Mugged or suckered? My first time down (August 2000) I did not get money before crossing the border. Asked a taxi driver to take me to an ATM that would give me dollars. He acted like he did not know where to find one and asked the other drivers. When we got downtown to the ATM it was broken. There was another one across the street. When I went crossed there was a guy over there that said he would help me with the ATM. I told him no thanks. He told me that the ATM would only give me pesos and that the maximum in pesos I would get would be equal to $50 US. While I was getting the money the ATM displayed a 50 price. (This was the ATM surcharge not the amount of money I was getting.) I did not know this at the time, I thought I was only gettin $50 US. After I got the money my helpful guy offered to exchange my pesos for $50 US in the bar across the street. I would have done this but my taxi diver told me that my new friend was trying to rip me off. Latter on I found out that I had $300 US in pesos. My thought crossing the border that night was did the driver set me up when he talked to the other drivers before we went down town. What did I learn. Get your money on the US side and watch who you trust.
