I've been asked for additonal ID only once, at which point I pulled out my 'fishing license holder'. In it I have the CA ID, birth cert. copy (not with the embosed seal) and the front page of my passport. (the page with the picture)

The INS guy thanked me, and waived me through. This only has happened once, and it was coupled with beign asked about the contents of my 'party bag'. Hell, now, I don't even bother with holding up my ID when I say, "US".

A note: I am pretty much a 'white boy' so I don't expect any problems. YMMV.

This 'ID Packet' was suggested to me a long time ago by a friend who travels all over the world. In almost every country these documents will suffice as valid ID. And, if you feel that it's best not to be IDed as an American (i.e. you're hijacked while flying Air France out of Athens International) you can jetison the 'ID Packet' pretty easily. And, you won't really be loosing anything that's hard to replace, either.
