It's like a buy one take one special in the Philippines! I do need to get my priorities straight!
By Explorer8939 on Sunday, July 27, 2008 - 05:51 pm: Edit |
Seriously, I maintain a stash of emergency supplies in the house, in a location that might survive an earthquake: a few gallons of water, candles, matches. I don't really expect an earthquake, but its possible that the electricity may go out for a day or two.
I rotate the water and other quasi-perishables on the anniversary of Katrina, that always reminds me.
By Majormajor on Monday, July 28, 2008 - 08:28 am: Edit |
Tomegun:
Why are you worried about the Big One on the San Andrais Fault.
You need to worry more about getting mugged while you are overseas buddy.
Have fun in the Phillippines and chill out.

I think it would be a better discussion on what to do in a foriegn country if a disaster strikes. I know I am kind of at a loss if things go tits up and I am in a strange country with limited cash, no family/relatives to count on, and may have zero language skills. I guess finding a consulate would be high on priority , but should it be?
As far as your original question, it depends on how serious of an issue. If it's a something like an earthquake I may stay put. If its a Russian nuclear 1st strike and I miraculously survive, I may plan on heading south where the weather is warmer cause I doubt the powerlines will be fixed in a week.

Maybe we should take this a little more seriously, guys.

With today's earthquake I guess all the Fruits and Nuts out in Hollyweird had a chance to practice their
Disaster and Emergency Preparedness and Preparation.
Being a SoCal guy myself I am allowed the privelege of calling them that......the outsiders are not-lol
