Krico,

I'll agree with you about the 'clean up' of La Zona. Things were much more dismal, and there were a lot fewer people as well. La Zona has improved in several ways.

Your noting the condition of the perros de calle is correct, as well as the infrequency of passed out drunks and junkies, but it's more then that. The sidewalks get cleaned up several times a day anywhere near a bar. The taco stand owners are much more aggressive about chasing off the undesirables of La Zona. And, there seem to be more street vendors as well. (but, that could be my imagination)

The other thing that I see far more than in past years is security and policia. Used to be the occasional cop car would crusise down the street, but seeing cops walking the streets was a rare sight. Now, there seems to be a 'cop' every 100' at all hours of the night. And, la guardia is in La Zona almost every weekend. Over the summer, I thought that this was an election related 'show of force', but it's gone on for several months. So, I'm not sure what the driving force is to keep up the presence. I also took note of the report that somehow the La Tropa clan is getting the cooperation of la policia in working to keep that 'dark and dead' block between La Zona and LT cleaned up. (hmmm….wonder if that block might become part of La Zona?)

I haven't been to CR, yet, so I can't comment on this destination. But, I do agree that TJ is slowly improving and getting cleaner.
