Phoenix, I wish you luck but as I expressed in RS, I am unhappy with the idea of moderation, three strikes rules and whatever else in the same vein. I just strongly believe that internet boards should be operated in the spirit of unfettered robust free speech. I would not want to see a poster censored or banned because he is provocative, controversial, obnoxious or offensive. We can handle it. This is one of those situations where the cure is worse than the disease.

Yes, there have to be rules based on the same limits that are placed on free speech in the U.S. Posts that have the potential to do tangible harm to another person should be censored or deleted - if the poster persists, he should be banned. I'm talking about posts that compromise anonymity or are libelous - those kind of rules are OK. But pure flames or flame "bait" - nah...it's just too subjective. And who knows how objective the moderator will be? If there is a perception that the moderator is not absolutely objective beyond reproach, you've got a doomed board. I don't think you or anybody else needs that kind of pressure. Again, this is what happened a couple of years ago at JRSSG when that degenerated into flame wars between censored posters and the moderator, and many posters and lurkers lost faith in the fairness of the moderation.

Good luck again. Just wanted to get in my viewpoint on this since so many of the posts seem to be in favor of restrictive registration and posting policies. I don't think that is the overall consensus of this community. When the issue came up on RS, the posts were mostly in favor of keeping it laissez-faire.
