I'll be the first one to react. Although things might be different in TJ than in Matamoros where I lived until I was 12, I remember enough to tell you almost exactly what is happening.
I'm not sure if you're familiar with the term "burro" (donkey) which implies that someone is riding you to get what they want. As a 10 year old there were a few times that I almost became a burro. Your duties as a burro include hiding drugs and SETTING UP their next victims.

This cowards often use the chicas as "burras" in a similar way the used the kids. Is hard not to say no when these individuals put a gun to your head and tell you that if you don't cooperate you're ass is going to end up somewhere no one will ever find you.
Without further going into the details, I think this guy knew about you long before you might think and set the whole thing up. Perla was just his burra and he doesn't give a shit about her.

As far as working at Pelicanos? Could it be that she had done this before and she didn't wanted to be seen at any of the more popular clubs (example: cc)? After all, not many gringos make their way into the pelicanos bar so she is less likely to be seen.
Overall, I think that the bandido had more to do with it than her, but I hope she was left with no option but to go along with plan, otherwise that is one real fuck up thing to do to a guy who has taken her of her every need everytime he's down there.
Thanks for sharing and for bringing back not so good memories for me, but hey WE NEED TO BE AWARE.
