I had a business meeting near the border that lasted until 1:30 pm. I decided to make a quick trip to TJ after the meeting. I parked my car at my regular lot, the east side of the border. I was originally thinking about walking to ZN for a quickie at AB or with SG. I only wanted to spend only a short time there (preferably less than one hour) before returning to work. As I was walking to the entrance of the bridge to Mexico, I saw a border-crossing bus just ready to leave at 2pm. A great timing. I hopped onto the bus. It had to be my day. I quickly realized that the bus was going to Caliente. hmmm... It would be a long walk to ZN. But, I reminded myself that I had an option of doing Sans Cousi/Bambi thing. I hadn't been at these clubs for a couple of months. They wouldn't be a bad choice for afternoon. I only had time to try one club. I went to Sans Cousi, where the selection was actually pretty good for 2:20 pm. I chose a (real) girl. But, that's not what this post is about. The girl took me to the hotel on a cross street with Revolucion. After a satisfactory session, she and I went down to the street, and then walked together for a whole block. This was around 3 pm. We didn't talk as we walked (I don't speak Spanish, she didn't speak English), but as we parted our ways at the corner of Revolucion, I said good bye to her. I needed to return to work, and waved to a cab. Just when I was walking to the cab, a guy who wore a Policia bullet-proof vest approached me. He said to me "prostitution, illegal in Mexico". I couldn't say anything. He repeated the same words. Then added the word "arresto". He then demanded my ID, which he took in his hand. Numerous thoughts ran across my mind. The first thing I thought about was to deny the charge. But, it was obvious he had been watching me for a while. He asked me whether I spoke Spanish, I said no. He then started talking to a cell phone. With broken English, he told me that I would have to meet his supervisor. The guy started walking on Revolucion with my California DL in his hand. I was seeking to bribe my way out of the situation, but the lack of Spanish really hurt. I tried the word "donacion". But, he didn't respond to the word. After two blocks, he found the supervisor who was questioning a Mexican guy on the street. Although I didn't doubt much from the beginning, these guys worked for the real police. The supervisor repeated the statement. "Prostitution is illegal in Mexico. Did you know that?" I said "no". Then the two guys started talking to each other in Spanish for more than one minute. I had no idea what was going on. Do they really want to arrest me? Finally, the supervisor asked me. "Do you want to pay a fine?". I said "yes". "How much do you have?" "I only have $40, but I need a money for a cab to the border." "Don't you have $50?" I then started to pull up my wallet so that I could count the money I had, but the supervisor stopped me immediately. "Don't show your money here". These words finally confirmed what I was suspecting from the beginning. This was an extortion scheme. "I only have $40." "Okay". The supervisor let the other guy escort me to the place where I could pick up a cab. When I tried to pay $40 (I had exactly $45 in my wallet) on the street, he stopped me and put me in the cab first. Only then, he took my money in exchange for my DL in a manner that others couldn't see us. Those fucking basterds. Obviously, $40 was a cheap lesson, and at least, the whole thing was happening under the bright sunlight. Nonetheless, all the mental hassles that I had to go through, like the thoughts of Mexican jail, was really too much. I will think twice before going back to those Revolucion clubs. If I ever go back, I would not leave a hotel with a chica.
