I was there on New Years eve, there were sobriety check points up in a number of locations, each time I drove through one I was a nervous wreck (and I was sitting in the back of a taxi!). Also saw lots of police cars rushing about, lights flashing..I don't think you could have picked a worse night to drive your car in Tj. If I was on foot and did nothing wrong I might have contested it..however in your situation, driving my own (nice) car, I probably would have done the same as you. I don't know what the forfeiture laws are down there but I wouldn't want to risk losing or having to leave my car. Next time just pay the extra dollars and take a taxi. I noticed one of the police vans I saw said Policia Especial, I wonder if they also have Policia Favoritos.
