"and you are at the mercy of the mexican government which at anytime can take any item in your house or apartment that you do not have reciepts or papers for.
( i spent a lot of time and talked to 3 different lawyers in tj about that - they all said the same thing )"

I have had two houses in Mexico and have an apartment now. The first two houses I kept for 7 years up until it came time for my divorce. I never had a problem with the Mexican Government on any of them. In Mexico paper work is necessary on all appliances and items valued over 100 dollars. This is more a matter of warranty vs. value. The chances of you being picked out and harassed by the local police are very slim to none. I currently have an apartment in TJ. I have gone out of my way to make it very comfortable for me. I purchased all items in the place in Mexico as not to have to deal with importing any of the items. For items imported you will need all your papers and proof that you paid the import tax for the items if there were ever any problem. I know today about 50 American citizens living in Mexico and to this day none have had any problems. A few even have businesses in Mexico (one a not so legit business but one everyone in this group would love). They have all been in Mexico for a period of 7 ? 18 years to date. If you decided to live in Mexico as far as the waiting at the boarder goes, there is one option. There is one parking lot on the state side that charges $5.00 per night every night and $6 on the weekends from 6-6. Once you learn the taxi system it will cost you less than a dollar to make it to the Sentri lane at the boarder.
It really is not that bad living in TJ. I can say it a little easier than most because I also have a place on this side of the boarder but I know other who do not and make the run across on a daily basis. I am down 4 ? 6 days a week right now and it really has not been a problem.
