Forgive my arrogance, but I HAVE THE ULTIMATE taste in pop culture among anyone on this board (or any others).
Will post a you tube video link for the song of the day on you tube (GOD BLESS YOU TUBE!!!).
Will comment if anyone is UBER-bored and wants to respond.

The late Bradley N. was supposedly 100% punk. He has a rather famous bootlegged diatribe where he tried to explain what a "rude boy" was.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avQYs8nl01Y
My best friend from Junior High explained it similarly when I asked why he was dressed so "funny" the day after summer vacation 1982...

the BEST Sublime songs were 100% originals
Freeway time/county jail
garden grove
wrong way
what i got
date rape
Jailhouse
His acoustic album was by FAR his best, IM), but im biased towards voice/naked guitar stuff.
B. Nowell definitely liked B. Marley. So Should we all.
There's some Angeles City reggae/marley/sublime tribute band that's actually quite good.
Please don't laugh, but they named themselves after eddie/arsenio's "Coming to America" band:
SEXUAL CHOCOLATE!

Oh,
and re: best for last,
BADFISH?
Was with Ahora-007 (rest in peace???) once at Roadhouse in AC, and in his ZEAL to interrupt a 20 minute block of Celine Dion (to the dancers' dismay!), he wrote on a napkin THIS (accompanied by 100 pesos) request:
"ANYTHING by Sublime"
The clueless PI DJ played "Rivers of Babylon", CLEARLY THE gayest Sublime song ever recorded!!!
By Blazers on Saturday, February 28, 2009 - 11:49 am: Edit |
Sublime was one of the most innovative and talented bands ever. They played punk, hip hop, ska, reggae and Bradley spoke fairly fluent Spanish. Listen to "Caress Me Down". Although Seattle brought about the greatest bands from the early to mid nineties. Orange County had a few talented bands at the time that were very innovative. I was actually more bummed about Bradley's death than Kurt Cobain.
Now Porker, in order to beat me in knowledge and taste in pop culture, you need to catch up with television, for which you have been deprived of living in Mexico. You have never even seen the two greatest television shows in tv history in Deadwood and The Wire. I will change that very soon. Also Six Feet Under, Rescue Me, First 2 seasons of Nip and Tuck, Battlestar Galactica, Mad Men, etc. Time to catch up.
"Dexter" is probably the best show of the last year or three. The new HBO comedy "Eastbound and Down" is showing some real promise as well.

I bow down to the US masters and look forward to my next trip to Asia where I can buy complete seasons of said shows for 60 cents per DVD disc.
Yes, PIRACY APPALLS ME!
The Brad Nowell accoustic CD would probably make my top 10 of all time.
By Porker on Saturday, February 28, 2009 - 02:08 pm: Edit |
Pool Shark is my tied for my 2nd favorite Sublime song.
Badfish is #1, Freeway Time #2. Every time I hear the CLINK at the beginning of Badfish, I flash to TJ afternoons with my best friends.
Blazers, he was surely fluent in Spanish.
MY next beer (Pacifico's cheap here, trying to punch the Tecate group in the mouth and gain market share. Sierra Madre Brewing company had 70 peso beer available at HEB this week. And a Light version. Have all of YOU tried "Tijuana Beer" from the Tijuana Brewing Company? The liquor store two doors away from Adelitas sells it. I'M surprised Adelitas DOESN'T, but it's THE bar that offers THE most beers in Mexico, the only place I know of that offers Coke AND PEPSI? PLUS BUDWEISER!) is in his dead fat ass's honor.

Yes, Dexter is currently the best show on television with Californication and Weeds also outstanding. Showtime exceeds HBO at the moment.
Deadwood, while EXCELLENT, is hardly the best ever. For unknown reasons, I never saw a single The Wire.
Blazers, I notice that your list does not include a single show from the traditional networks. I think that we are watching the slow death of the networks.
Good riddance.
I want entertainment that is made for me, not to sell me to advertisers. Now that I pay over a buck a month for cable(internet, digital package, HBO and Showtime), I'm ready to start paying a subscription to watch shows delivered "On Demand" that is delivered via my broadband to something like an Apple TV so I can watch in the highest currently practical quality, 720P. If iTunes or Netflix get their act together and offer a "subscription" that lets me get what I want, I would dump cable TV. I'm trying to like hulu.com but just not getting it.
I'm really liking the "new TV" as illustrated by your list of shows.
By Blazers on Saturday, February 28, 2009 - 03:45 pm: Edit |
Deadwood is not the best ever, The Wire is the best ever....at least drama. Even though we can be nostalgic about shows in the 70's, very few of them hold up now when you go back and watch them. The exceptions are : All In The Family, Sanford and Son, and Taxi. For the 60's, I still enjoy Get Smart and The Munsters. The only decent thing out of the 80's was Northern Exposure. 90's was Seinfeld. Other than than that, the best television has come since cable television has started making series.
What a loser I am I dont know any of those tv shows, other than family guy , curb your enthusiasm and good eats I dont really watch tv shows.

