I agree with your doctor. The Pepto has been proposed only for prophylaxis, not for therapy. Sort of like getting the flu shot six weeks before you are exposed vs. waiting until you've already gotten sick. get it? As far as the cimetidine theory, I haven't personally come across any such information in the past. There is also some faulty evidence to the "I think therefore I am" argument. IOW, a single person saying, "I took cimetidine, and I got the shits, so therefore the cimetidine is the reason I got the shits" is not a great scientific proof. Now if 100 people can say the same thing . . . At any rate, simply because I haven't heard about it doesn't mean it may not be true. Furthermore, the "explanation" put forth to explain the association at least shows some rationale. So, I guess what I'm saying is that I'll try to do a little bit of lit research and get back to you.
