I, too have a plan to move to Rio in one or two years from now. My first step was to buy an apartment, which I did in November of last year (the unit is in Copacabana, 2 blocks from the beach). I was there this June for 90 days to furnish the apartment and to research on what kind of business I can go into in Rio. I am now in the process of making a business plan to show to a couple of US based friends who I have brought to Rio to experience the famous Carioca hospitality (meaning, terma GFE). What I am saying is that another route to earn an income to afford living in Rio could be going into business. I know it is not so easy -- being a foreigner, but I have a lot of local close friends in Rio, lawyers, businessmen, doctors, realtors, etc. that have are willing to help me settle. Or, you can do what a friend of mine from Chicago did 4 years ago. He sold his house in the US for US$300K, then bought a nice 2 bedroom apartment in Ipanema for 80K and put 120K in the money market in Brazil and left the remaining 100K in a US bank. His investment in the money market is earning him a annual interest of 12%, or US$1,200. He told me that his monthly cost of living is around R$1,000, so he has +/- R$2K a month left for his "other" things.