Yesterday's song was The Specials "A Message To You Rude Boy".
This one is from "Skin and Bones" DVD, probably my favorite music DVD ever, and Grohl seems to me at this moment in time to be in my top 5 favorite songwriters, and I LOVE his voice.

Dave Grohl doing "Friend of a Friend". In that acoustic concert DVD he talks more about Cobain and how their place constantly smelled of turtle shit and how the turtles would keep him all night by banging into the sides of the cage! CLASSIC!
More Dave Grohl, a duet with a special guest:

Porker,
I knew you were alright, but knowing you're a FF fan...outstanding! BTW, saw them play at the Rock in Rio festival in Rio in 2001 and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. REM headlined, and Beck was also on the bill, along with some great Brasilian bands.

EA, shhhhh, or they gonna kick me (and Blazers) out of the cool kids' club!
I don't think I ever hear anything OTHER than country until I was 11. (well, besides 70's Elvis), does that count?) Or maybe AM radio for a 5 minute commute...
Then when I got my own 'record player', seemed like I liked that Shaun Cassidy dude (LOL!), Queen, and the BEATLES better!
I bet I can't name 5 country songs from the last 25 years, but I can name 300 classics before the mid-70's (and have most of them dl'ed).
Hank Williams' redneck blues is some of my all-time favorite music.
For El_A:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wr4y2_BqHYg&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7mg1AB6ZjM&feature=related (harmony's so simple and SO SO HARD TO DO RIGHT)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1Wk1IyzE1Y&feature=channel_page
Country vids seems audiophonically challenged. I'd comment on tech stuff in redneck land, but that'd likely offend...

And the predecessor to the proprietary record player was the EIGHT TRACK!
I met some crazy, crazy, PSYCHO young-20's military dude in AC once. He bought me, Xenono and PHXGuy several Jim Beam shots each, challenging ALL OF US that we couldn't "drink with a MARINE".
He passed out soon after, breaking the CR door in the process (La Pasha)), and since I was the only guy left in the bar, I had several bar employees telling me, HEY, YOUR FRIEND'S IN TROUBLE, they gonna call d polis on ur friend"
Short story long, the guy was bad news. The AC cops walked us to an ATm where he insisted on going to pay his bar tab, and randomly PUNCHING A TRIKE he managed to bleed profusely in the process.
All over Porker's new pair of jeans...
I saw him in a Wild Orchid Van (where he was staying) to the AUF hospital where we had a few hilarious calls to the USA at 6 PM on a holiday weekend about whether his champus insurance would cover the 60 USD they overcharged him for stitching him up for the "punching the trike" gash.
Dude gave me 5K in bloodstained cash (not joking. SERIOUS BLOOD MONEY!) to go pay the la pasha fuckers for the busted CR door and drinks the next day.
I did when I woke up the next PM (didnt get hom etil 8 AM myself, the GF was freaking out that I was out all night, but I spun a good excuse story that was 100% TRUE).
Oh, re: country music:
And if I'm lying I'm dying:
Dude's name was
JOHNNY RODRIGUEZ!
Yeah, Johnny Rodriguez owes me a new pair of jeans.
Current cost in Mexico, about 60 USD

