I was floored by the difference, with a goodly percentage of the people I talked to there speaking better English than I do Spanish. In the TJ Zona I can count on two hands the number of chicas that speak English that well. My results aren't scientific or anything, but the majority of people I met in Juarez were actually born and raised there and were taught English in school, and many had spent considerable time in the US. This obviously differs greatly from the TJ Zona population, 99% of whom come from anywhere BUT TJ. People have made some excellent points so far re: chicas' motivation to learn English. I haven't met many in the Zona who view prostitution as a long term career gig. It is simply a means to an end and the scenario always is that they will retire to the campo and live happily ever after. For the chicas that DO make investments in trying to attract business, however, note the awesome proliferation of stuff like boob jobs, butt implants, lipo, etc., I am pretty surprised they don't make more of an effort to learn at least SOME English. If I was giving career advice, I'd recommend 6 months of English lessons 1000 times before I'd recommend ASS IMPLANTS!!! Of course I'd recommend smiling at potential clientes too, so what the hell do I know... Of the chicas that I have known in TJ that spoke English, most learned it from an American boyfriend or from living for awhile in the US, not in Mexican schools as a foreign language. Then there's Tania who went to Berlitz for an intensive indoctrination!
