There is some evidence that "risk-taking" is an instinctual trait and not generally a conscious decision. There are people who not only continuously take risks but actively seek it out. I'm reminded of that everytime I see a guy on a motorcycle weaving in and out of traffic at 70-80 MPH on the freeway in the rain. There are also people who continuously and scrupulously avoid risks. They would never consider owning stocks - too risky. It's possible that we each have our assigned genetic "risk-profile". One way of viewing the stock market is that it's a way for different people with different risk profiles to assume, avoid, or hedge risk.
A very interesting book on risk as instinctual is "The Conative Connection" by Kathy Kolbe.
