I usually drive in, but I have walked around TJ quite a lot. There are essentially three reasonably straightforward ways to get from the intersection of Revo and 2nd to the zona. All take you past at least one bad area. All are unsafe after dark, unless you are in a group. When I was new to the zona, I once went fom HK to the ATM at that corner and back around midnight, while so drunk I could barely walk straight. Somehow I made it back OK, probably because I did not take the worst alternative of going down Revolucion to 1st. While I do not doubt the reports of daylight muggings, I still think that any of these routes are safe for a lone monger in the daytime, IF you are sober, not obviously infirm, walk in the street, and keep your eyes open and your head moving around. I have spotted several guys who were potential muggers, and they usually look away rather than make eye contact. If you are elderly, limping, or counting your money while walking, that is a different story.

One of my more amusing trips down the bad stretch of 1st was a couple of months ago around midnight ago with a drunk friend when we had both just been screwed over by our girlfriends. He is a pretty good sized guy, but not huge, and he was looking for a fight that would not land him in jail. I wasn't looking for one, but the idea didn't sound too bad, either. He walked while waving money in his hand yelling in both Spanish and English, "Hey, I have lots of money. Anybody think they can take it from me. Come on you mother@#%#$%s. Are you chicken or what?" and more along those lines. Maybe not the smartest thing to do, but nobody took him up on the invitation. He was smart enough to shut up and put the money away before we turned onto Constitucion and risked encountering the truely professional thieves known as the police.
