Its always disheartening to see an entire discipline slighted because of the few that make the publics attention. In fact, there are thousands of anthropologists that work for the government as well as non-profit agencies throughout the world -- doing admirable, practical, and useful work. They work in organizations as large as the World Health Organization to the smallest grassroots activist organizations. They don't get public attention, because well, helping to solve the worlds vast social injustices and inequity just isn't as sexy a topic as some famous researcher who's work can't stand up to today's standards. I urge you to re read my own intentions with this project. Also, keep in mind that I have been studying these issues for a number of years in a variety of settings. I've also taken out student loans to accomate those costs that my grantors weren't able to cover. Lastly, not to sound so self-defensive, but dissertation work is really just setting the foundation for a life-time of activities, advocacy, and research.
