PHILADELPHIA (CNN) – Sarah Palin partook in an established political ritual on Saturday night when she headed to Tony Luke's in south Philadelphia to order a pair of cheesesteaks with whiz and onions.
But as the kitchen sizzled and orders were barked out, Palin found herself talking politics, calling McCain's debate performance "awesome" and taking questions from a voter about the hunt for terrorists in Pakistan.
While waiting in line with her daughter Willow to place her order, a reporter asked Palin if she watched Friday's debate, and what her impressions were.
"I did, I did," she said. "McCain did awesome. He was great. He was absolutely on his game."
Palin added that she is ready to debate Joe Biden next Thursday in St. Louis.
"I am," she said. "Look forward to it. Look forward to getting to speak to Americans through that debate, absolutely."
The governor got a more serious interrogation moments later when Temple graduate student Michael Rovito approached her to inquire about Pakistan.
"How about the Pakistan situation?," asked Rovito, who said he was not a Palin supporter. "What's your thoughts about that?"
"In Pakistan?," she asked, looking surprised.
"What's going on over there, like Waziristan?"
"It's working with [Pakistani president] Zardari to make sure that we're all working together to stop the guys from coming in over the border," she told him. "And we'll go from there."
Rovito wasn't finished. "Waziristan is blowing up!," he said.
"Yeah it is," Palin said, "and the economy there is blowing up too."
"So we do cross border, like from Afghanistan to Pakistan you think?," Rovito asked.
"If that's what we have to do stop the terrorists from coming any further in, absolutely, we should," Palin responded, before moving on to greet other voters.
Palin ordered the two sandwiches, but the managers refused to let her pay, so she slipped a bill into their tip jar. She did not chow down at the restaurant, opting instead to take the food with her in the motorcade.

(CNN) – The United States should not second guess actions Israel takes in the name of security, Sarah Palin seemed to suggest in a Thursday interview.
The Republican VP nominee recently said that she would never "second guess Israel if that country decided to attack Iran." Speaking with Katie Couric of CBS News, she stood by that quote.
“We shouldn't second guess Israel's security efforts because we cannot ever afford to send a message that we would allow a second Holocaust, for one,” she said. “Israel has got to have the opportunity and the ability to protect itself. They are our closest ally in the Mideast. We need them. They need us. And we shouldn't second guess their efforts.”
The Alaska governor said the United States should be free to relay its rights our concerns, but “we don't have to second-guess what their efforts would be if they believe … that it is in their country and their allies, including us, all of our best interests to fight against a regime, especially Iran, who would seek to wipe them off the face of the earth,” said Palin. “It is obvious to me who the good guys are in this one and who the bad guys are.”
Palin spent the week meeting with foreign leaders in New York.

Sarah Palin defended the claim that Alaska’s proximity with Russia helps bolster her foreign policy resume in an interview released Thursday.
The Republican VP nominee, asked by CBS’s Katie Couric what she meant by that statement said: “That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land — boundary that we have with — Canada.
“…our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They're in the state that I am the executive of,” said Palin.
The Alaska governor, asked if she had ever engaged in negotiations with Russia, said the country had swapped trade missions with her state. “It's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border,” she said.
“It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to our state."
Palin has spent the week meeting with foreign leaders in New York, as she seeks to boost her national security and foreign policy credentials.

NEW YORK (CNN) — Sarah Palin took questions from her traveling press corps Thursday for the first time since being tapped as John McCain's running mate.

Speaking to a small pool of reporters following a visit to Ground Zero in lower Manhattan, Palin made a statement and then answered four questions, addressing the war on terror, the re-election bids of Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young, and the bailout legislation currently in front of Congress.

PALIN: Every American student needs to come through this area so that, especially this younger generation of Americans is, to be in a position of never forgetting what happened here and never repeating, never allowing a repeat of what happened here. I wish every American would come through here. I wish every world leader would come through here, and understand what it is that took place here and more importantly how America came together and united to commit to never allowing this to happen again. And just to hear and from and see these good New Yorkers who are rebuilding not just this are but helping to rebuild America has been very, very inspiring and encouraging. CNN: On the topic of never letting this happen again, do you agree with the way the Bush administration has handled the war on terrorism, is there anything you would do differently?
A: I agree with the Bush administration that we take the fight to them. We never again let them come onto our soil and try to destroy not only our democracy, but communities like the community of New York. Never again. So yes, I do agree with taking the fight to the terrorists and stopping them over there.
POLITICO: Do you think our presence in Iraq and afghan and our continued presence there is inflaming islamic extremists?
A: I think our presence in Iraq and Afghanistan will lead to further security of our nation, again, because the mission is to take the fight over there. do not let them come over here and attempt again what they accomplished here, and that was some destruction. terrible destruction on that day. but since September 11, Americans uniting and rebuilding and committing to never letting that happen again.
POLITICO: Do you support the reelection bids of embattled Alaska Republicans, Rep. Don Young and Sen. Ted Stevens?
A: Ted Stevens trial started a couple days ago. We’ll see where that goes.

John McCain’s public position on the state of the nation’s economy has shifted since his early optimism of last week, as the Republican nominee maintains that the country faces its worst economic crisis since World War II.
In a rare television interview, Sarah Palin went a bit further: asked another Great Depression looms if a bailout plan is not approved quickly, Palin told CBS’s Katie Couric: "Unfortunately, that is the road that America may find itself on."

