L-Carnitine:

A major cause of aging is the deterioration of the energy-producing components of the cell which results in reduced cellular metabolic activity, the accumulation of cellular debris, and eventual death of the cell.

The most effective antiaging therapy to maintain youthful cellular energy metabolism is the amino acid L-carnitine, which functions via several mechanisms to protect cells from the effects of aging. L-carnitine assists in the transport of fat through the cell membrane and into the mitochondria within the cell, where these fats are oxidized to produce the cellular energy ATP.

Acetyl-L-carnitine is the acetyl ester of the amino acid L-carnitine. Acetyl-L-carnitine is absorbed into the bloodstream more efficiently than L-carnitine, passes more easily through cell membranes, and is utilized more efficiently in the mitochondria of the cell.

L-carnitine has been approved by the FDA under the name Carnitor as a therapy for low energy levels, congestive heart disease, and other diseases associated with low cellular energy. Numerous published studies have shown that L-carnitine is effective in treating a wide range of diseases including the neurological diseases of aging, immune dysfunction, and
diabetic complications.

Caution:
For some people, L-carnitine, especially acetyl-L-carnitine, may have a stimulating effect. Therefore, it may be unwise to take it in the evening.

The acetylated ester of the amino acid acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) plays a critical role in maintaining youthful cellular energy metabolism and blood flow. Two major factors involved with brain aging are: diminished brain cell metabolism and reduced cerebral circulation. ALC easily crosses the blood-brain barrier and its potential role in protecting neurological function is clear. Studies show that ALC may prevent the neural impairment that normally occurs in oxygen deprivation and researchers have suggested that ALC should be given to children who suffer from oxygen deprivation in the womb. In published reports, short-term administration of ALC reversed ammonia-induced brain cell abnormalities and normalized brain cell energy metabolism in mice. The researchers suggested that the protective effect of acetyl-L-carnitine may maintain the energy-producing capabilities (mitochondrial respiration) of the central nervous system and emphasized its value for people with diseases that elevate ammonia levels in the blood, such as cirrhosis of the liver.

Just a big study published in Journal of urology that showed Carnitine was equivalent to actual testosterone administration for treatment of sexual dysfunction in aging population without the bad side effects on prostate that testosterone causes. As we are all "aging" to one degree or another -- this may actually be a worthwhile supplement. The patients who took it also felt more energy and had less evidence of depression etc.
I have always been a basher of these supplements , but this seems to have been a well done study with verified results.

I am on my way to GNC !!

I am a big supplement guy.

It probably does me no good at all, but I take a load of crap from Echinacea to flax seed oil to coral calcium to multi vitamins and even to the dick size and cum load enhancement pills. My herb and vitamin pharmacy is ridiculous. I have noticed better and harder erections, but no dick size or load increases. I also noticed the volume I do on a trip is higher when I take all my supplements throughout the trip. I can do more sessions per day. It is probably in the 3-5 ladies per day range instead of the 1-2 with the occasional 3 range.

I discovered L-Carnitine when I started the Atkins diet as a supplement that supposedly helped break down fat into energy. It seemed logical to take given that Atkins’ goal was to put my body into Ketosis and have it burn fat for energy in order to lose weight. I take it once a day now.

Xen
Probably much lower doses than were used in this study. This is the protocol they used---

Subjects were randomized to receive 1 of 3 treatments: testosterone undecanoate 160 mg/day, propionyl-L-carnitine 2 g/day plus acetyl-L-carnitine 2 g/day, or placebo. All treatments were administered for 6 months.

Total of 4 grams of Carnitine in two different forms. It is impressive that it performed just as well as fairly high dose Testosterone. Much safer to use obviously. Both groups had far superior results compared to the placebo group BTW.

Xen,

I would be interested in what products you think are most effective. I have tried various combinations over a few trips and have not been to impressed. I like to session at least three times a day and they sometimes are long sessions.

I have found zinc and L-arginine help cum load a bit, but things like Horny Goats Weed and Yohimbe nothing discerningly different. Staying erect is not a problem, but cumming is, especially if I am sessioning over 1X a day.

Do you work out? If you do I would also like to know if there are any supplements you would recommend. I do 3-4 gym session a week, increasing to 5-6 4 weeks before I travel. This definetely helps keep me going through heavy sessions, but I am sure a good combination of supplements would help both in fitness as well as sexual performance.

Wickedwilly,

I am fairly religious about hitting the gym. I am a 6 days a week kind of a guy. However, when I am in Brazil playing, I only catch the gym when I can.

I have never found anything to help the cum load other than Creatine. However, the incremental difference is small and may be attributable to other things.

