Just discovered that a friend of mine had a run-in with the creeps on that evil stretch of Primera between Constitution and Revolucion. He's not on this list but OKed me passing along a few facts in the hope it might give some folks here more useful info for avoiding such situations. This is by the way the first time someone I know has been hit in TJ, so it brings home for me in a big way what was something I knew about in the past, but always considered in a very abstract way.

He was coming back from the clubs early a.m. Sat. morning/Friday night, as he says, a little out of it after a very good session with a favorita, and then it happened: footsteps from behind only a second before having the chokehold applied, while a second guy approached from the front and attempted to get at pockets. My friend managed to throw the choker off balance, fell backward on top of him and wriggled free of the hold, got up and ran across street, then up to corner and across the border--once the initial hold situation was over, the muggers lost interest and did not attempt to pursue. The creeps failed to get his wallet, which was empty in any event, but he lost his glasses in the struggle (in other words, very good outcome, all things considered--he also wasn't hurt). There was always lots of speculation on Redsnake as to what kind of people were targeted by these muggers--e.g., many suggested older, frailer looking guys might be more likely victims. My friend however is young, mid-30s, and rather sturdy in build, so this seems to indicate that the little weasels will go after a wide range of people. My guess is that my buddy might have been significantly less aware of what was going on as a result of the hypnotic effect of the chica encounter, let his guard down a bit, and the muggers seem to have a radar for this.

So, play safe out there, guys! Travel in packs when possible; when it's not possible, keep alert at all times and STAY AWAY FROM THAT BLOCK STRETCH on Primera between Const. and Rev. at night if at all possible.
