Why not? You don't have any money left when you leave the bar anyway, right? The rateros know this - and this is another reason why it is safe to walk back. Walking in with your pockets loaded should be the unsafe period. However, when you do it before 9pm, and are not drunk, there are so many people on the street that it is completely safe. Look at the statistics posted here, on Redsnake, and ASPT over the last 5 years. You will find a ZERO incidence of a sober gringo getting mugged before 8pm. I'm not saying to drop your guard - but look at the statistics. Here is the two typical scenarios for getting mugged: 1) Drunk gringo blows too much on drinks for the girls, or gets lousy session from chick. About 11pm to 3am, he leaves bar/hotel to go to the ATM - so he can "score". Unaware of his surroundings - he is attacked from behind with a chokehold. Typical loss $20, and wallet/ID. 2) Drunk gringo is wandering around the alley area, or side street, from about 9pm - 3am. He has just bought a taco - thereby showing the bandits where he keeps his wallet. Unaware of his surroundings he is attacked from behind with a chokehold. Typical loss $80, plus wallet/ID. There have been a few odd exceptions to these scenarios - such as the case of the guy with a gun going to the room. Or the guy with the knife going to the room. But these are so rare that they could be chalked up to bullshit, or simple dumb luck.
