"The answer that keeps coming up in my mind every time I ask myself this question is the plain and simple fact, money. It may not be the right answer but I am still waiting for one better." The popular, idealized notion of women is that they are essentially monogamous and have sex only with men they love. Society labels such women "good". Any woman who has sex for any other reason is "bad". We call them sluts, golddiggers, whores, ambitious, scheming, etc. By contrast, a theme that has run throughout literature since its beginning is that the "line" between good and evil, between sinner and saint, between the law-abiding citizen and the criminal, is invisible and based almost entirely on the situation. From Greek tragedy to modern times, authors like Aeschylus, Shakespeare, Dostoyesvsky, Hawthorne, and Vonnegut, have been fascinated with the idea that the ordinary person is capable of great courage and nobility, but also of great mischief and malice, depending on the situation they're placed in. I don't see prostitutes any differently. They are ordinary women caught up in extraordinary situations. When I was young, it was popular for men to say that "there's a little bit of the whore in every woman". After spending a lot of time in TJ, I have no doubt that this is true. Some situations just bring out more of it than others. (BTW, evolutionary biologists now offer a scientific basis for a woman's use of sex for non-traditional purposes, i.e., as a means of carrying out her evolutionary goals of getting the best man to raise her kids, getting the best male genes for her offspring, and getting the highest price for bestowing sexual favors. Sound familiar?) Just food for thought... BTW, dinner sounds great.
