junk...

Sleep, exercise, and eat good is the way to boost your immune system. Popping a few pills before a flight will result in nothing.

how ignorant is that?

i have some co-workers that use this, and they like it, and i actually have it on my to-do list to pick some up.

sure, sleep and excercise and eating right is perfect, but complementing that with antioxydants and amino acids and vitamins and electrolytes, especially during time of physical stress (traveling, over-exercising if you know what i mean, eating differently, etc.) is a good idea. works for me.

"how ignorant is that?"

Not very, I take it medicine is not your strong suit...

" have some co-workers that use this, and they like it, and i actually have it on my to-do list to pick some up. "

sounds like a if/then statement right out of the definition of "ignorant"

"sure, sleep and excercise and eating right is perfect, but complementing that with antioxydants and amino acids and vitamins and electrolytes, especially during time of physical stress (traveling, over-exercising if you know what i mean, eating differently, etc.)"

Complimenting a well balanced diet with suppliments has not been shown to health benefits. In a pinch on the plane? have a little box of packaged cerial, nearly all of which is fortified along with the milk. While your eating, read the nutrition contents.

In case, you want to learn from something a little more credidible than your co-workers:

July 2000, Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise looks at amino acids in bolstering the immune system and the role of suppliments. It is one in a long list of PUBLISHED research in medical journals, which for the most part state emphatically that although intuitive, there is no evidence to date to link taking suppliments with boosting a "healthy" person's immune system...

Roubenoff, chief of physiology at the Human Nutrition Research Center at Tufts University:

"does this translate to a healthy person needing to take supplements? Once you have a deficiency fixed, there is no linear extrapolation," In other words, stockpiling against a possible deficiency won't necessarily work. Also, since amino acids are protein, they could harm kidneys or, at the very least, produce very expensive urine.

NOW ONTO MY POINT:

particularly important to the immune system are: Vitamin A (suppliment not widely recommended), Beta-Carotene: Vitamin B2: B5, B6, B12, C, Vitamin E, zinc, iron, and selenium.

If you or anyone else thing taking vitamins a day or so before a flight and during a flight is going to result in anything resembling a bolstered immune system, PASS the lemonade. Assuming you had a DEFICIENCY, then it takes TIME with consistent use/levels to improve the "system" as there is a positive feedback model in nutrition....

NOW for the junk part-- assuming you 1) had the need for AND 2) wanted to take suppliments , you can pay 40 bucks for these masked/rebranded suppliments or pay 10 bucks for good multivitamin.

I would love to be enlightened and hear the logic in spending that additional 30 bucks... Ohhh ya, i forgot-- your friends like it. ;)

DM

You slap purdy hard. r u suggesting that the Nutrition Supplement business is selling snake oil?

My my.

My fav is "bioflavinoid". My mum insisted that our family should eat tacos made from mystery meat (sweetbreads) cause there were full of them. It is amazing what hifalutin words can sell.

Anyone with a lead-in like his with zero substance deserves a little nudge...

I take a daily multivit as my diet is highly irregular due to work/road. I probably piss away 99%, but there is always that 1% and I also pay very little for them ($6 per 100 or 3 month supply). Whether or not this does anything is a matter of speculation. I typically don't get sick any time of the year except perhaps a pattaya cough due to sucking in toxic fumes while blasting around the streets on the scooter or the occasional mild bout of the runs from 3rd world street cart. (NOTE: I'm not implying cause and effect with multivitamins here as I don't typically get sick when not taking the vits)

The marketing/purchasing of high end or specialty suppiments is BUNK, so yes that's my position ;)

I agree with Don. I spent many years in the health business when I was younger.

A solid Nulti-Vitamin, and on occasions a little extra vitamin C to help me fight off the cold/flu season, is really all one needs.

The main thing to remember about you selection of a daily vitamin is to pick a natural based. If for example, you Centrum or God forbid Theragramn N brand, you will recieve almost no benefit at all. These companies use an inexpensive bonding agent which unfortunately does not efficiently breakdown in your system. In the end, nost of the nutritional value of these vitamins get passed out the pooper, leaving very little benefit to you. Make sure to get a natural bonding product such as NatureMade or similar, if you want to get the benefits.

The only thing I know of that has any supportive evidence with regards to improving your immune system is CoQ10. This is recommended by many of the most reputable cancer researchers.

By Don Marco on Thursday, October 06, 2005 - 07:33 am:  Edit

There's been some very positive research with certain amino acids with cancer patients as well, but nothing conclusive and nothing to suggest it improves a "healthy" person's immune system.

personally, I buy a generic all-natural multi, but was suprised a while back to see Men's Health magazine select Centrum Silver as their top pick for multivitamins for all men. Probably for lycopene... dunno.

When I was in college, my roomie (u maine hockey player x'ed w/ Ogre of revenge of the nerds) got me convinced that herballife was his key to stamina and sports prowess... I tried it for a week and told him he's spending a lot of money for brilliant looking (really bright gold) piss. Or should I say fools gold?

The one additional ingredient in the formulation that started this thread that may be helpful while traveling is ginger. I find it helps motion sickness alot, and wouldn't be a bad thing to pop before a trip for anyone with any tendency in this direction.

I have used Airborne for quite a while. It is pretty amazing stuff. If you start the stuff at the first sign of getting sick it will shorten the time you are down by half. I know a ton of people that have used it with the same results. I used it on my trip to Rio. One tab, twice a day just to keep my immune system up. I was with several girls at the beginning of my trip and it held it off until I over did it (acutally, over hit it)at the end of my trip and wound up getting sick my last two days in Rio. I was over it by the time I got home. Now if I can just get over Rio. Just my 2 cents. AZ

I use antioxidants (both eating when I can, and powder or less desireable pills) for their long term benefits (e.g. cancer risk).

Only you made a connect between my co-workers using the stuff and my drawing a conclussion that their use implies 'evidence'. I only worte that they used it, and thus I wanted to try it - I never made a judgemental statement tying their use to anything other than my interest.

Last, if you think the average member here is eating well, even if regularly at home then how about on their trips, then, hmmm....

But, I do appreciate an expert medical opinion if that's what you are offering - which your original post of "junk..." certainly didn't represent (nor the valuable nugget that diet and exercise and sleep are preferable to powder or pills.

I am reasonably healthy, I dont know who is super healthy now days, but I work in a lot of countries in the developing world out in villages where hygeine is less than usual etc and rarely get sick so my immune system must be relatively okay?

but taking some amino acids like arginine noticeably increases my amount of cum

and tryptophan noticeably improves my mood and sleep in times of higher stress

and lysine knocks out cold sores on the mouth fast

so there may be a few highly specific uses for some amino acids that go beyond just people with cancer but otherwise I agree with don gringo, there are no miracle pills amongst them and definitely nothing that replaces common sense on diet exercise sleep etc
