Exactly. We have this problem throughout Mexico, esp. Baja California. Officials are reluctant to give much attention to the issue because it is a tourist venue. Those statistics that have come out are laughable. I have been told by the statisticians in Mexico City they are way off base. According to the official stats, all of Baja has less HIV +s then San Diego county. There is also the problem with quality HIV testing in Mexico. Many false positives and negatives. Many doctors who don't like to touch people who are known to be HIV+. Knowledge too that even if one gets tested there are no support or medical services to use - esp. for women.

If given the appropriate funding later this spring, one of the facets of my project is to provide free anonymous testing accross the border to the women in the project. I already have clearance to do so. Of course, this wont be a statistical analysis, just a service they are entitled to.

There is very little in the way of funding outside of the Mexican government. You really have to be US based to get a good epidemiological profile going. There are researchers at COLEF with the skills (Colegio de la Frontera Norte), but they can't work for free.