McCain later told Couric that although he believes conditions are dire in the nation’s financial markets, he’s not sure "if exactly a depression" would happen. "I don't think we need to scare people, but I do think we need to tell people the truth," he said.
Palin pointed to John McCain’s warnings about the state of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac two years ago. She could not point to other instances where he had pushed for stricter oversight. “But can you give me any other concrete examples? Because I know you've said Barack Obama is a lot of talk and no action. Can you give me any other examples in his 26 years of John McCain truly taking a stand on this?” asked Couric.
Palin replied. “I can give you examples of things that John McCain has done, that has shown his foresight, his pragmatism, and his leadership abilities. And that is what America needs today.” Pressed for more specific examples, Palin responded: “I'll try to find you some and I'll bring them to you.”
The interview took place before McCain’s campaign told CNN that the Arizona senator was looking to move the date of the first presidential debate to October 2 – currently slated as the day Palin would face off with Democratic VP nominee Joe Biden.

McCain retracts Palin's Pakistan comments
Sen. John McCain retracted Sarah Palin's stance on Pakistan Sunday morning, after the Alaska governor appeared to back Sen. Barack Obama's support for unilateral strikes inside Pakistan against terrorists
"She would not…she understands and has stated repeatedly that we're not going to do anything except in America's national security interest," McCain told ABC's George Stephanopoulos of Palin. "In all due respect, people going around and… sticking a microphone while conversations are being held, and then all of a sudden that's—that's a person's position… This is a free country, but I don't think most Americans think that that's a definitve policy statement made by Governor Palin."
Saturday night, while on a stop for cheesesteaks in South Philadelphia, Palin was questioned by a Temple graduate student about whether the U.S. should cross the border from Afghanistan into Pakistan.
"If that's what we have to do stop the terrorists from coming any further in, absolutely, we should," Palin said.
During Friday night's presidential debate in Mississippi, Obama took a similar stance and condemned the Bush administration for failing to act on the possibility terrorists are in Pakistan.
"Nobody talked about attacking Pakistan," Obama said after McCain accused the Illinois senator of wanting to announce an invasion. "If the United States has al Qaeda, bin Laden, top-level lieutenants in our sights, and Pakistan is unable or unwilling to act, then we should take them out."
McCain emphasized Sunday, Palin "shares" his view on the matter.

Probably the most concise piece I've seen yet on why Palin reflects so poorly on McCain's judgment, from that ultra-left magazine--Newsweek:

Will someone please put Sarah Palin out of her agony? Is it too much to ask that she come to realize that she wants, in that wonderful phrase in American politics, "to spend more time with her family"? Having stayed in purdah for weeks, she finally agreed to a third interview. CBS's Katie Couric questioned her in her trademark sympathetic style. It didn't help. When asked how living in the state closest to Russia gave her foreign-policy experience, Palin responded thus:
"It's very important when you consider even national-security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America. Where--where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. There is, of course, the sheer absurdity of the premise. Two weeks ago I flew to Tokyo, crossing over the North Pole. Does that make me an expert on Santa Claus? (Thanks, Jon Stewart.) But even beyond that, read the rest of her response. "It is from Alaska that we send out those ..." What does this mean? This is not an isolated example. Palin has been given a set of talking points by campaign advisers, simple ideological mantras that she repeats and repeats as long as she can. ("We mustn't blink.") But if forced off those rehearsed lines, what she has to say is often, quite frankly, gibberish.
Couric asked her a smart question about the proposed $700 billion bailout of the American financial sector. It was designed to see if Palin understood that the problem in this crisis is that credit and liquidity in the financial system has dried up, and that that's why, in the estimation of Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson and Fed chairman Ben Bernanke, the government needs to step in to buy up Wall Street's most toxic liabilities. Here's the entire exchange:
COURIC: Why isn't it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families who are struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries; allow them to spend more and put more money into the economy instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?
PALIN: That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health-care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping the--it's got to be all about job creation, too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So health-care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans. And trade, we've got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive, scary thing. But one in five jobs being created in the trade sector today, we've got to look at that as more opportunity. All those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that.
This is nonsense--a vapid emptying out of every catchphrase about economics that came into her head. Some commentators, like CNN's Campbell Brown, have argued that it's sexist to keep Sarah Palin under wraps, as if she were a delicate flower who might wilt under the bright lights of the modern media. But the more Palin talks, the more we see that it may not be sexism but common sense that's causing the McCain campaign to treat her like a time bomb.
Can we now admit the obvious? Sarah Palin is utterly unqualified to be vice president. She is a feisty, charismatic politician who has done some good things in Alaska. But she has never spent a day thinking about any important national or international issue, and this is a hell of a time to start. The next administration is going to face a set of challenges unlike any in recent memory. There is an ongoing military operation in Iraq that still costs $10 billion a month, a war against the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan that is not going well and is not easily fixed. Iran, Russia and Venezuela present tough strategic challenges.
Domestically, the bailout and reform of the financial industry will take years and hundreds of billions of dollars. Health-care costs, unless curtailed, will bankrupt the federal government. Social Security, immigration, collapsing infrastructure and education are all going to get much worse if they are not handled soon.
And the American government is stretched to the limit. Between the Bush tax cuts, homeland-security needs, Iraq, Afghanistan and the bailout, the budget is looking bleak. Plus, within a few years, the retirement of the baby boomers begins with its massive and rising costs (in the trillions).
Obviously these are very serious challenges and constraints. In these times, for John McCain to have chosen this person to be his running mate is fundamentally irresponsible. McCain says that he always puts country first. In this important case, it is simply not true.