There is a lot of amazing alternative country out there the last 10 years or so. Do yourself a favor and listen to Neko Case's last two albums as well as anything done by Junior Brown.
For me, I am partial to: Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, Waylon Jennings, Emmylou Harris, Conway Twitty, Merl Haggard and my all-time favorite, George Jones.
Pork,
Conway and Loretta, George and Tammy; those duos are country gold. But to include Tom T. Hall THAT, my friend, was a stroke of pure genius.
Like you I grew up on country music. At the time, in my house as a boy, rock was considered the "devil's music" - yet it was okay to listen to Hank Williams sing about drugs, booze and sex. Those crazy Southern Baptists - go figure.) I can remember sneaking this HUGE transistor radio into my room at night and listening to a rock-n-roll station out of St. Louis through a single ear piece. Good times.
Although I'm a primarily a rock fan, I have a soft spot for country. My list of favorite country artists virtually mirrors Blazers though I'd also throw in a little Charlie Pride, Johnny Cash and early Kris Kristofferson. I can even admit (although with pride or a touch of chagrin - I'm not sure) that the only concert I've ever gone to see with my Mom was George Jones in Topeka, KS. The Possum came on stage 45 minutes late, was roaring drunk and just TORE the house down. Yup, the good old days when Saturday night meant Hee Haw.
At the risk of hi-jacking your "ultimate pop taste" thread, here's my contribution combining two of your loves

Today: She's the greatest female rock star ever, IMO, by a "country" mile. This is my favorite song by here, and fairly recent vid.
Some of my greatest prized napster collection is her "Trinity Church Sessions" mass-broadcast 2000 radio show. She owned EVERY song in her 20+ catalog, but I have NEVER seen an online re-cast of any part of that show.

EA, GREAT vid link. In the world's big picture, I'd vote 99.9-0.1 Grohl, but for anyone else it's probably be 260-1.
KK gets MUCHO credit for being a Crimson alum, and writing an all TIME classic "Help me make it through the night".
He was also a decent actor, especially in the kennedy conspiracy theory desert flick.
I "heart" Dave Grohl to an unnatural degree.

Blazers, thanks for the recc. I don't have anything against modern country music, just have no frame of reference beyond Dwight Y (who, AGAIN was a DAMNED GOOD actor?).

2xThursday #2, Dire Straits, Sultans of Swing.
Some Thai cover band in Thailand did a very respectable version of it on my first trip there in 2003. Thai cover bands never get the acclaim that the Filipinos do, but I have seen several that were GOOD. They don't have a CLUE about the lyrics they're singing, but they can hold Tarantino's Japs 5-6-7-EIGHTS jock in faking it!

Porker,
Here's a list of some of the country artists that I listen to. It's not definitive nor do I like everything these people put out, but I do like these songs. (BTW, I'm not sure what "alternative country" is.)
Toby Keith - He's a big ole redneck and I like a LOT of his stuff.
"Stays in Mexico" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW3mWI2Rmkc
Kenny Chesney - Has won several CMA Entertainer of the Year awards, kind of a country-fried version of Jimmy Buffett
"I Go Back" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFK6QOAVNbQ&feature=channel_page
"No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problems" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbMoFYtZ6o8&feature=channel
Sugarland - I don't really follow this duo, but this video is INTENSE!
"Stay" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azHVOoDLfHc
Trace Adkins - Another giant redneck (is there a theme here?) I would have like to have been on set when they filmed these two videos.
"Honky Tonk Badonkadonk" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3dHxAYYXhc&feature=channel
"Hot Mama" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C86BZvr3QQk
Montgomery Gentry - Cool song
"Hell Yeah" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_e44zTRl22A&feature=PlayList&p=422675E2C006473D&index=0&playnext=1
Big & Rich - GREAT tune below, also check out "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy."
"8th of November" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfElHIt7n0s&feature=related
Hank Williams Jr. - The ultimate redneck and I'm a sucker for anything in Drop D or Double Drop D tuning.
"A Country Boy Can Survive" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4s0nzsU1Wg
Delbert McClinton - I'm not sure how to classify him - country, rock, or blues. I guess it don't matter because I do like!
"Somebody to Love" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TlaDUHMcfA&feature=related
And now the hotties of country music (in no particular order):
Faith Hill - Saw her in concert with Alan Jackson in Phoenix when she was just starting out and remember thinking "MAN, she is hot!"
"Breathe" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjpwL3OGHCE
Sara Evans - Not too bad for an older gal, good pipes too.
"Born to Fly" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzqfRkJt2m8feature=channel_page}
Gretchen Wilson - The ultimate female redneck (with a nice rack.)
"California Girls" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJ-Xl7ykddk
Shania Twain - Her music isn't the greatest, but I'm so busy watching her I don't hear a thing she sings.
"That Don’t Impress Me Much" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SOh6mSEZss
Martina McBride - I've got a friend who went to high school with her in Sharon, Kansas. Dude claims bragging rights as he claims to have nailed her. He's not much of a bull-shitter, so I tend to believe him. I'd do her!
"Ride" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3bKcuRw87E&feature=channel_page
Enjoy!

