That lovely blood test--a brief trip report
Webmaster: Hombre
Posted by Dogster on February 14, 2002 - 19:36 pm
It had been about 10 months since I last got tested for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and Herpes I & II. This was a long time given my activities last year in the gentlemen's playground known as the Zona Norte. And this time I had a rather ominous fear about what might turn up.
Last week, I went to the STD clinic in San Diego on Rosecrans near I-5. (County of San Diego Health Services Complex, 3851 Rosecrans St. 619-692-8550)
I like this place because it is convenient, anonymous and cheap ($14). Also, I've never had a problem simply dropping in. So I guess that I'm putting in a shameless plug for the place.
They drew my blood and I waited a week...
Sometimes I don't consciously realize how worried I am about HIV and other STDs until I go to get tested. So much of our favorite sport involves denial of risk in the service of hedonism. But the fears that I have been avoiding always surface when the moment of truth approaches.
I went back today, and.....
all negative (non-reactive).
This is always a relief. Actually, they didn't do the blood tests for herpes I and II, as they feel this is useless. And since I've never had any symptoms of herpes, there was no reason to do a culture. I've had herpes blood tests done before, and they do buy some peace of mind.
I obtained a written copy of my report. Sometimes I think about bringing a copy of this sort of thing to the Zona, but so far I haven't...
I've taken dangerous dives over the cliff and emerged intact yet again. As I feel relief thanks to medical testing, I watch the illusion of invincibility unfold in my mind. Many thanks to lady luck.
Anyway, here's to life

After reading and hearing of people who have caught something I figured it would be worth it to get tested myself for peace of mind and to further educate myself. Thanks to Dogster for the above post - I went to the same location.
By the way, for those directionally challenged (like myself), it's just east of the 5 on the north side Rosecrans - approximately inbetween the Old Town Trolley Station and Sports Arena Blvd. Note: the above map link (10/15/2000 posting) leads you to think the location is in Coronado.
It is anonymous and cheap - now $15. I went in around 8:00AM and there was only one person in the waiting room with me however yesterday the receptionist told me it was full so your wait may vary.
I filled out a brief form and was called in about five minutes.
I went in and sat down at a desk with a woman who basically reasked me the questions I had filled out. I was offered condoms - she had them in a little basket like she was passing out halloween candy. She gave me an identification number that I use next week to get the results of my testing.
I then went into another room where another woman asked me a few questions and examined my penis for anything visible and out of the ordinary. I managed to contain an erection at this point thank goodness.
I then did a urine sample and went into another room where a nice older lady drew blood. We chatted a bit and I told her my good cholrestol is a bit low and she told me to drink more red wine - whatever you say doctor.
On the form you had the option of getting the Hepatitis B Vaccine which I declined but she convinced me to have it done. She told me that they won't be able to offer this very much longer due to the cost, that all children today receive this, and it can prevent a form of liver cancer. So I figured what the hell and had the shot. It's a series of three shots taken over a six month period (still part of your original $15). I was offered additional condoms by her as well.
If anyone out there is considering doing this I would recommend it. I'll post my results next week.

A few tips:
1) It is probably best NOT to take Viagra before your visit. (Hey--the women there were not attractive when I was there. Have they upgraded????
2) It is probably best to apply one of those condoms BEFORE doing the lab test chick.)
OK... I had to get that outta my system. Good luck with the test...
Anyway, Kudos to you for doing the right thing.

I didn't take Viagra before going to the clinic - it's a fear of mine - I don't think I've ever gone to Azteca massage without sporting wood a couple of times. By the way, the first woman I sat down with was a black woman with huge cans.
Also, the clinic is on the south side of Rosecrans not the north side.

They only offer so many tests in a day, so if you are late, you're out of luck.
But you can call ahead and reserve a "number" if you are good at kissing ass on the phone.
Then you can breeze in just before quitting time and get tested.

Holy shit! No wonder the AIDS test looked like Chinese Food.

Interesting. Rosecrans runs North/South.

I went in yesterday at 1:00 and was the only person in the waiting room. I was called in about two minutes and went in a room with a gal. She opened up my folder and said I was negative for everything. I was back in my car in under 10 minutes. It's a good feeling and worth doing if you monger or date women.
Redone - this place is on the South side of Rosecrans, although East is maybe a better answer. At this area, Rosecrans runs approximately 2 O'Clock to 7 O'Clock. I was thinking in terms of downtown and it is on the downtown side.