However, some of you are incapable of doing that though ... at least when they have a R behind their names. The D's fuckups conspicuously go unnoticed. Some of you have been at this for years. It's pathetic.
Obama is really going to be able to reach across the aisle and work with Republicans.
It looks like he doesn't even have influence on the Black Caucus who the majority voted against the Bailout plan.

You're right in that it's wrong to be comparing slips of tongue with stupidity. On the other hand, Palin's comments show a truly frightening ignorance of virtually all areas of domestic and foreign policy. And no one can claim she's exhausted from a brutal campaign schedule. Several reports have noted she's done less campaigning than any VP candidate in recorded history. She's been isolated from the press and largely from the public. She does one event a day on average, and only gives prepared remarks, taking questions from neither the press nor the public. She hasn't even done a fundraiser in a week because McCain's people don't want her interacting with the donors. This is utterly amazing. But not surprising given her performances with Gibson and Couric.
In this YouTube era, all people want to talk about are the things that don't matter: who made a misstatement or slip of the tongue. What matters is whether, at the end of the day, the candidates can carry out the jobs they are running for. Palin has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt she can not. She's unfit to be VP, She's unfit to be a heartbeat away from the Oval Office. Even many stalwart Republicans are now recognizing this, and some are calling for her to step down.

The majority of Obama's party supported the plan. The Republicans failed to deliver the 80 votes they said they would have. McCain, and not Obama, went to the media before the vote talking about how he'd delivered.

You miss the point. The Democrats are the majority party. The democrats didn't need a single Republican vote to pass this bill.
Both McCain and Obama have really done as little as possible to address this problem. They both want to distance themselves from the bill if it does pass and then becomes a failure. If it succeeds they both will say it is because of their behind closed doors work was the reason for the success. Politics as usual!
Even Bill Clinton says the Democrats over the years have resisted the need the regulate Freddie and Fannie.

What happen is that the Democrats pandering for the black vote and those who could not obtain home loans under the standard credit criteria of sound lending practices intimidated and threaten banking institutions in to making sub-prime loans under the threat cutting off low interest money to these same institutions.
Basically affirmative lending (like affirmative action) to unqualified people so the Democratic party falsely tell the unqualified that they were entitled to rewards in life that those who earned and qualified for home loans.
The Republicans spoke out, but they didn't speak loud enough or long enough or just didn't want to because they too were benefiting from the false economy booming from all of this debt that a big majority of it would never be paid back because of the sub-standard lending practices.
The American people are guilty too because even people who could qualify comfortably at a lower loan amount.....were greedy and over extended themselves with sub-prime loans when they could have qualified comfortably with a lower loan amount on documented, conventional loan.
This is greed from the top..... down and from the bottom.....up. Everybody either is or knows someone who overextended by either purchasing or refinancing a loan well outside the conservative guidelines of their own budget and debt to income.

You obviously have zero understanding of the politics around this bailout. Yes, if every Dem voted for it, it would pass. And the Repubs would politicize the issue and accuse the Dems of handouts, corporate welfare, saddling Joe Six-Pack with debt, etc. So, the entire reason--let me repeat--the entire reason Bush and the leadership of both parties spent several days meeting and working out a compromise, was to get something that could be passed in a bipartisan fashion, so politicizing recriminations could be avoided.
The Repubs failed. The leadership on their side miscalculated their desire to play politics with the nation's economy.
Now, you want to blame the issuance of bad mortgages on the Dems? I thought you were in real estate? Politicians don't offer mortgages...banks and financial institutions do. This situation has nothing to do with the politics of race, and if you believe that, you're spending to much time in Rush''s dittohead parallel universe, or taking bad drugs. It's about greed and stupidity. Greed on the part of lenders; stupidity on the part of borrowers. And also on the willful negligence of all the politicians. All of them. And please note also that most people foreclosing are not blacks. So please take your race-baiting right wing propaganda and place it where the moon don't shine.
You're right about one thing. Both Obama and McCain stayed away from the action on this one. The difference is that when it looked like it would pass, McCain tried to take credit. Obama didn't. So which of the two is a puffed-up egomaniacal loser?

Even the New York Times back in 1999 when they where somewhat fair and objective they saw that the democrats where pushing government socialism on banks to make sub-prime loans to unqualified borrowers. Politicians, Democrats (ACORN) intimidated and threatened banking institutions if they didn't make sub-prime loans that they would not lend the banks low interest money.
Fannie Mae, the nation's biggest underwriter of home mortgages, has been under increasing pressure from the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans among low and moderate income people and felt pressure from stock holders to maintain its phenomenal growth in profits.
''Fannie Mae has expanded home ownership for millions of families in the 1990's by reducing down payment requirements,'' said Franklin D. Raines, Fannie Mae's chairman and chief executive officer. ''Yet there remain too many borrowers whose credit is just a notch below what our underwriting has required who have been relegated to paying significantly higher mortgage rates in the so-called subprime market.''
Demographic information on these borrowers is sketchy. But at least one study indicates that 18 percent of the loans in the subprime market went to black borrowers, compared to 5 per cent of loans in the conventional loan market.
Fannie Mae officials stress that the new mortgages will be extended to all potential borrowers who can qualify for a mortgage. But they add that the move is intended in part to increase the number of minority and low income home owners who tend to have worse credit ratings than non-Hispanic whites.
These borrowers whose incomes, credit ratings and savings are not good enough to qualify for conventional loans, can only get loans from finance companies that charge much higher interest rates -- anywhere from three to four percentage points higher than conventional loans.