I also make sure that I am getting a multi-vitamin everyday and I also make sure that I am getting around 1.25 grams of protein per pound of body weight. I find that the meal replacement shakes and to a lessor extent the meal replacement bars really help pick me up after a good hard session.

I really like Myoplex and Labrada Lean Body shakes.

If I have trouble cumming, a good weight workout and getting a couple of goods meals in with plenty of protein will get me back in the game quickly. It helps clear the head as much as anything.

Lastly, the best thing you can do is drink tons of water. If you are sessioning 3 times a day, that is probably the equivalent of two 30 minute intense runs. Your body will require additional water.

Good luck, nice to see someone else doing and believing in the same basic principles.

Ok, here is my complete supplement list. I have found this to be fairly effective for me.

In the morning with breakfast I take:

Vitalert multi-vitamin
Garlic
Dr. Power's Coral Calcium
Echinacea
Flax Seed Oil
Saw Palmetto
Ginkgo Biloba
Coenzyme q-10
L-Carintine

In the evening with dinner I take:

Ultra Vita Man (from puritan.com)
Super Male Plex (from puritan.com)
Enzyte (yes, I admit it)
Ogoplex (This was a 30 day free sample and not a normal part of my supplement routine.)

I've also started exercising for 65 minutes a day. I did this for six days a week and just recently stopped as my upcoming trip to Hong Kong is tomorrow. I did this for over a month.

I found the combination above to help out the most. When I went to Rio and took all those with me, I was doing 3-5 girls a day easy. When I stopped taking them in the DR and Philippines, I went down to 1-2 a day with the occasional 3. Perhaps that is a function of the destination though and not the supplements. But I did find myself just wanting to sleep sometimes and not wanting to get laid. What the fuck was wrong with me?

I can see Khun_Mor rolling his eyes at my list now….

LOL Xen
Your list is about one fifth of what some of my patients come up with. It's amazing that the nutritional supplement advocates have been so successful at getting Americans to swallow tons of unproven untested and unregulated substances-- sometimes with fatal results --i.e. ephedra etc.
IMHO the effect of the vast majority of these supplements is above the neck not below the waist !!
99 % of these supplements when subjected to double blind studies such as required of drugs fail miserably in delivering any of there myriad of health claims but so many people waste millions of dollars on a " quick fix ". Amazing how many obese, sedentary, cigarette smoking couch potatoes religiously take fistfuls of supplements and vitamins " because it's healthy ". We are a pill oriented society. If one of my patients has any complaint they expect to recieve a prescription to fix it and are pissed off if none is forthcoming. Thus the antibiotic resistant bacteria epidemic among other ills.

I digress-- My post was to point out that this is one of the ONLY scientific studies to actually show a benefit, and an impressive one at that , of a nutritional supplement !

Thanks for the advice guys. Water could be one problem with me as I do not drink a lot at home or when I travel, so I will try to up my intake as a matter of course.

I work out not just to get fit for hobbying, but for health and of course vanity. I do however intensify it when I am coming up for a trip. Even if I pay to play, I like to look as good as I can (not easy!).

I have always decried pills and supplements, but as age creeps in (yuk I am the wrong side of 40!), as an aid to help maintain my very active lifestyle, I am more receptive to taking them. I started to experiment in the last eighteen months to help when hobbying, but now think they could help maintain my work rate in the gym and outside as well. I will build your regime into mine Xen, to see if it helps at all and report back on results. I will also try the bars and shakes, I have been looking at these recently and will order some when I return for Cuba in a few weeks.

I am hoping to have a trip to either Rio or Los (maybe both) in August or October so have time to get it into my system. I also thought you were brave mentioning Enzyte (I had to look this one up.), but good on you, I will do what I have to maintain, my health, fitness and sexual prowess subject to them not being harmful and not give a sh.t about what others think, I will be the one having fun after all.

Thanks again guys all the advice is gratefully received.

Xenono, lay off the echinacea! It's only good as a booster. If you make it part of your diet, it actually lowers your immunity. I had a pal who went into anaphalactic shock and almost killed himself as a result of daily doses of echinacea. Don't take my word for it, read up.

Khun mor,

It should be noted that ephedra has been part of the materia medica in Traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It is indispensible in the treatment of certain kinds asthma and other conditions.

It should only be administered by a trained and licensed professional. It should not be used for weight loss.

Also interesting is that on at least 50% of all drugs manufactured it is disclosed that the actual mechanism of action is unknown.

Also prescription drugs are the fourth leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the US.

Greater than diabetes and upper respiratory disease.

I agree that the supplement industry needs cleaning up but the death and distruction caused by drugs puts them in a class all their own.

Note that arginine can have an adverse effect if you are prone to cold sores.
