I'm not saying all Mexicans are bad people, not at all. I know many good Mexican people. What I am saying is that the zona draws MANY suspicious characters and has more of its share of weak people who can be easily led, especially for a buck. I suspect that if El Gato knew this chica previously, and it sounds like he did, she probably was not a "bad" person. She was probably coerced into doing it by a boyfriend or desperate for money. Or maybe she had changed. Who knows. I have never handed out trust in the zona easily, ESPECIALLY to someone that works there. I'm sure El Gato will be handing it out carefully in the future given that he only has five lives left!

As far as saying all people north of the border are good people, reread my post. Obviously there are dishonest people everywhere in the world. What I said was your best friends in the zona will be your FRIENDS from north of the border. I suspect you would turn to your drinking buddy Porker first for help if you were in trouble (maybe not, if he was passed out on a bench! lol). Oh, and if you're such a playboy that probably means you've got at least a novia back in the US. Careful what you take back to her. Good luck to ya.

: Xman says: "Your only true friends in the zona are other friends from north of the border."

: No offense but if you feel that way, why go????
: I guess your are entitled to your own outlook and I don't know how often you visit TJ but if you view all Mexicans in ZN as out to screw you how can you possibly enjoy or justify going there? I think the attitude you are projecting when you travel probably influences how people view you and treat you.

: More than a couple of locals have really saved my ass when I was in trouble. Also, a few US citizens living down there are some of the most bad news people I know of.

: Your comments on being on guard when walking etc... are good ones. TJ is a dangerous city but so is New York or San Francisco.

: The author of the above story is a good guy and I am really bummed it happened to him. It is really scary shit. I'm also bummed though that some elderly Mexican laborers in Rancho Santa Fe got the shit beat out of them by Mt. Carmel High teens with nothing better to do and NOTHING to gain from it. ("True friends from the north")

: Bad people exist everywhere, so do good people.