I thought the Democrats when they rode into power in 2006 where going to end the unethical politics and work for the people.
Your point that it is not blacks that most homes are not being foreclosed on may or may not be true. The point is that the sub-prime mortgages that where push upon banking institutions to make loans to minority people who had credit problems and little or no money down. The New York Times points this out not me. The fact is that these sub- prime loans where now available to everyone up the chain Black, White Hispanic, Asian,etc. and where abused by people of all credit and income ranges.
Fannie and Freddie were basically mandated that they had to buy these loans from banking institutions by the Democrats and the Clinton Administration.

I believe neither McCain or Obama showed real leadership on this issue.
Obama is going to have a tough time pushing his programs if he is elected. The 5% of Americans he proposes that are going to pay enough taxes so the other 95% get a tax break are now going to be a lot less richer to tax. People like myself will start investing overseas even 10-20 percent of my portfolio. Many people alot smarter than myself will go to huge extremes to shelter money overseas and pay no tax at all.
How anyone can honestly believe that Obama is going to give tax breaks to 95 percent of Americans are in as much of denial as everyone claims this financial crisis took everyone by surprise.
I blame the Republicans and Democrats equally for the state of our nation. And as much as everyone claims our constitution has been abused. The media has fail to be the watchdog of government and have become an extension of the Democratic and Republican parties.
There is no honor to do the right thing anymore ....it is all about money and the need to be right even if it is wrong for our country.

I agree with almost everything you say. I am very disappointed with Obama that he did not show more leadership during this economic crisis. To me, he seemed more like an observer.
However I place the blame for all of this at the feet of the Republicans. Rolling into 2000, the country had a record surplus, and now it is a record deficit. Spending has gotten out of control that it is unfathomable. The Republicans have spent and borrowed the country into this mess. The entire attitude of spending what we can afford was thrown out during Bush's first 6 years as president.
There is good chance we would not have gone into the costly Iraq war if we had been more interested in economics than chest thumping.

The problem with having either presidential candidate "show leadership" during the present economic crisis is that pretty much by definition that injects partisan politics into the search for a solution. Indeed, many thought McCain's efforts to increase his profile in the negotiations may have hurt the efforts to reach a bipartisan solution.
Although one could debate back and forth whether McCain's high profile presence in Washington helped or hurt the negotiating process, the concern about having presidential candidates mucking around in very sensitive and intensive negotiations is a legitimate concern.
I thought Obama played it right. There is not that much he can do as a Presidential candidate to solve the problem, and there was (and is) a substantial risk that over involvement could hurt rather than help resolve the problem. After he becomes President all that changes, and one would expect him to use the power of the Presidency to help solve the mess Bush and his friends got us into.

Your account of the subprime situation is pure fiction. I've seen it described in a few different ways, but never as a conspiracy by Dems to make sure that poor people could buy homes they can't afford.
This was about greed. And it was about legislators in both parties who are in the pocket of the financial sector. The partisan part of this is Bush and his boys were warned to step in early and regulate, and they didn't. Almost all of these loans that are being foreclosed are 3-6 years old (and consequently are adjusting because they were mostly ARMs)...i.e., made during the Bush years. His people were warned but they failed to act.
My observation of Obama to date is that when confronted with a crisis, he waits to see what everyone else does, then he waits and sees how everyone reacts, then he takes the position that under his plan everything would instead be wonderful and flowers would grow out of everyone's ass and birds would sing and gas would be $2 a gallon but no one would even use gas anymore and everyone would get a 20% raise and all kinds of cool stuff would be free and far more than I could ever even imagine if only we had followed Obama's plan instead. I've never figured out what the plan actually is, but it sure sounds wonderful.
As for Freddi and Frannie? There is not a politician in Washington, Republican or Democrat, who does not have blood on their hands.
As for Palin. I have previously put forth the hypothesis that due to a strict religious upbringing, and further demonstrated by her opposition to sex education as a politician. She was probably never instructed by her mother in the necessity or techniques of vaginal hygiene and further more was told that area was "bad" and she should avoid touching it. Therefore it is likely her pussy stinks. Obviously this is far more relevant than anything else. I cant believe the Democrats are perusing all these silly ideological arguments and completely overlooking an absolute core issue with half the voters in America. Men will not tolerate stink pussy.

Not every Republican feels she came through her interviews with Charlie Gibson on ABC and Katie Couric on CBS with her reputation enhanced. Her "I can see Russia from my house in Alaska" foreign policy has been lampooned more times than can be counted, and the dead-on, viciously effective impersonations of her by Tina Fey are among the most popular YouTube spoofs in recent memory. The ferociousness of the attacks and the disdain for her record have not been inflicted on any running mate since, well, the above-referenced Quayle. And Quayle had served 12 years in Congress by the time he was named to the ticket. You can almost envision Biden saying to Palin on Thursday, "I knew Dan Quayle. I served with Dan Quayle. And you're no Dan Quayle."

I guess what will make the debate tomorrow suspenseful is that indeed if there is any Democrat who would say in the middle of a debate with Palin "I knew Dan Quayle. I served with Dan Quayle. And you're no Dan Quayle," it would have to be Joe Biden. I just hope Palin's gaffes outshine any that Biden may bring to the table.
Biden does have a lot of experience in that area, doesn't he.