Has anyone been to any office other than Rosecrans? Is it the same level of service. I think I will make a visit for piece of mind and I have been intending to get my Hepatitis B vaccination for a while now. Anyone who does not get Hep B vaccinated and participates in this hobby is taking a very unnecessary risk. Why risk a potentially life threatening STD when a few shots can erase that fear forever. One less thing to worry about. And $15 for a hand job doesn't seem to unreasonable. :D Will the woman check my nuts too?
By I_Am_Sancho on Sunday, November 10, 2002 - 12:29 pm: Edit |
OK, so after thinking about it Thursday, I decided to drop by Friday. Went to the Rosecrans office. Walked in and the waiting room was about half full. I ask about the wait and they said 1 1/2 hours. I got the clipboard, sat down, and started filling out questions, then looked up and scanned the waiting room just in time to make eye contact with A COWORKER FROM MY COMPANY who had also taken a couple of hours off that morning . What are the odds of that, plus I am fairly high ranking in the company and this was a low level production worker so it really blew my squeaky clean white collar yuppy image I portray at work. He introduced me to his wife, she was nice. She commented it is good to be checked, and we had a laugh and we all agreed we never saw each other. So anyway I turned in the clipboard and was called to pay $15 a few minutes later, then I just left for a couple of hours and came back after lunch. By then the waiting room was completely full but I checked back in and was told they had been looking all over for me and sit down. So I waited about 5 minutes and was called to the office with some gay guy. Fortunately the gay guy just went over my answers to the questions, I was worried for a second. I signed some stuff and got a number to check my results in a week. Then back to the waiting room and after another 10 minutes I was called back to the dick examination room by an OK looking white woman. She would probably look nice if she was dressed up and had on some makeup. Not a stunner but certainly worthy of handling my genitals. So I talked briefly with her and then she says to stand up and drop em. She had a great attitude about the whole thing and was very professional and I felt much more comfortable than I do even at a normal doctors visit. I got to ask her about that suspicious bump that had been there for ever, she said, just an enlarged follicle, not anything to worry about. Then she looked down my pee hole and thought she might have seen something so she grabbed a cotton swab and went digging for gold. Not the most pleasant thing but it wasn't that bad. I got the impression they don't always do that though. Only because she thought she saw something. Then off to piss in a cup, back to another room where a nice older lady drew a blood sample and gave me a shot for Hepatitis B vaccination. She was nice and had a good technique for drawing the blood. I have been mangled in the past by incompetent blood sample attempts, but this woman did a really good job. After that I waited in the hall for about 15 minutes waiting on the results of my peehole swab test. Happily, that was negative. So now I wait until next week for my results on my piss and blood test. Overall I was very impressed by how easy and professional they were. I'd much rather get checked out there than at my normal doctor. I would highly recommend it to anyone who engages in this hobby and it's just plain foolish to be running around without your Hepatitis B vaccination. Hep B can spread even if you use a condom and can be life threatening. I think from now on I will get checked out quarterly as long as I am doing as many zona chicas as I have been lately. Just watch out for coworkers in the waiting room. Once you are in there you cant make up some story about you're just getting your blood pressure checked or anything.
By Dogster on Sunday, November 10, 2002 - 04:46 pm: Edit |
Congrats on making the visit. Oh, yeah, as you noticed, it gets full at times. Best to go earlier in the week, and early in the day, if you can.
Maybe there's somethin' wrong with your johnson if you didn't sport wood during your verrry special inspection.
The co-worker thing is amusing, I must say. Why not just say that you're worried that you might've caught something down in TJ?
By I_Am_Sancho on Sunday, November 10, 2002 - 05:14 pm: Edit |
They told me that when it rains, everyone figures it would be a good day to get checked out because no one else will be there. Problem is that everyone has the same idea. So add rainy days as a reason to go some other day. But even with the crowded waiting room, I was not waiting too long because I left and came back after lunch.
I was kind of falling in love with the dick inspection lady. I suspect a couple of more minutes and I would have been sporting some major wood but the ol' cotton swab quickly put an end to that.
I figure what are the odds of meeting a co-worker. I mean there are over 2 million people in San Diego county and I just chose that time on a whim. It's funny because the guy who was there is a shopfloor production worker, known to be a recovering drug addict and ex-con on parole. A great guy, but no surprise to see him there. But me on the other hand. Everyone at work knows me as some clean cut white collar conservative. I don't suspect anyone at work would ever suspect in a million years I would be mongering with whores in Tijuana. I'm sure the guy found my presence very contrary to my professional image.

