The biggest danger in IRC is that it allows for a direct connection between your PC and someone elses PC.

The above problem came from a virus that was spread in a file using the DCC feature. Once it installed itself on a PC, it would try to send itself to every other person on IRC when they joined.

If you had DCC set up to automatically accept files, you were toast.

Make sure you 1) set your DCC options to ALWAYS ask if you want to accept a file from someone else, and 2) NEVER EVER accept a file unless you know what it is and who is sending it, and even then, be careful.

If you are really paranoid, NEVER accept a file via DCC. Have it emailed to you, and then scan it !!