It will also be very interesting to see the interactions between Gwen Ifill and Palin, particularly given both that Gwen Ifill doesn't exactly have a poker face and also has been attacked by the Republicans in the last day or so as having a conflict of interest (because she is set to release a book she wrote on black politicians, including Obama, and an Obama victory presumably would enhance the sales of her book). I guess if all else fails, the repubs will claim the moderator was not objective and therefore Palin was at a disadvantage. This notwithstanding that it is all but certain the McCain camp knew about Ifill's book when they agreed to have her as a moderator.
OTOH, it is difficult to imagine they could find an objective moderator who wouldn't think Palin is a friggin' moron. I suppose the trick is for the moderator not to show it. And from the Democratic perspective, it is important that Biden not show it (we reserve the right though to imagine Gore's sighs every time Palin says something really stupid).
Like I've said, the problem tonight is that everyone expects Palin to royally fuck up and look stupid. That's the bar. If she keeps it together and makes it through in one piece, Republicans will say she won. Democrats, it doesn't matter what we think, it's all about the independents. Right now, polls show a majority of them think she's a moron as well.
For Biden, he just needs to keep it muzzled and sit back. It's his to lose, as long as he doesn't, then Democrats and most independents will say he won.
Hopefully, tonight the voters viewing the debate will be smarter than the press, and will use the appropriate standard: of these two, which could I see serving as President of the US should the situation arise where the President is incapacitated and/or dies? Which can manage our foreign relations and provide leadership on domestic and economic policy?
To be honest, I don't feel that a brief debate sheds much light on such large questions. The debates are largely theater, unless very well managed. If I look at their records, their experience, and their public statements on issues, this one is no contest.
In the end I don't give a rats ass about the debate tonight. Palin was and remains a horrible choice for VP. She may be feisty, spunky, and all that, but she is completely unprepared for the presidency, and that's really the only criterion one should be using to judge VP candidates. Can they step in and handle the job as President. Given the challenges that will face the winner of this election, we'd better be certain the team is up to the task. Setting aside any questions of Obama vs McCain, I can't find any way to reach the conclusion that Palin is fit to serve.
But the media and most of the public prefers to view this as a horse race, or a beauty pageant.

Errors Prompt Sarah Palin Downgrade from Vista to XP
Sources in the GOP have confirmed that, following a series of increasingly disastrous interviews, they are uninstalling Vista from vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and 'upgrading' to Windows XP.
"Palin is a next-generation model," said Brad Forman, associate editor at CNET.com. "She represented a novel platform for most Republicans, with all the bells and whistles they could load into her hard drive. However, the system just isn't stable enough for everyday campaigning."
The move is seen as a blow for Microsoft, which has had trouble convincing customers to upgrade from the widespread and relatively stable Windows XP. Palin ran afoul of compatability problems almost from day one of her candidacy.
"They were able to run 'Spunky Frontier Maverick 1.8' pretty well at the convention, but that's basically a simple text editor, the one they use for Tele-Prompters and whatnot," said Forman. "The Republicans ran into trouble when they tried to upload Economic Terminology 2.0. They were able to patch that by disconnecting her from most external media, but the recent economic crisis required Economic Terminology 3.1 at the very least. And they just couldn't get Foreign Policy 8.0 to work at all. It gave them nothing but 'Blue Screens of Death' over and over. You just can't function like that in a working environment."
The move to XP is seen as a sensible one, but significantly overdue.
"The damage is done," said Washington Post analyst Thomas Greene. "That system error in the Katie Couric interview last week was inexcusable. If they had properly vetted Palin before selection, they would have had time to debug her before rolling her out. I don't even think they ran Family Tree 1.2 on Palin at all until the week of the convention. I'm almost afraid to ask what else they didn't check."
Analysts expect the system downgrade to take the better part of a week, during which time the Obama/Biden campaign will likely take advantage of Palin's technical problems with a new advertising campaign.
"There is a chance that Sarah Palin running on XP will not be as exciting," said Democratic strategic Marlie Henshaw. "We're hoping that voters get a chance to see behind the glitz and the advertising to the real software running underneath. I think they'll find Palin XP is less of a step forward than Vista Palin, and her novelty has been one of her selling points. So that might help us a bit."
The move comes at a critical time as Palin prepares to square off against the Democratic VP candidate Joe Biden in their first televised debate this week.
"Now, Biden's had plenty of technical issues himself," said Forman. "He's running on Windows 98, which really can't run all the programs that the Obama campaign would like; but that was never really feasible, as Obama's running on a Mac. However, technicians have had a really hard time trying to uninstall GaffeMaker from Biden. It's freeware he downloaded from his AOL account a long time ago, and it's incredibly stubborn."
Despite Biden's problems, observers suspect that Palin will still be at a disadvantage despite reconfiguring her software.
"Windows XP is solid, but not that inspiring," said Greene. "It's a safe choice. But what Palin brought to the ticket was an air of fresh promise and independence, an exciting connection to the future. If she loses the futuristic aura that Vista gave her, what do they have left?"
"I'm not even sure McCain is plugged in," added Forman.

She is doing fine. Enough words to fool most people, but what she says doesn't really have much meaning. She rambles a lot and doesn't really say anything. At the end of the day she probably helped herself and McCain though given her previous disastrous interviews.

