Lincoln is very much admired in Mexico, as he is in the rest of the world. The statue honoring Honest Abe was a gift from the city of San Diego to Tijuana, many years ago. In exchange, Tijuana gave San Diego a statue of someone (who I don't remember), which is on display in a park in San Diego (which I don't remember where). If I'm not mistaken, the United States actually abolished slavery before Mexico did. My guess is Abe is so honored not because of reluctance to interfere in Mexico, but for his consciousness and understanding of the moral wrongness of slavery and general oppression of other races. That's an issue that could hit a powerful chord in a mestizo country.
