...by a State Dept guy once that if I had a GOOD copy of my passport AND some form of valid photo ID I was in good shape. The problem with just the photocopy is it could be your picture glued onto someone else's passport. Something like a drivers lic or CA ID card should work. If I was really worried I'd carry my old (expired) CA drivers lic, or get a state ID card.
