read your history. Abe decided to "abolish slavery" to keep England from recognizing the Confederacy at a critical juncture of the war - maybe even coming in on the side of the Confederacy. It was a calculated risk that almost backfired. Remember - he came very close to losing the election to McClellan in 1864. McClellan probably would have just let the Confederacy go. If Gettysburg would have gone the other way - that's probably just what would have happened.

If you think about it - Old Abe was a real butcher. On the surface, there is no way that war was worth so many lives. You've got to wonder what the world would have been like if the Confederacy would have been allowed to split uncontested(or at least McClellanized). Eventually they would have HAD to abolish slavery, but it wouldn't have been until the 20th century. Those Southern fuckers probably would have supported Germany in WWI and WWII. Who the hell knows - maybe we would STILL have slavery, and the Nazis would be running the show. If that were the case - then maybe those lives WERE worth it.
