I carry money in 7 different places. Each has its own purpose. In my right front pocket is my "cartera para policia" (wallet for the police). I haven't had to use it yet, but if I do I'm prepared based on what I've learned by reading these stories on the internet.

Everything I might need to show la polica is in one spot:
- for ID a zerox copy of my passport and driver's license
- a copy of my prescriptions for Viagra and Proscar
- a copy of my health insurance card
- and enough money for one fiesta ($40 + $10)

Since all my ID is zerox copies I'm not concerned about them "confiscating" it as leverage.
I have copies of prescriptions for the pills they might find.
From the stories I've read they seem to be particularly interested in how much money you have. In the wallet for them I have $50. "Todo" (All).

Whether I pay the mordida with "all the money I have" or politely ask to see the judge will depend on the circumstances at the time. It's a different country with different rules and they're going to do what they're going to do. I, however, have prepared my response to whatever they do ahead of time.