I thought she vacillated between a "Stepford Candidate" who said the same thing over and over again, regardless of its relevance to the question, her "deer in the headlights" look when asked something she didn't have a clue how to answer, and a relatively clueless person who tried to string a bunch of words that almost sounded intelligible on first hearing, but as you thought about it you realized they made almost no sense. It was like a parody of a high school student trying to debate on a topic she had prepared for.

For me, the moment of the debate for her was the central point on the war on terror location.
I believe she quoted Petraeus and the "leader of Al Qaida" as saying that Iraq was the central front on the war on terror. Maybe it is just me, but one has credibility, one does not. Maybe I don't understand the nuisanced politics behind that coached remark, but I don't think it is credible to quote the enemy about the location of the central front on the war on terror.

All she had to do was look cool and talk fast to achieve her best case scenario and she did that - substance hardly matters. Best case scenario was to stem the hemorrhaging for this instant. That done the bleeding starts again as presumably she hits the trail for the last month and is subject to critical inquiry. Where is Sam Donaldson when you need him? If I were McCain I would put her back in the bag now and put the bag in the frig until election day - this will be her high point.
Incredible that the moderator repeatedly let her get away with totally avoiding the question asked and turning back to "let me talk about energy" over and over. The moderator should have made sure the format was followed and should have cut her off immediately, steering her back to the question on the table.
Both PBS moderators have been worthless. Might as well have been Sean Hannity in that seat.
I think Lehrer did a much better job than the lady tonight. His questions were tougher and better thought out. Plus he made it evident when neither candidate answer his questions.
I was disappointed in Biden. The difference between the two is so stark, that he could have pressed Palin harder. For example, on foreign policy, he could hsve said:
All due respect to Gov Palin, but getting a passport one year ago, and sharing a border with a foreign country does not make you an expert on foreign policy. In contrast, I have been traveling the globe ..... etc.
Palin also pulled out the Republican style attacks that Obama did support funding for the troops (by the same criterion McCain did not either), or that Obama wants to raise taxes. I do not like this, but once it was clear that she was going to do that. He should have had a few cards in response that are hard hitting and devoid of facts.
I would have also belted her on McCain and the economy. Let's remember that less than a month ago, McCain stated the fundamentals of the economy were strong. A year ago, he said that economics were not his strong suit. Are we supposed to believe that suddenly he is an authority?
Overall, I think that Biden won the debate but expectations were so low on Palin that he had to do more than just win.
Loved the comparison with Vista. The one distinction is that Microsoft is ramming Vista down our throats whereas we have a choice on VP's. In fact, I am not sure it is even possible to purchase a PC with XP anymore.

Biden could have been harder on Palin, but everyone advising him told him not to go after her, but to go after McCain. He had everything to lose by aggressively pushing her. I think that was the right strategy.
I thought Biden did nail McCain on the economy. He directly addressed McCain's flip-flopping over the past two weeks, and McCain's apparent disinterest in economic issues during the early months of this meltdown. On those points I thought Biden cleaned her clock.
It was appalling that the moderator let her get away with avoiding the questions asked. After the first time or two she did that the moderator really should have interrupted her and asked her to speak to the question asked rather than give a speech on a prepared topic.

Last night she said, "Let's commit ourselves just everyday American people, Joe Six-Pack, hockey moms across the nation," when asked a question about the mortgage crisis.

What else did she have to say about the mortgage crisis? Not much. She blamed it on "predator [sic] lenders." How to fix it? She refused to answer, and spouted some platitudes about fighting for Joe Six-Pack.
When she was asked about the bailout plan, she spoke for about 20 seconds before saying "I want to go back to the energy plan."
When asked about mounting bankruptcies and what she and McCain will do she said, "I want to talk about, again, my record on energy."
When she was asked about what would be the tipping point for her to decide to use nuclear weapons were she acting as president, she said "Nuclear weaponry, of course, would be the be-all, end-all of just too many people in too many parts of our planet, so those dangerous regimes, again, cannot be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons, period."
How many times did she say "darn right," "you betcha," "Main Streeters," and "Joe Six-Pack"?
She went for charm and folksy but came off just plain stupid.
And who could forget her response to a question on economic policy when she started blathering on about her "brother, who I think is the best schoolteacher in the year, and here's a shout-out to all those third-graders at Gladys Wood Elementary School, you get extra credit for watching the debate."
A friend of mine from Porto Alegre was staying at my house last night and watching the debate. When it was over, he turned to me and said, "You know, I'm embarrassed by Lula as our president. He's uneducated. He speaks poorly. But that woman makes me embarrassed for all my American friends. How can she be in this position?"

My favorite moment of stupidity was when she channeled Ronald Reagan and said "there you go again, Joe," thinking that by doing so some of the Reagan magic would wear off on her.
Someone should have told her though that by channeling Reagan, she was putting herself at risk for early-onset Alzheimers.
When she said that, I immediately thought of Lloyd Bensten's line to Dan Quayle. Biden could have paraphrased it: "I knew Ronald Reagan, and Governor Palin, you are no Ronald Reagan."

SP is a TV professional and she came across like a TV pro last night - but not a VP for anybody who paid attention to what was actually being said.

It is not a done deal, many believe it's on the verge of collapse, and the only concrete action taken so far is a $500 million contract with a Canadian firm. That's right, Palin's government outsourced the work to a Canadian company.
I thought Biden showed great restraint in not, in the middle of the debate, stopping Palin in mid-sentence - as if the bitch was actually speaking in complete sentences and not just random, garbled slogans and sentence fragments - and just saying "will you please just shut the fuck up, you stupid whiny cunt?". Now that would have been a moment to remember.

