It's amazing how different the police are in the zona as opposed to other areas of TJ. I truly believe that the police realize that Fox will gradually weed out the corrupt police and eventually increase the pay of policemen to prevent such corruption BUT...in the meantime...here is a true story...
Sunday morning (New Years Eve) my girlfriend decides to have me pick her up at CC so that she can sleep at my apt. I stop to see if she is in front, but she was late...so I decided to make another loop (hoping she would be there in a couple of minutes). As I make a right turn off of Constitution, the lights came on and I knew I was screwed.
I have a newer car, CA plates and My Spanish is lower-intermediate. After stopping, two policemen approached my car on each side. The policeman/ratero on my right hand side asked to see my ID and reg. then asked me to breath into has hands. No problem, I was totally sober. Afterwards, he asked me to come to cop car so he could write me out a ticket. He showed me some bogus ticket for $50...so I gave him the money. Meanwhile...ratero/policemen #2 is searching my car(doubt there is any Constitutional protections). As I proceed back to my car, ratero 2 has three bottles on my front seat. A big bottle of ibuprofen, some Echinacea and a small bottle I didn't recognize. I told him that the bottle wasn't mine and he proceeded to single out the bottle and pull out a bag of (what looked like) crystal or coke...by the way I am not a drug user except for alcohol. Like clockwork, they handcuffed me and were ready to take me in...they said that I couldn't prove it wasn't mine because it was my word against there's. They then proceeded to ask me how much money I had and started padding me down until they found my wallet in my front pocket...they took out $200, unhadcuffed me and told me to leave..so I did.
This may sound like a fraudulent story but believe me it's god's honest truth. I have always been a proponent of change for the better in Mexico but now my attitude about Mexico is jaded and paranoid. I realize that it's not too smart to drive a decent ride in the Zone but I live in TJ and it doesn't make sense for me to take a taxi to pick my chica up....
Anyways...I just thought you guys might want to know that you should take extra caution in the zone right now because police corruption is likely to continue for a while as long as they continue to hire uneducated thugs straight from Culiacan, Oaxaca or Michoacan.
It's hunting season..so wear camouflage
