On how you live life in Rio. You can live there cheaply or you can live there not so cheaply. The truth is that most dudes that move there don't go to the termas everyday. You have to try to have some form of "normal" life there. Net retirement income goals are different for a lot of people. Odds are if you pay for an apartment free and clear that will be a big headstart. Keep in mind though that even if you buy an apartment you still have expenses and fees. My ex's condo fees were very very high. Something like $275- $300 US per month. That was for a 3 bedroom apartment 1 block off of the beach. $1200 US = R$3500 a month. I would think that would be fine if you didn't hobby too much. You can eat cheap in Rio but you can also spend a lot. I went to several restaurants where I could spend the same as the USA for a nice place. You have to live within your means and budget budget budget. That is ultimately why I knew I couldn't make a move. Too many years ahead of me, I'm too used to living a really high quality of life and I like traveling. If you're serious about this make a speadsheet with ALL your expenses both here in the USA and possible expenses in Rio (including chica fund). The key is sticking to that budget. I'm not sure how old you are but stay realistic. I've met a lot of great guys that are very intelligent but they get sucked into the fantasy world of Rio, Buenos Aires or other cities and they make a move. It's very doable for guys with a ton of money like some of the dudes on the board that essentially won the lotto with stock options, etc. or guys that are near retirment age that have worked hard all their lives and saved up and now can enjoy the fruits of their labor. For all others that are younger with no considerable savings (in addition to retirement income) they need to think long and hard about this. Good luck no matter what you decide.