Outside of obeying regulations how can any state government force an oil company to build anything? If it does not have profit potential it won't be built period. Another bonus about Palin is the fact that she may be the successor for an embittered old cancer survivor who feels that he is the only person who truly "luuvs amuurica" and therefore is automatically entitled to be president. I don't expect much from my politicians of either party at this point but the Republicans are nothing more than a mouldering elephant corpse. One can only hope that even with his inexperience Obama has the capacity to inspire America in a way similar to Bobby Kennedy. We're screwed one way or the other but the right guy at the helm may allow us to believe there's a light at the end of the tunnel and it sure won't be a Republican. I just hope it works out better for Obama than it did for Kennedy.

Criticizing Sarah Palin is truly shooting fish in a barrel. But given the huge attention she is getting, you can’t just ignore what she has to say. And there was one thing she said in the debate with Joe Biden that really sticks in my craw. It was when she turned to Biden and declared: “You said recently that higher taxes or asking for higher taxes or paying higher taxes is patriotic. In the middle class of America, which is where Todd and I have been all of our lives, that’s not patriotic.”
What an awful statement. Palin defended the government’s $700 billion rescue plan. She defended the surge in Iraq, where her own son is now serving. She defended sending more troops to Afghanistan. And yet, at the same time, she declared that Americans who pay their fair share of taxes to support all those government-led endeavors should not be considered patriotic.
I only wish she had been asked: “Governor Palin, if paying taxes is not considered patriotic in your neighborhood, who is going to pay for the body armor that will protect your son in Iraq? Who is going to pay for the bailout you endorsed? If it isn’t from tax revenues, there are only two ways to pay for those big projects — printing more money or borrowing more money. Do you think borrowing money from China is more patriotic than raising it in taxes from Americans?” That is not putting America first. That is selling America first.
Sorry, I grew up in a very middle-class family in a very middle-class suburb of Minneapolis, and my parents taught me that paying taxes, while certainly no fun, was how we paid for the police and the Army, our public universities and local schools, scientific research and Medicare for the elderly. No one said it better than Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes: “I like paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.”
I can understand someone saying that the government has no business bailing out the financial system, but I can’t understand someone arguing that we should do that but not pay for it with taxes. I can understand someone saying we have no business in Iraq, but I can’t understand someone who advocates staying in Iraq until “victory” declaring that paying taxes to fund that is not patriotic.
How in the world can conservative commentators write with a straight face that this woman should be vice president of the United States? Do these people understand what serious trouble our country is in right now?
We are in the middle of an economic perfect storm, and we don’t know how much worse it’s going to get. People all over the world are hoarding cash, and no bank feels that it can fully trust anyone it is doing business with anywhere in the world. Did you notice that the government of Iceland just seized the country’s second-largest bank and today is begging Russia for a $5 billion loan to stave off “national bankruptcy.” What does that say? It tells you that financial globalization has gone so much farther and faster than regulatory institutions could govern it. Our crisis could bankrupt Iceland! Who knew?
And we have not yet even felt the full economic brunt here. I fear we may be at that moment just before the tsunami hits — when the birds take flight and the insects stop chirping because their acute senses can feel what is coming before humans can. At this moment, only good governance can save us. I am not sure that this crisis will end without every government in every major economy guaranteeing the creditworthiness of every financial institution it regulates. That may be the only way to get lending going again. Organizing something that big and complex will take some really smart governance and seasoned leadership.
Whether or not I agree with John McCain, he is of presidential timber. But putting the country in the position where a total novice like Sarah Palin could be asked to steer us through possibly the most serious economic crisis of our lives is flat out reckless. It is the opposite of conservative.
And please don’t tell me she will hire smart advisers. What happens when her two smartest advisers disagree?
And please also don’t tell me she is an “energy expert.” She is an energy expert exactly the same way the king of Saudi Arabia is an energy expert — by accident of residence. Palin happens to be governor of the Saudi Arabia of America — Alaska — and the only energy expertise she has is the same as the king of Saudi Arabia’s. It’s about how the windfall profits from the oil in their respective kingdoms should be divided between the oil companies and the people.
At least the king of Saudi Arabia, in advocating “drill baby drill,” is serving his country’s interests — by prolonging America’s dependence on oil. My problem with Palin is that she is also serving his country’s interests — by prolonging America’s dependence on oil. That’s not patriotic. Patriotic is offering a plan to build our economy — not by tax cuts or punching more holes in the ground, but by empowering more Americans to work in productive and innovative jobs. If Palin has that kind of a plan, I haven’t heard it.

I want to know why that isn't taking things out on the poor, starting with you, Sen. Biden.
BIDEN: Well Gwen, where I come from, it's called fairness, just simple fairness. The middle class is struggling. The middle class under John McCain's tax proposal, 100 million families, middle class families, households to be precise, they got not a single change, they got not a single break in taxes. No one making less than $250,000 under Barack Obama's plan will see one single penny of their tax raised whether it's their capital gains tax, their income tax, investment tax, any tax. And 95 percent of the people in the United States of America making less than $150,000 will get a tax break.
Now, that seems to me to be simple fairness. The economic engine of America is middle class. It's the people listening to this broadcast. When you do well, America does well. Even the wealthy do well. This is not punitive. John wants to add $300 million, billion in new tax cuts per year for corporate America and the very wealthy while giving virtually nothing to the middle class. We have a different value set. The middle class is the economic engine. It's fair. They deserve the tax breaks, not the super wealthy who are doing pretty well. They don't need any more tax breaks. And by the way, they'll pay no more than they did under Ronald Reagan.

