One thing to remember is that TJ has been trying to improve it image with tourists for several years now. This is one reason they may be trying to crack down on prostitution on Revolution. Another thing they do is to ensure that tourists that get arrested go to see the judge immediately. You will not have to go to jail and wait for any length of time to see the judge. The judge will most likely give a choice of paying a modest fine or spending X hour’s in jail. This system is specifically in place to keep gringos (tourists) from spending time in the TJ jail for the common petty crimes (fighting, pissing in public, prostitution, ect…) they are most often arrested for. So, Even if they do actually arrest you “in the name of cracking down on prostitution” your fine by the judge will most likely be less than the police will try to get you to pay on the street. And if the cop is just looking for some easy money he will let you go after you call his bluff. I do understand that paying a small fine on the street in order to avoid all of the hassle and to speed up the process can sometimes be the best thing to do. Whether to pay or not to pay is a personal judgment call that you must make based on the particular situation. If you are “robbed” by a cop try to get his name and go to the police station or the tourist assistance office and report it. |