Was Martina McBride the chick that Roger Clemens was supposedly engaging in illegal acts with?

Oh all-knowing and never-incorrect Blazers,
Wow, you REALLY went out on a limb with that list.
If I remember correctly, Porker was asking about modern country artists. Your list contains (arguably) four "modern" country artists. I will not quibble about Allison Krauss or Ricky Skaggs - except to say they're bluegrass artists which is, to borrow your words, "not country, but still a distant cousin" - as both are brilliant.
I was only able to find a couple of songs from Don Edwards and, while he sounds to be a good storyteller, he's about as fresh as a bar girl's bikini bottoms.
Neko Case just sucks. I tried to give her an honest and unbiased listening to, but to call that country is an abomination. Rest assured, if that is what passes for country in California, country music as we know it in the Heartland is a completely different beast. Sounds more like complaint-folk music to me. She does have a strong voice though (and she probably got good grades in school.)
I will agree with you about the southern rock genre. Skynyrd, the Allmans, .38 Special, and Molly Hatchet were HUGE for me in high school. However, there's been nothing new in that arena (EXCEPT for many of the country artists that I posted above) in the last 20 years. Today's modern country music is a much closer cousin to southern rock than southern rock ever was to traditional country. But you'd actually have to LISTEN to modern country to understand that.
As I said before, the list I posted are musicians and songs that I like and I will stand by them. (Well, except for the "hot country girls list" which I posted tongue-in-cheek - although I will admit to liking a lot of Gretchen Wilson's stuff.)
The death of modern country music has come at the hands of artists like Garth Brooks, Alabama, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, and "cross-over" pukes like Kid Rock.
Oh, and for your future reference, I prefer "turd-breath" to "shit-bird."

Porker,
Clemen's chick was Mindy McCready. She kind of a slutty-looking blonde but pretty average singer IMHO. I'm not much of a fan - except for the "slutty-looking blonde" part!

I realize you said modern country artists but calling your lists "artists" is stretching it just bit. Trace Atkins, Kenny Chesney, Sugarland, Big and Rich,Faith Hill etc are not country artists in my book....it's bubblegum pop.
Check out Junior Brown....especially live.
I know Porker and have a pretty good idea of his taste and he would hate the new country that was on shitbird's list.

Thursday, not sure where to get the uncensored version streaming on the 'net, I downloaded it, personally. This is the you tube version that has managed to stay on line for 2+ years. I was once "banned by this band" by napster, before a simple easy fix was done to let me happily grab all the music again for free. A significant amount of my student loan money back in the day was spent on the recording industry, so I appreciate the dividend now that I have an actual income (howver meager it might be!).
Anyway, Ginger Lynn as a milfy hooker. What a stretch!
I like the Seger original as well...

Again, I appreciate all contributions here, and while tastes may differ (and mine's BETTER! HA!), I like to hear what others like.
Example: I don't GET Bruce Springsteen. Never liked him, pretty sure I never will. And, again, he was a total buffoon at the Super Bowl.
Did someone mention Southern Rock? I have been going through I southern rock listening phase.
Here is Marshall Tucker Band playing a sweet tune.

One of the greatest bands of all time but wouldnt even put that song in their top 50 of all time. I will take every song off of OK Computer over "Creep"
Greatest albums of all time:
1. The Beatles White Album
2. Pink Floyd The Wall
3. Radiohead OK Computer
By Porker on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 - 02:30 pm: Edit |
'Not in the top 50' means Blazers has his Hater hat on, but if I was only talking about the full band version of Creep, I might also not be so effusive.
But the KROQ acoustic version (once upon a time a "B" side release)? No song can come within SNIFFING distance! Forgive the stupid vid, the audio makes up for it:

Gonna repeat, repeat myself (sure to happen again sooner or later). This Strummer/Jones song is fucking incredible.
Rhythmic drumming is BRILLIANT, Searing lead guitar, boozy vocals, punch-you-in-the-face lyrics...
I don't own (TRIPLE DISC? WTF?) Sandanista. Should I? London Calling was damned fucking good...

Let's go with the most hated song on Youtube today!
Rebecca Black's Friday!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2LRROpph0
126 million views and over 2.5 million dislikes. It overtook Justin Bieber's "Baby" as the most hated song on Youtube!
The song has become a cultural phenomenon due to the absurdity of the lyrics and video.
