I've only been asked when coming back into the US on foot from Mexico once, and I've crossed the border either on foot, car or through an airport at least 90 times. If Customs or Immigration ever does, I'm sure I'll remind them just as I did the guy at the San Ysidro crossing at TJ: "as I'm a US citizen, coming back to my own country, it's none of your fucking business what I was doing".
