| The key is, don't LOOK like a victim, and you PROBABLY won't become one. This worked for me during years of port calls in the Western Pacific, most of the time I went alone (pretty dumb in retrospect). Stand up straight, scan your surroundings, make eye contact with potential threats. I'm sure it's not a guarantee, but it can't hurt... IMHO.