Congrats also on going Sancho. It's funny how this thread of all threads has us evaluating the women working here.
I had much better luck than you did with the amount of people there. It was basically dead both times I was there. The large guy behind the desk was watching DVDs both times (Lord of the Rings and Young Frankenstein). Sounds like we had the same older woman draw our blood and give us the Hep B shots.
I was thinking of the questions that were on that sheet and I know I lied my ass off on a couple of them. In my 'interview' I remember the woman asked me something like had I been out of the country in the past six months and I said I had been to Tijuana a few times. Her next question was did I have sex there and I said no. Even though it is confidential I figured I might as well not admit to anything that could incriminate me.
By I_Am_Sancho on Monday, November 11, 2002 - 12:00 pm: Edit |
I always evaluate the women working anywhere. Especially if they are fondling my genitals. I was really starting to worry when the gay guy called me back. I was glad when I found out he would not be doing any examination and I was very pleased when I met the real dick inspection woman. If you have to get you dick inspected, she is definitely the one you want to have do it. I figured what the hell, when it came to the questions. I'm sure they have heard it all by now anyway. I did get a bit of a reaction on the how many sex partners in the last three months question. I guessed around 20 and the gay guy ask me how I managed to pull that off and I said easy, 2 girlfriends and 18 trips to Tijuana ;). So he said "Oh, so you pay for sex?" and I pointed out that the 18 trips to Tijuana combined cost me a lot less than the 2 girlfriends did so I guess we all pay for sex. And when they ask if I have traveled to South East Asia I said no but my one girlfriend is from Laos and her ex could have been exposed to god knows what kind of exotic Asian jungle STD's there are, and unlike the Chicas in TJ I go bare back with her. I was there to get checked so I wanted them to accurately know my history. What do I care what they think.

Those are great responses and pretty honest answers. I was too paranoid to even tell them the truth.

I-M-S:
Yeah, very honest. I kinda wonder if they keep detailed charts on clients, so I don't give 'em tons of info. Confidentiality is guaranteed by law, but ya never know...
I was joking when I suggested that you mention TJ...
Maybe I'll have to get tested for exotic Asian bareback jungle STD's next time I go. Some of the chicas I hang with in TJ have had multiple Asian partners. Which is very scary (LOL).
I remember the gay questioning dude. Maybe a bit of judgemental attitude, but harmless.

Went in today around 1:00 and got my second dose of Hepatitis B Vaccine. I was in and out in about 10 minutes.
Was flipping around on the TV the other night and Carrot Top was on The Tonight Show. He goes to Leno, 'I took a Hepatitis test and got a B'. I slightly chuckled at this and remembered I could go in again. Dose three in March and I'm done.
Young (20s), asian girl (married) administered the shot, she was friendly. Couldn't get too good of a look at her chest as she was wearing one of those smock things.

Last week I got tested (I do this tri-monthly) for STD's and HIV.
The counselor asked a few questions and I answered them candidly.
I explained I was concerned because I do DATY with a couple of the girls.
He told me that Tijuana has a pretty low HIV rate and they (San Diego County Clinic) have never had an proven oral sex HIV case (Man eating woman, or woman sucking man). And that HIV was pretty hard to catch in normal intercourse.
This made me feel a lot better.
Please note that this does NOT speak to other sexual diseases.
I don't know how true this is....
I told him he had never been near Hotel Najera.

Free HIV Testing in San Diego: There are three types of HIV Testing available in San Diego:
One – Elisa Blood Test – results in one week.
Two – Rapid Blood test – results in 20 minutes.
Three – Early Blood Test – results ???
The Elisa and Rapid blood tests detect HIV antibodies which develop about 82 days after infection. But before the 82 days, the virus sheds rapidly for a few weeks giving a block of time that the subject is very contagious. A week after the date of infection, the HIV virus itself (as opposed to the antibodies) can be detected by the Early test, allowing earlier treatment and the opportunity to avoid giving HIV to partners.
The Early test has two components: 1) Hepatitus C (Which is Confidential, but Reportable, & 2) HIV (Which is Anonymous ). The HIV portion is not given without the accompanying Hepatitus C testing.
The Early Blood Test is associated (at this time) with a UCSD study and is administered by UCSD personnel.
Available through the San Diego County Health Department:
HIV with full STD testing 692-8550
HIV (ONLY) testing 236-2352
Please note the difference between Anonymous and Confidential testing:
Anonymous means you don’t give them your name.
Confidential means they won’t tell anyone unless legally required.
They don’t check your ID. “Think Big Brother”. Decline to give your SSN
and have a fake name, date of birth, and ZIP Code ready.
Reportable means they are required by law to report your illness to the public
health system (State, at least,. I don’t know about Federal).
HIV testing (not free) is also available (ONLY with general STD testing) from the San Diego County Public Health Department at variouslocations.