PALIN: I do take issue with some of the principle there with that redistribution of wealth principle that seems to be espoused by you. But when you talk about Barack's plan to tax increase affecting only those making $250,000 a year or more, you're forgetting millions of small businesses that are going to fit into that category. So they're going to be the ones paying higher taxes thus resulting in fewer jobs being created and less productivity.

I can vote in ~40 of the 50 states (or ~40 of the 57 states if you ask Obama,,,,, or in all 57 of the 57 states of you ask ACORN). However you slice it, California would be one of the ~40, so I can vote.
My biggest bitch with militant feminist would be that they were a driving force in shaping California's divorce laws which has severely hindered my ability to keep the stuff I worked for all my life. Living in California the religious right has about zero impact in my day to day life whereas the left has their nose deep into every aspect of my life. Obama will inevitably move towards the center, while McCain has become so unpredictable no one feels comfortable predicting what he'll do tonight, let alone if he were elected, And that's why my Wall Street friends tell me they are supporting a Democrat for the first time in their lives. They trust the people Obama has around him, and look no further than McCain's choice of Palin to conclude he lacks the judgment to govern.

Laguy, as you know, I have been runnng my own campaign for president and have reason to believe that my write-in intiative will begin to get traction in the next few days. For that reason, I just cannot toss the towel in just yet. I was considering going on TV this morning just to enhance the suspense regarding my campaign status and possible endorsement. But I had a jamaican jerk experience last night and got up a bit late.
Here are the facts. I am still running for president. I have been promoting the doctrine of the Fairness Party aggressively since last December. As a matter of fact, I voiced my "Do it with bliss in '08" slogan in Lima last new year's eve. I have concentrated my campaign to bring untold numbers of women to my cause. I guess, in retrospect, it would have been more effective if I had pushed it inside the US instead of in south and central america. But gawwwd! what if some gringa decided to force me to deliver on my motto! I would rather shit barbwire than have sex with a gringa.
I gotta tell ya, Laguy, my TV appearances have been sparse in the last few years. As a matter of fact, the last "Meat the Press" experience that I had was when I has sex with the spinner who worked at a newstand in Copa.
But being somewhat pragmatic, there is an outside chance that my campaign will peak a bit late. If there is no major movement in the next few days, I will go ahead and make an announcement. But the TV guys will simply have to do a remote. I will not go to NY just for one interview. Tune in for the feed from the "blissmore estate" next sunday morning.
Ok. I already told you that I could not vote for McCain. I also know that I simply will not be able to endure Palin's voice for four years. I will have to stay in cellar for four years, leave the country or poke an icepick down both my ear canals. Can you IMAGINE listening to her speak on a regular basis? Her voice is like a dental drill sans novacaine.
It is beginning to look like I will endorse Barack despite the news that he has fathered two African-American children within wedlock. At least he owned up to it. I spoke with him about it this afternoon and he was quite cordial despite the occasional tension that has risen during the long campaign. I was particularly touched when he asked me for a bit of help in a personal matter. After a long pause, he told me that there was a guy who was named after a large south american cat who was trying to fuck his wife. Knowing that I had friends in low places, he asked me to help him get to the bottom of it. His motivational gifts became evident when he said these words to me: "your are a cornpone mickey spillane sort of guy. I know you will not let me down."
What do you suppose he was talking about?

CFK, so YOU are the leak in my organization! Now it all makes sense. I guess this means I will have to appoint you head of the CIA to add a bit of continuity from the imcumbent to my administration. Uhh, assuming my campaign gets traction in the next few days.
Every administration needs a controllable leak. If CFK put a tourniquet on his weewee he probably could get a little control on his leak. It will be interesting to see the vetting report on that guy. One rule in my administration: No detectable hubris, no appointment! Anyone who checks out that clean has got to be hiding something.

Actually, whenever I signed up for this site I was really drunk and in that period of time I had been banging Lao girl #1 and her friend Lao girl #2 from work. The problem with the issue raised in Topic 3 is one would have to wait until one of them died to cash in on the bet. OTOH, perhaps the hypothetical mother-in-law could move them in that direction (i.e. death, not marriage) by providing some good drugs. Or, if not that, I'm sure some of their living-in-Alaska's-meth-capital friends could help them out.

I usuually shy away from commenting on politics; too much emotional invective, not enough rational discussion and a high likelyhood of looking like a fool. That said, several international publications editorialized late summer/early fall that regardless of which candidate won the election, they most likely would be a one-term-wonder. Why? The economy and international situation will get much worse before it gets better, and since the electorate, in general, focuses their frustration and anger on the individual and party in office when times are bad, it doesn't bode well for Obama.
She just announced that she was going to resign as the governor of Alaska as of July 26th.
What is she going to do now? Go back to school and learn how to read a speech without sounding like a jerky playing tape recording?

This whole episode has just been so frightening. It's shocking that they would post that on her web-site, with all of those hilarious mistakes. It reads like something that Kid Cisco would have posted on this site a couple of years ago. How could a decent percentage of such an advanced society admire the stupidity? It's really sad.
